Resin Rose and Fairy Tales 2020! August 14th-16th

Sep 10, 2019

    1. Yeah, we have nearly a year to plan, but the project is big so let's get started...

First, I want to stress that the theme is for all fairy tales and folklore. Any country of origin is welcome and diversity is encouraged. Has no one ever heard of your favorite story? Run with it!!! I, for one, am excited to learn lore I have never heard of.

So, I have to ask, what are your favorite bits of folk lore? If I had to pick favorites for myself it would be The Crane Wife (or the Daughter variant, I'm easy). Snow Queen and Little Sea Maid are right up there, too. Will you bring your dolls in costume? Will any of you come in costume? Please, share!

    2. Dolls will definitely be in costume. Maybe me too. I am a fan of Grimmโ€™s and Irish folklore, but itโ€™s all good. How I wish I had one of the dwarf BJDs to dress up for this event.

    3. Wow, Volk's SDC dolls Hansel and Gretel are perfect for this con if anybody brings them lol. Also it's in time for their disney collaboration in winter.

Currently it's too far away for me to know if I can make it or not but I'm excited to see the vendors that are gonna be there for 2020.

I think one of the most memorable fairy tale I read as a kid was The Happy Prince and The Red Shoes. It's a really interesting theme tho with so many ways to dress up the dolls.

    4. Anything with Raven is a plus, or just tricksters in general. I love Egyptian folklore, and Native American as well, but I think the stories that stick with me the most are the Haida ones about the trickster Mouse Woman. I love the way she's written in the tales of her, and the way she solves problems that the other narnuaks cause for the normal humans.

I recommend them to anyone who loves folklore of all kinds.

    5. I love myths from all over, but I like the Snow Queen story. So many myths involve girl being dependent on boy, and I love how the Snow Queen story is about a girl learning to stand on her own feet.

One thing is certain though, I am not going to make another outfit that requires making a crinoline cage! Must make different things not the same things!

    6. Iโ€™m honestly hoping that Iโ€™ll be able to work a selkie into whatever contest I decide to enter, I havenโ€™t been to the expo for a few years but when I last attended I had so much fun with my diorama contest entry, I know Iโ€™m gonna be competing again in some way! I also just love seeing the work that everybody puts into their entires and this time is should be pretty educational with how much folklore there is in the world!

    7. @SwivelChair !!! I love selkies! If I finish my swan prince arm in time, a selkie pelt is on my hope-to-do list.

    8. What a great theme! I can't wait to see what everyone will do for it. There are a number of things I could name (I'm right there with y'all re: selkies!!) but I would have to go with my childhood favorite fairy tale, The Twelve Dancing Princesses. When I was six or seven I even wrote my first little book that was an, er, extremely creative re-imagining of it.

    9. Registration is now open for preregistration and vendors :)

Our Coloring Book Contest has now started too.
See our website for all the rules 2020 Coloring Book Contest

    10. @onedayrobots I love Twelve Dancing Princesses! I pondered how costuming for it could be done. Make satin slippers and sand the poop out of the soles? Would that be obvious enough? I considered that one before I decided on a Wild Swans costume for one of my boys. (Side note: I hate sculpting feathers. I will do it, but I will not enjoy it.)

    11. I bought my ticket already. The doll I plan on bringing I just ordered this week as well. I hope to be finished with my Princess ball gown by then and I will need to make a gown for my new girl as well.

    12. I know what you mean. It's almost a year away and I still stress about getting all my projects done.

    13. I wasn't able to make it this year, but hearing next year's theme makes me even more excited for 2020! Especially since I love fairy tales. I'll probably wear something fairy tale princess-inspired but I hope to coordinate a doll outfit (or an entire doll?!) based on Japanese folklore. I'm thinking yuki onna, which means 'snow woman.' It's basically a type of ghost whom appears in snow storms. Sometimes they lure people to their deaths, but it depends on the account!

    14. I love fairytales and the imaginary. I think my favorite thing ever is the show "Once Upon a Time." I'm so thankful that they made that show. It's hard to pick just one fairytale but I think it would have to be Snow White for me.

    15. In addition to early vendor sign-ups we had early panelist volunteers, too! I have room for more, but here is what we have confirmed so far.

Saturday Clackamas: "Iron BJD" 2:15-5pm, Game (Bre)
Saturday Columbia "Faceup w/ AdrenalineAddiction" 3:15-5pm, Lecture (Adelle)
Saturday Columbia "Dolly Dating" 1pm-2:45, Game (Kaiger)

Sunday Clackamas: "Sandle Making" 1pm-3:45, make-n-take with ??fee (Angel)

    16. One of my favorite books as a kid was a DK book called "The Illustrated Book of Fairytales," retold by Neil Philip and illustrated by Nilesh Mistry. It's a really diverse collection of familiar (Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, etc) and foreign (A Whale's Soul and it's Burning Heart, Three Magic Oranges, Mushkil Gusha...), all wreathed in gorgeous illustrations. I don't want to say which are my favorites in case I use one for a contest (there are a few stories in here which I've never come across in any other collection), but I'd highly recommend the whole book for anyone who loves folklore.

    17. Speaking of obscure or foreign folktales... Would it be acceptable to display a (reasonably sized) picture, text print-out, open book, etc next to contest entries so that viewers can learn more about whatever stories they're from? As long as it weren't infringing on other people's entry space or trying to cheat on the backdrop rule, I think that would be fun and educational.

    20. oh man i'll have to think of a few folk tales to match my dolls! my doll kirsikka elke is finnish & i absolutely ADORE the Kalevala, the national finnish epic story, but i'll have to think of a character from that she can dress up as.

    25. Still wondering if stories and characters usually classified under "mythology" (Greek, Egyptian, Norse, etc) count ?

    26. @Kittzel I'd say those totally count! Mythology is a type of folk lore right?

I cant wait for this show! I know it's still 7 months away, but I'm so looking forward to visiting Portland again! I'm not sure which tales I love best, but I love everything mystic and fantasy!

    27. The hotel has informed us that there is only 5 more double queen rooms available. They will not be able to add more. If you need a double queen room, we suggest booking it now. They still have King rooms available.

    28. I am planning to go! I have just placed an order for a fantasy doll from Fairland! It will be my first time there :)

    29. Wow, very interesting them) I think it will be very exciting)

    30. My favorite lesser known fairy tales are:
      "The Sprightly Tailor", about a tailor who is challenged to work in a haunted cathedral, and just keeps coolly working on the pants he's sewing in spite of a monster slowly rising out of the floor;
      and,
"Vasilissa the Beautiful", about a magic doll who will come to life and help you with your problems if you take it into a quiet corner and give it some food and water :3nodding:
