So I have a question and just want to make sure before I try to modify some eyes... So, I have excitedly seen some gorgeous resin eyes lately! I even found a style that I wanted and am trying to determine if what I want to do is considered bad form, rude, or if I'm overthinking it. What I want is a low-dome set of black sclera grey iris eyes, because the doll wearing them has semi-nareow eyes, so the high dome doesn't sit flush in the head (a Doll Chateau Dolores). But finding low-dome eyes with the black sclera is either impossible or I'm looking in the wrong places. So to my questions because I have found a pair of eyes that I do love but the domes are huge, but they're resin and handmade. So would it be rude to ask the artist if low-dome would be an option? Or would it make more sense to get them as-is and modify them manually via respirator and drill and sandpaper? (High chance I'm overthinking it, but in the past, when I modified items I bought for myself and the person who made it found out, they were catty about it and have made me paranoid about it. I'm autistic and can't always tell if I'm overstepping some unspoken barrier...) (Slight edit: if someone knows where I can get the eyes without modifications, please shove me in that direction!)
Personally, I don't see why that kind of mod would be a problem since you aren't altering aesthetic. Some eye makers even offer options for different shape. What you are asking can be very simply done by pouring less resin. If I was asked to do that for made-to-order, I would have no problem. For in-stock eyes, sanding should do but I think it's very tricky since resin is hard and eyes are small and in difficult shape to have a good grip.
Once You pay for something legitimately, it's yours to do with as you please (I am solely speaking of objects and not living beings). Even if it is a historical art piece and you want to burn it in fire, for a short video, that would be your choice to make. There will always be people who are offended, even just because a stranger eats things the other doesn't eat. As long as you are not physically harming other living beings, you are not doing anything wrong. It's also not rude to ask if an eye maker, can accommodate a request. That's how custom made items are usually made. There was a lady who used to sell custom made eyes for dolls, but didn't offer low dome, half sphere, low profile eyes, so I asked (politely) if she could make some for me. She ended up making more than ten different custom eyes for me. Don't be afraid to ask politely first, if they would be willing to make a particular eye shape for you. However, if they can't or don't want to. It is perfectly fine for you to modify the eyes, if you choose to purchase them. Hopefully that's helpful or at least reassuring. Congrats on your Dolores, I always admired him from afar (I gave up purchasing more giant resin dolls a long time ago). (:
Ashuradark is my go-to for no-dome eyes; custom orders are possible with both listed colors and custom colors, and they're on the affordable end for custom eyes. As for asking: I'd say that so long as you're not demanding, that there's nothing wrong with asking about low or no dome options! You can explain which eyes you love and that they wouldn't fit your doll, and ask if they can make them with a smaller dome. For modifying: Once you've bought something, it's yours to do with as you please. No one has any right to be unhappy about that unless you've custom ordered it and told them it was exactly how you wanted it, but you lied - and then they only have the right to be unhappy about being lied to. Yes, handmade eyes are often works of art. They're still yours to do with as you please once you buy them, and this is a hobby known for its customizations. Just make sure you either have a new sealant ready to layer over the top or you polish them to a shine, so you don't have any scratches left!
Thank you!!! That actually really helps, I'm definitely a socially awkward person and am always worried that I'm overstepping some social norm. And yeah, I largely viewed it that way (it was a dress that I removed unnecessary ribbon on, and I had owned the dress for a while when the person expressed (indirectly, through another doll friend) that I shouldn't have done that) I think I will discuss with the eyemaker to see if they can do that (i like the look on some dolls, but not on all of them, and definitely not on this one). I love my Dolores, I actually got the male dolores to make a tall, rail-thin female doll (didn't really want hips, no bust to speak of), and I absolutely love the sculpt and body. They're my tallest, and I love the fingers and toes! Thank you! Yeah I am quite nervous about trying to mod them (especially since I'd have to buy two pairs and that's already costly) but I'm glad to know my fears about the polite request being seen as rude are unfounded. Huzzah! Now this is the third time I've seen this mentioned. I was in the hobby pretty well until a number of years ago when health and family drama pulled me away, so I'm not familiar, but what the hickety heck is a no dome eye? (And is Ashuradark on Etsy or the marketplace or...?)
No dome means the iris's dome doesn't go higher than the sclera (the part that's usually white). Low dome still has a little bit of roundness to it, but no dome is just the base eye shape. It's what I've got for my SOOM boys, and what most Telesthesia SDs need (according to my experience and other owner feedback). I really hate when the eye doesn't sit flush in the socket, so it's what I default to requesting when I order custom. Downside for dolls that can take a higher dome is that it doesn't reflect light quite as realistically, since natural eyes have an iris dome. Ashuradark is on Instagram with precisely that username, but her seller Instagram and Ko-fi accounts are ashuradarkeyes. She used to be on Etsy, but the fees got too expensive and she didn't want to have to raise her prices.
Ohhhhhh okay, that makes sense, I've seen a couple of the no-dome ones bust just assumed it would be a very low dome. I'll definitely go and give them a lookeyloo!
RingoAme (IG/etsy) and Secret Art Studio can also do custom eyes w/black sclera and very low dome. (I believe RingoAme's commissions are temporarily closed right now to prepare for Resin Rose, but her eyes are very good quality and worth waiting for IMO!)
Oooooooh so many options! Clearly I need to brush up on my Etsy search skills, but this really helps!!!
Etsy's search is really garbage anymore, so it's no wonder if you didn't see anything! (also, artists make more money selling off platform than from selling via Etsy, so I try to comm them over IG or their personal websites when possible. I've commissioned both RingoAme and Secret Art Studio and both of them make very nice eyes!)
I just wanted to chime in to give my vote to Ashuradark as well, since you've already gotten answers to your original question. You can find her shop here or you can contact her on instagram. She's a lovely person and her eyes are very high quality. I just received my custom commissions from her a few days ago, and I had a few very specific requests that she managed to handle without any issues.
She has been amazing, I explained my vision (one deep blue indigo glittery eye, with one grey-silver glittery eye and a slightly smaller iris) and she's already working on them, and I'm not going to lie, I'm also eying another pair in stock on her shop to make the shipping worth it, and I'm already planning at least three more pairs because they're so nice and reassuring and making sure I can get exactly what I want instead of just getting a pair that are "close enough" (which has been what I've gotten before, just "close enough"). I can't thank you guys enough for the suggestion, I'm so excited!!
