Maintenance resealing Volks default faceups

Feb 24, 2013

    1. A word of caution to those with Creamy Mami.. Handle her with outmost care if you wish not to damage her face up. Despite being REALLY Carefull (as I am with all my dolls) and only having her out on 3 very short occassions (before noticing the damage) the face-up has started to rub off :(
I keep her packed with the plastic face protector and foam strips just like she came when put away, and as I said is always careful when handling my dolls yet I somehow must have done something wrong...

I know Volks more recent face-ups have been sensitive (had the same problem with Ran and Lieselotte for example) but having only had Mami for 4 days before there was damage in the face-up and it really irks me.

      Just a heads up.

I was quite lucky, since the damage is mostly on the forehead with a small spot on one of the cheeks so it won't be too noticeable. I'm really beating myself up since I knew of this problem yet didn't do additional sealing when I got her home... I guess part of me wanted to believe Volks had fixed the problem...
(I wrote a quick email to Volks yesterday about this and made sure to mention the knee chipping because of the S-hook as well.. Don't really have high hopes of getting a satisfying reply.)

    2. Ouch! :shudder I feel sorry about your Mami. Thank you for the warning. I do not know how to do additional sealing, if I dare, and I would worry about damaging her. Please share with us when Volks reply.

    3. Ahiru: The same thing has happened to me! It's just under her chin for my Mami- and I never touch my dolls chins 0_o. It must have rubbed on her wig/the couch/her neckpiece/something... and *sigh* But yes! Everyone please be careful of her!

    4. Is there a tutorial anywhere or any instructions currently available on how to do additional sealing? I definitely want to protect my Yu and Mami before anything like this happens... :(

    5. When I do additional sealing I just take out the eyes and eyelashes (after I did so I remember another member saying that you can just masking tape them, so I'll be doing so when the other girsl arrive XD) and seal them just like you would when doing a face up. I've used MSC and seen no adverse reactions with the original sealer used (I've heard that some selaers can react bad with each other, so I was a bit scared the first time!). I spray around 20cm away like it says on the can. Then of course you have to re gloss parts and stuff.. and put in eyelashes if you removed them.

I need to fix her eyelashes now because I was stupid enough to yank them out. And of course I have no idea where the heck my glue is in all the boxes from the move :doh
This just keep getting better and better...:|

I'm sad Volks haven't fixed this problem..! I love Volks, but I think I shouldn't have to feel like I have to "fix" the doll right out of the box...
(And now that I think of it Victorique and Kujo probably haven't been additionally sealed, because I don't remember doing so... Maybe something to look at today..)

    6. I was the one who advised you to properly reseal the face ups when the dolls arrive home. ^^;; Not just recent Volks face ups, but the old ones, too. Because my older Reisner had the same problem and a little of his eyebrows got scratched off just by bumping his head softly against DarkRu's Williams (ehem...). And the Williams got scratched, too, but on the cheek... >.>

After that incident, whenever I receive a Volks doll with default face up, I quickly took off the eyes, and then cover the eyelashes with Scotch magic tape. Seal them on both sides (upper and lower), and then spray the whole face up with MSC. You can also seal the lips (because they have gloss on) with magic tape. The magic tape won't hurt the face up nor the gloss, and you can take them off easily. >.>

To re-seal the face up, just spray the MSC lightly on the face, with a circling motion, just like spraying perfume. ^^ Wait until it's dry before you spray another layer. Do it until you have several layers of MSC... 3-4 times in my case. ^^ After that, your Volks doll's face up will be safe. My advice is to do this right after you take the doll out of the box! D: The sooner the better... (_ _) I do it even before I try on the default outfits etc...

    7. Volks have never used enough sealant! Drives me mad! I dunno if it's because of the original "you're supposed to wipe it & customize it anyway" thing, or if they're just stingy with sealant. My Tony and Yukinojo got shiny-faced within months of them being home, and that was back in '06-07. Same thing, always started on chin & cheeks. They used a thin enough sealant-layer that I suspect it's the facebubble/ protective foam strips doing the damage (which totally defeats the purpose of a face protector!).

    8. I had the redo the faceup of my Shinn first edition... poor little tyke had scratches so much there was no way to repair it ;.;

    9. Thanks so much for the instructions on how to reseal, guys. I had no idea that this was such a bad problem. I ordered some removable tape so hopefully I'll be able to get everyone sprayed before any serious damage pops up. (._.)
