Hello everyone. I've recently returned to the hobby and I have just finished giving my two boys a dust up, although they stayed pretty clean in storage. I have noticed a small chip on my DoT Home Ducan's foot. Does anyone have any advice about repairing it or should I leave it alone? Thanks!
I've seen people mention in the past that you might actually be able to undo dents at least a bit by boiling the resin in water. Since it's been mentioned before there are probably a few threads or posts about it here and there... Boiling water softens the resin which is why it's able to do that. Otherwise I suppose it would be time to go into additive modding territory and fill the dent very carefully. There are ways people can add colour to the additive instead of just leaving it white, so that no blushing would be necessary. You'll have to do some sanding though to smooth it out and blend it with the rest of the foot (be sure to follow the guidelines in the stickied respiratory protection thread!).
Thanks so much for the advice. I'm a bit scared to boil his foot as you can't really find replacement DoT feet anymore but I might try to fill it. I have sanded seams before and wore the appropriate PPE ♥️
I've found setting up a double boiler to be less stressful than putting the resin part directly into the boiling water. In my case I used a pyrex bowl set into/ on top of the pot. It's slower, but you have more control over the temperature. Heating up resin can't hurt it unless you forget it on the stove and burn it after boiling off all the water. Plastics have a kind of memory to what they used to be. If it's a dent it should un-dent. If there is resin missing nothing will happen.
Oh, like a bain-marie? That's so much easier and less scary, thanks for the tip. How long would that usually take? I'm pretty sure it's a dent but this was experiment will tell!
It's also small enough that you might just be able to steam it out. I removed a dent from one of mine by putting the kettle on and holding it over the steam that came out.
Here's a link to the post I made about fixing a doll's head that I dropped mid-faceup: link I ended up using both the boil method and epoxy filling the remaining lost areas. The videos I got the idea from are from two different people who post things on Youtube their channel names are; Asenva and Lomi's Playground. Good luck with your repairs!
Oh wow, this post is exactly what I needed! The safety info is great, too. My DoA search-fu is obviously lacking. Thank you so much, you did an amazing job your repair! I will try to document my process and I will post it if successful.
Yes like a bain-maire. It's been a decade or so since I did mine, but between five and fifteen minutes depending on the part. I stood over it the whole time and don't have a good sense of time passing. My roommate at the time had a husky who opened two doors, got the lid off of a storage bin, took the doll I had in pieces in that bin, and hid the doll parts in a couch on the other side of the house. The teeth marks were incidental, not chewing, but there were a lot of little ones.
I think this dent might also be from a nibble from my friend's cat! Good to know that if it is, this method should work. Thank you!
