20–39cm Dolls Red demon princess (Alien Research Institute red oni sculpt)

Jun 3, 2023

    1. Some of you might remember my boxopening from several months ago where I showed the two oni heads I had bought from Mercari Japan, made by a Taobao artist whose name translates to Alien Research Institute according to the Mercari secondhand store I bought them from. Now a little while ago they suddenly had a few more in stock, including this girl who came with an actual matching body from the same artist. Now I've been wanting a red devil girl for ages and I love this head sculpt, so I got her. She arrived last week. Boxopening was done in the evening so excuse the poor picture quality, I had to use flash at some point to be able to show the details.

Obligatory box pic. Big box too, there was a wig and some off topic pet dolls in there too.

Hmm. No doll box, that was disappointing, and her head came separately?

Turned out the headbox just held her horns and the keychain that ARI dolls come with, the whole doll was in this burrito.

At least all the pointy bits were protected.

And there she is! Thanks to those massive feet she can stand on my duvet covered mattress and not fall. As was remarked by the seller, she is covered in sanding marks that show up quite badly under flash. They're a little less noticeable in daylight, but I will need to find a way to fix them anyway. Her color is "tungsten red" according to the listing and she stands about 34cm I guess?

She's got some junk in the trunk O.o And I love those legs. She can't bend them more than like 45 degrees at the knee though, so she can't really sit unfortunately, except with her legs sticking out in front of her.

      Big peets.

Her hands are beautiful with impressively sculpted long nails.

Her color in normal light. I actually had a harder time getting her to stand on my dresser (wood with a thin cloth overtop) than on my bed, I guess the cloth was slippery. Also she has a tendency to buckle at the hips.

And a closeup with some eyes. Her faceup is sadly damaged as is more often the case with dolls from this particular secondhand store, so I'll have to wipe it at some point, but I love her so much.

      Thanks for watching!

    2. That red color :D
She's such a unique sculpt, especially those legs. Is she much heavier compared to a regular 30cm BJD? I wonder if the legs add a lot of extra weight.
What causes the sanding on the legs to be that noticeable under flash? Are the sanded parts coarse to the touch (in which case using higher grit sandpaper could maybe make it less noticeable) or are they as smooth as everything else?

    3. The sanding parts could probably be covered with some blushing if higher grit sandpaper doesn't fix things.
The doll is interesting though, I'm sure with some tlc she'll be awesome.

    4. Whoa! What a distinctive girl!
Yeah I popped in to say that if the sanding marks can't be worked away, I highly recommend Pan Pastels for high-pigment pastel blushing that can hide most resin problems. All you have to be able to do is color-match the right tones. Or have an artist do it for you, you know, whatever works best for you.

    5. Wow, very cool!! I also dream of having a red demon doll someday :D She's both cute and creepy!

For the sanded areas, I recommend Novus plastic polish. There is a set of Novus 1, 2, and 3 which comes with some cloth and directions. I used it on a tan neck I modded shorter and was amazed at how well it blended the sanded areas with the unsanded resin! It does make the resin more glossy as you proceed (following the directions), but you could either stop early before it gets too shiny, or use sealant to make everything matte.
