Contest Reconstructed Photo Mosaic ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Jul 31, 2013

    1. PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST: PIECE BY PIECE

      Description
There are many components that go into our beloved dolls, each string, eye, wig, hand, etc… all work together to make the beauty that is a ball-jointed doll. When you take your doll apart, it is no less a piece of artwork than it is all put together.

"Deconstruct" your doll by photographing your doll's individual parts in isolation. Print out your best nine (9) photos and "Reconstruct" your doll by assembling a mosaic of these photos. Each individual photo can contain as many or as few components of your doll as you’d like. These 9 photos must be arranged together to produce the essence of a completed, assembled doll. They must be printed and arranged by hand, not by photoshop. Photograph or scan your completed mosaic. The only rule for how to assemble them is that each photo must touch another photo, there are no limits for overlapping and there are no mosaic-shape requirements. How you arrange your photos is key, so impress us!

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries: Sunday, August 18, 12:00am EDT (midnight)

If you're unsure of your local time, please check this COUNTDOWN CLOCK.

      Voting period: August 22-28

      Winner announced: Sunday, September 1st

      Rules

Entries will be not be included in the voting if they do not meet the submission guidelines: Photos must be in the correct format and size. There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, or watermark. When voting is open, your image will be shown anonymously.

You may NOT post or share the image in any way on any forum before the votes are tallied. Discovery of cross-posting will result in disqualifying your entry from the contest.

This contest is open to all members who are in good standing who joined on or before June 30th, 2013. Staff members may enter for fun, but will not compete for the prize.

      How to Enter

      • Each member may submit ONE photo mosaic. All photos must be sized to a maximum of 600x800 pixels (orientation is not important), in .JPG format.
      • NO PHOTOSHOP/DIGITAL ENHANCEMENT FIXUPS. This is a test of your camera-clout, not of how well you can edit a photo to unrecognizable levels. All photos must be created for this contest specifically.
      • Submissions should include the doll company and sculpt name, the camera you have used, and a short description of your inspiration (maximum 50 words).

    2. Hello! I've got a couple of questions about this one:

      1) When we put together our photo mosaic, do the pictures that we use have to be in their original size (i.e. if we print them as a 3x5, they need to appear in the mosaic as a 3x5) or can we cut them down to different ratios if necessary?
      2) When you say no photoshop, does that mean no simple fixes either (exposure adjustments, fixing white balance, etc.)

      Thanks!

    3. Is it possible to use more than one doll, like photographing one doll's head and another doll's torso?
Can the prints be trimmed to different shapes?
Can we actually take the doll apart and photograph different pieces or must the doll stay strung?

    4. I have a quick question. In the Triathlon it says:
Is that true for the other contests (like this one) as well?

    5. I would like to know this as well. This sounds like a fun challenge!

Thought of another question: would the pictures need to be SFW, or is doll nudity ok?

    6. For the 9 photos that we use, can we cut them up into smaller pieces to be used? Let's say I cut one photo into 4 smaller pieces and I used all pieces in the mosaic, will this count as one or four photos? Do I have to use all four pieces?

    7. 1) You can change the ratio/size. If you cut the photos down, they cannot be cut down to the outline of the doll part in the photo; background area must be included.
      2. Exposure adjustments and white balance adjustments are ok, although we do feel those are things you should know how to adjust in-camera. However, no advanced post-shooting effects, filters, FX, etc, are allowed.

      1. Yes, you can create your mosaic doll by using parts from different dolls.
      2. See above. The prints can be trimmed to different shapes if desired, but in all photos some background must be evident, and the trimming must still allow the photo to touch or overlap with other photos.
      3. Yes, you can unstring your doll to take photos, or "block off" the part being photographed if you keep it strung. Your choice.

That only applies to the Triathlon.

Doll nudity is ok, but we are deciding at this point whether the post will then have a NSFW header put on it or be posted as a link for people to check.

You may cut the photo up, but the pieces will still be counted as 1 original photo, since that's what you initially printed out. If you choose to go this route, you should also submit an extra photo, showing us the original uncut photo so we can check that you used all parts of it.

    8. Do we post the image here when it's done or pm it to someone?

    9. Thank you for the clarification!

    10. Raven, look up at the first post in this thread. Near the bottom, under Entry Form, there's a clickable link that says (in fact) "CLICK HERE". A form tab or window will open up for you to put the url where you're hosting your photo, and some other information. Everything gets submitted via that form.

    11. Ah.. okay. I didnt see that. lol. thanks :D

    12. Good to know, thank you! :) I'd have entered this one anyway. . . so many dumb ideas rattling around in my head I have to try them out.

    13. In terms of exposure and white balance, I was thinking more in terms of compensating for a printer that prints darker or a little more yellow than you see on your screen (I always seem to have that problem) we would be able to adjust the pictures a bit and reprint them out. But I understand! No major photoshoping! Thank you for clarifying!!

    14. I have a question about this. Do all of the photos have to be the same size? Or could some be bigger than others?

    15. ^^ feel free to vary the sizes and ratios of your photos. Some can be biggeer, some can be smaller, its up to your design!

    16. I have two questions:

      1. Since we can use more than one doll, does it have to be the individual pieces of separate dolls, ie. "one dolls head on another dolls torso" or could it be multiple dolls layered into a single piece, like "this side of the face is from one doll but that side of the face is from another"?

      2. Do the photos we use for the collage have to be photos we took specifically for the collage, or can some of the photos be older photos?

    17. You can break up your nine photos however you choose, so if you want to allocate two photos to illustrating the head, that's fine.

All photos MUST be new and taken for this contest!

    18. I have a question about this -
Does posting the image to my Flickr account count as not anonymous? I don't have much of a Flickr contact list and I don't have to tag the photo but I'm not sure how else to get an image url

    19. Sorry Tide, I'm unfamiliar with flickr, but is there an option where you can upload a private photo and just share the url with us? I know I can do this on photobucket. We're working on getting you a clearer answer.

    20. When you upload your photo to Flickr, mark it as "friends and family only" or "private". Provided that you don't have a bunch of strangers marked as "friends/family", you should be able to send just the link to us without problems :)

    21. You can also upload photos to imgur and set your gallery to private. I have an imgur gallery and have it set to where no one else can view my photos. Then you just click the photo and highlight the url and copy/paste it. Just dont put them in a album or if you do, set the album to private. There is an option to make all photos [whether in an album or not] private or public also. You dont have to upload them into an album and this way if you have your account set to private, no one will see them or even know they exist.

    22. Thank you all - I never knew that was even possible with Flickr. (Somehow I had thought that setting a photo private meant that Inoone would be able to see the photo even with a direct link)

    23. Unfortunately, that's not the case! If set to private, your photo won't be indexed by search engines, won't be visible on your photostream and won't be searchable through Flickr's internal search engine. However, if you provide a direct link, it can be seen by anyone.

Edit: And, by direct link, I mean the actual .jpg file, not the Flick page hosting the photo (that will not be visible to others).

    24. Get those brushes and pencils moving! A helpful countdown clock has been added to the first post!

    25. Hello,

For in camera processing, how much is allowed? For example, setting the wrong white balance on purpose.

    26. ^u^ I imagine that any kind of in-camera processing [white balance, exposure, etc...] would be fine to tinker with. Our main concern is post-processing to the point where the original photo is unrecognizable or hugely changed ^^. Avoid filters that might be part of the camera software. Be sure to include in your description the reason why you decided to set your white balance off, etc...

    27. I was kinda wondering about this too... like if we wanted to take black and white photos with our camera... is it okay to purposely set it to black and white instead of color? I'm going to be using my camera phone and the photos will be black and white when printed [because I dont have any colored ink atm] so I wanted to take black and white pics with my phone instead of color.

    28. ^^ This sounds fine, Raven.

    29. Thank you :D I'm hoping to print my pics tomorrow after I take them tonight so I wanted to make sure it was okay before I took any :]

    30. I had another question... when it says

"Each member may submit ONE photo mosaic. All photos must be sized to a maximum of 600x800 pixels (orientation is not important), in .JPG format"

does this mean when printed out before putting together... or is this the size the mosaic should be AFTER we've taken the 9 photos and assembled them? I'm kinda confused on that. lol

    31. This should be the size of the photo you take of your finished mosaic. You may also scan it if you prefer.

    32. That's what I thought :D Thank you ^^

    33. Is the countdown clock correct? It is showing me a deadline over a day away, but midnight Sunday EDT is actually tonight (about 11 hours away). Which is it?

    34. The clock looks correct to me. The contest ends tomorrow night at midnight eastern daylight time. Is the daylight savings part throwing you off?

    35. No, midnight Sunday doesn't match up with the countdown. Midnight Sunday is tonight, one minute after 11:59 pm Saturday. The countdown shows an extra 24 hours, which is actually midnight Monday EDT.

I am trying to figure out when the deadline actually is, so I know if I have time to enter. It's the deadline tonight? Is the deadline 24 hours from tonight? It makes a difference.

    36. The deadline is tomorrow night. I believe the clock was set to 11:55pm on Sunday night specifically to avoid the "midnight" confusion. Of course midnight on Sunday is technically the first thing that happens right after Saturday night, but that's rarely how anyone refers to it in conversation. :)

    37. My experience has been the opposite. I have never heard of midnight being referred to as you have. I am glad the countdown was posted, otherwise I would have given up the chance to enter since I can't be ready by tonight.

Thank you for answering my question.

    38. Hello, another question. Are we allowed to add anything to the scan? If we arrange the pictures on the scanner, I mean. I don't want to give away my idea, but something other than the pictures, like tape?

    39. You may not add anything else to your scan. This should be about the photos only.

    40. can we tape our pics together or do we have to lay them on top of one another and then take a pic?

    41. You can tape them together from the back or stick them down to a plain background paper. :)

    42. Thank you :D

      EDIT:

Submitted mine.... hopefully I did everything right. This is the first contest I've ever entered on here so.. lol. I hope I have a chance at least XD That prize is awesome :D

    43. Any color of paper, as long as it's a solid color? Or just white?

    44. Any color is fine. It could be your tabletop or wall or whatever provides a solid colored background. :)

    45. This contest is closing tonight, everyone! Please make sure you have time to input your entries, as last minute fiddling can often cost you!

    46. Will people see the little written bit about the inspiration when the entries are posted?

    47. ^u^ Yes, that will be posted along with each entry.

    48. Okay, cool. Thanks for answering. I can't wait to see everyone's entries! I just posted my own! Good luck to everyone!

    49. Was the 50 words maximum for the entire submission text or just the inspiration part? Just in case, I made my entire submission in 50 words exactly, including the inspiration but maybe this might help someone else.

    50. The 50 word limit applies to the inspirational design aspect. :)

    51. Thank you for your speedy reply! There is no way to edit a submission is there?

    52. I wasnt sure how to check the word count exactly without pasting what I wrote into word so I made mine shorter than I was going to just in case. lol. I didnt know people were going to be able to see it along with the photos either XD

    53. If it's before the deadline, please pm me and I can make any corrections for you.

^^ You can type it into a word document and highlight the text that you wish to count. There should be a word count at the bottom of the window, displaying a word count number.

    54. I sent my submission edit, thank you very much for allowing me to do this.

      Good luck to everyone! :aheartbea

    55. Good luck to everyone in this competition. I've been following the posts and very much looking forward to seeing the submissions.

    56. I just submitted mine as well! I uploaded my picture to photobucket because I couldn't get a direct link from Flickr. Meaning, when I previewed my entry with the Flickr link in it, the picture didn't show up. I just got a broken link icon instead. The problem is that the photobucket url has my username in it...is that an issue?

Thanks for this contest! It was loads of fun, and I think I'm actually going to frame my entry and do some more of these for my other dolls :D

    57. No, your username in your photobucket account is not an issue. All entries are reorganized and uploaded onto the DoA servers to maintain anonymity ^^ Just please make sure that your photobucket folder is set to private so that others cannot see ^^

    58. Thanks! Will do :)

    59. You can upload things to imgur as private as well and then you dont have to worry about privacy issues ^^ That's what I use and it automatically sets my images to private unless I change the settings or upload them into a public album :]

    60. I also thought the 50 word limit applied to everything . That's ok thou, I wrote all I wanted.

Good luck everyone! Excited to see what everyone's done! :)
