A few weeks ago I bought a body from another DoA member here in the marketplace. Communication was great, everything went well and I was also provided with a tracking number etc after the item was sent out. Today I then went to pick up the box from the post office and what I got was a severly damaged, more or less ripped box with absolutely no content except for one sheet of packing paper. Not even one single doll part in there. On top of that I believe it is only insured for a fracture of what I had originally paid for it and the lady at the post office also told me that usps got it in that condition already (item was shipped from Canada). My question is now what am I supposed to do with it? Do I have to file an insurance claim with usps so I can at least get some of the money back or is it the seller's turn to do so with their post office, since, as I said, apparently it came to the US in that condition and the seller is the one who had the package insured. I really hope somebody can help me with this. Thanks in advance.
Whoa, what a drag! I believe the person who insured the package has to pursue it on their end. I would have concerns about how it was originally packed by the seller...
That's what I thought. And I don't know about the packing .. It's a normal box, I don't even have an idea how this could have happened to it. Just so you get an idea:
Here's the official USPS information about filing international insurance claims; who does the filing depends on the method of shipping. http://www.usps.com/insuranceclaims/intlclaims.htm Good luck! What a horrible thing to have happen--I really hope you can get as much of the purchase price back as possible.
Personally, I'd file a Paypal claim if you're still within the time to do so (and have paid with Paypal). Let the seller know that it's just to protect yourself and that they have to start the claim for insurance... Though because of the lower amount of insurance purchased that just wouldn't be enough. You don't have to settle for the lower amount. You didn't choose to have the doll insured for less, they chose to insure it for that amount. They are responsible for giving you back the whole amount since you paid that and didn't get the doll, but they'll have to eat the loss because of what they chose to do.
I agree with Suuchan, work with the seller on the insurance (they'll probably need photos of the box, I'd think) but file a Paypal claim to cover yourself in case things go badly. I had a doll arrive in a box that was ripped so badly down one side that I could reach in and pull out things, and I asked the postal worker about how claiming for insurance works in case anything was missing or damaged - she said the seller would have to do the claim, since she was the one who'd bought the insurance in the first place. Luckily for me there was nothing missing or broken so I didn't have to deal with it.
if you paid through paypal - file a claim ASAP! a similar thing happened to me once, and it took over 30 days to resolve - but i finally did get my money back. so sorry this happened to you!
I think the box was probably insured the way a company would, to be safe of charge fees. If the box had tracking force your post office to run with that # on who all had your box and get to the bottom of it. I doubt the woman/man at your specific p.o. knows what condition it arrived in to the country in as boxes make multiple stops. so go back through your p.o. and MAKE them track it backwards, thats usually how they find the culprit. Your seller also needs to get in touch with her/his p.o. about everything. I only say this because its not really fair to instantly be all PAYPAL CLAIM NOW without trying to find a solution first i hope you find it!
I had a similar situation, a box sent to me had been ripped open/robbed of items, I was able to find out it had probably happened in a New York sorting facility (I actually had a postal inspector working on this at one point). It doesn't get you any money, and it doesn't get you anything back, but if something criminal happened with your package, you have to keep in mind that this is the greater good, so if you have the opportunity to pursue that course of action, you and the seller should. Marking the insurance down was not too swift, although I understand the reasoning behind it, and everyone clamoring for you to file a PayPal claim is also correct. It does suck, but it's not a personal thing, it's a circumstance thing. I wish you good luck, I really do, because that stomach-dropping feeling when you see the package really sucks. .hlp
I agree everything needs to be tracked back, but there is a time limit on making Paypal claims, and ESPECIALLY with it being insured for less than it was worth - a Paypal claim is a necessary precaution. A Paypal claim isn't a punitive thing, its a "covering your butt" thing. And it needs to be done before the time limit is up. It also provides another "paper trail" for the information.
Yes i agree BUT by filing this then the seller who isn't at fault either is out the money and the body. While neither of them want to take a huge loss its sometimes easier to come up with a compromise if going through the P.O. and stuff doesnt work out. While i get wanting all your money back i guess im not seeing it from the buyer's p.o.v. and rather what's fair between the two partys who are both victims now to the failure of the p.o.
Would you mind elaborating on why this purchase wasn't insured for the full amount you paid? Did you pay the seller for shipping and insurance?
Because the item value was downmarked on the box and I didn't ask for that. And yes, I'm pretty sure I paid for shipping and insurance. Could you delete this thread, please?
We can certainly lock the thread - have you gotten the answers you required? Do you feel that a Negative Transaction thread regarding the situation needs to be opened in our Problem Feedback subforum?
Locking it would be great, yes. People have been very helpful and I've sorted things out with the seller now.
