Realistic eyes 101

    1. Posts like these make me giddy and eager to try new stuff with my doll XDD

    2. Crazy how different they look from each other. The more realistic scaling is so lovely, I really love the way the scaling made her stare go away. Beautiful.
And thank you so much for piling up and sorting all this information. This is by far one of the most interesting and helpful threads I have ever read.

    3. You are very welcome! I'm glad you find it useful. I am rethinking my measuring formula and might replace that, as it only works with realistic shaped eyes. For rounder eyes, it's the distance between upper and lower lid that matters, so I will have a think about that.

And we could do with some more examples in here. In spite of growing demand, there are still too few people making small iris eyes. This needs to be addressed!

    4. Somehow it's odd that exactly this topic isn't that popular. Or is it just me? Well, like you said it depends on the shape of the eye how big the iris should be done to achieve a realistic look. Even if it sounds kind of odd: I love that you're such a passionate perfectionist measuring everything yourself. To be honest, the possibility to create your own style in really EVERY part of bjds is what dragged me into the beautiful pit of dolls years ago. Since you can do a lot of change just by adjusting the size of the iris, how about changing the size of the pupil as well? One of my best friends always has that super cute look just because her pupil is much wider than usual without having that weird cute-look you get by putting circle lenses on. Might be interesting as well.

    5. This tutorial is extremely helpful! Thank you so much! Just wondering has anyone ever got a right ice blue from Thomas Baez...It's such a pretty advertise on their website...!

    6. @OnlyPaintMode, sorry for the delay in responding. Only just seen this. Well, my perfectionism and dissatisfaction have lead me to the final step, which is making my own. Easier than I had thought. And, now that I can make my own, I am finding that 0.5mm can make a difference between sort-of-right and just-right. As I am using printed irises, I can make them in 0.5mm increments. So, I am sorted.

@tinana, not I. The ones I got were dark blue. Eyeco have so far been the only ones I have found with realistic light blue irises. However, they are still too large for most realistic dolls, so meh.

    7. I want to graciously thank you for being generous about sharing all of this amazing information. I am just starting out into this magical hobby and finding the perfect eyes is very important to me. For me, the eyes are one of the most important traits for a doll, and I do believe that the eyes really are the windows to the soul. I sincerely thank you again for all of your work and for graciously sharing it with rest of us. You have taught me something important and helpful.:)

    8. You are very welcome. I'm glad it was useful.

    9. This is a super resource- thank you so much for the detail and work you put into this. :D

    10. Hello! I still waiting for my first bjd doll, so this will be very helpful when she arrives! But, I can add that I bought mudoll eye putty from DDE and paste it to a piece of paper and at the same time, I put in another piece of paper poster putty (the brand UHU patafix) I can say that after a couple of months, the mudoll putty left an oily residue, and the UHU tack left absolutely nothing. Of course I can not test it in the doll because she is not with me yet, but if you can have the opportunity of buy it and test it, maybe it will be helpful? By the way, sorry for my English, it's not my first language. And thank you so much for your post! :love

    11. Thanks for that. Poster tac does seem to be a safe option generally, with no damage to doll or eyes. Proprietary eye putty, on the other hand, can be unbaked polymer clay, which can cause problems. Perhaps that is what the eye putty you used was.

    12. Thank you very much for sharing! Now I know where to get bjd eyes!

    13. Did you ever come up with your new formula? I'm very curious about this!
