Raw Sculpey as Armature

Dec 9, 2011

    1. Anyone else ever used raw sculpey as an armature for their doll instead of foil or foam? I got the idea last night! I made the armature from some of my raw sculpey and then covered it in DAS clay. This morning it was mostly dry. I cut it up where I want joints in the torso to be, and the soft sculpey came right out without breaking the body and it also left the inside nice and smooth! I'll definitely be trying that again :D The inside of my body piece was still a little damp inside, but now that the sculpey is out, its drying nicely.

    2. What a good idea! But didn't the sculpey squish when you tried to put the das over top? I feel like that would be a problem that would bother me ><

    3. I think sculpy is hard enough if you put it into the freezer for a bit.
Good idea Clarinet. I was thinking of using my oil based sculpthing clay covered by plastic, but that leaves stains. Your technique is better. Maybe you could even bake sculpy and make it the base armature if you intend to use it for many sculpts.

    4. I actually did this for one of my WIPs several months ago. I put tape over a wire armature, and super sculpey over that. Unfortunately the adhesive in the tape did something funny to the texture of the sculpy, so now it is unfit for anything other than armature clay.

Loved how it worked though. I found that if you make the sculpy armature, wait a few days for it to firm back up before putting the paperclay over it, since sculpy gets soft from working in warm hands.

    5. Yes, it just happens to be cold enough in my house that the sculpey didn't just squish when I put the air-dry clay over it :)
