I've been interested in BJDs for a while, and working on various doll sculpting projects, some more traditional BJD, some a mix of other jointing/posing techniques with different materials. I wanted to return to a more classic ABJD look, and see what happened at a larger scale. I'm calling this SD-sized, but since I don't own any SDs, I'm just winging it from what I remember. He will be approximately that, I think ^_^ Since I will be making my own clothes, it shouldn't matter if the measurements are lined up exactly. Wish me luck with this one! I am trying to get a smooth, professional look, which I usually abandon for the sake of getting the dolls finished, painted, and strung faster (impatient... T_T) I'm looking into casting the final sculpt, too. I'll post up my plans soon, too, so you can see what I'm planning for the body. Thanks for looking!
his face certainly looks like it's going good! i love the shape of his eyes! are you going to keep his ears so simplistic? or are you looking at adding more detail to them? otherwise all i can say is good luck with the rest of him! cant wait to see more!
Thanks shelbelly ^__^ You know, I hadn't really thought about the ears until you mentioned it. I guess they could stand a bit more detail.. I'm used to working smaller, so usually it's much harder ^_^; But I'll go for it. Thanks for pointing it out!
Looking good! I really like the nose But the ears seem to be a bit low. if you're going for anatomically correct, it's good to remember that the ear meets the head aligned with the corner of the eye at the top, and with the nostril at the bottom.. Here's a pic of what I mean (snagged off somewhwere) : But it's not that bad if you don't fix it. it looks very nice as is too
Ahh, you're right, luopio. maybe it's just that the ears are too long? I'm going to rework them anyway ^_^ I'll just take a bit off of the bottom of the earlobe so it'll look more natural. Thank you!
Well, I loaded your profile image & that diagram into photoshop and sized them to proportion with one another and it was mainly the angle the head was resting at. After I put it to the same angle as the drawing you're doing pretty good. Here: Hope this helps guide you in the right direction
its so strange suddenly working in a larger scale isnt it! (i'm the same most of my other work is alot smaller scale! XD) good luck with him none the less cant wait to see more!
Oh, yeah ^_^ You're right about the angle. I'm glad to see the other things are more or less lining up, too, I sort of tackled it without a lot of reference, at the get-go. And of course, dolls are allowed to have different facial proportions-- they're dolls, right? I'll have new pictures up soon, I have to first find my dremel ^_^; Starting the torso next! But as far as I'm concerned, everything is fun and games until the knee joints... no matter how many different ways I try, they always suck... I know! There is a lot of advantage to the detail, but I had to reinforce it so it'd hold up it's own weight.. I used to do thinner coats of paperclay..
