Anyone else collecting the new rainbow high fashion dolls? I only have one so far but I really like them. I have a tendency to pick a colour and theme my dolls around it anyway. Also I think whoever designed them is kinda familiar with BJDs. Some of the joint placement feels similar, the hip joints in particular. They have inset eyes, and 1 comes with changeable wigs. I don't know, just seems like something others on here might like.
I've heard that a BJD collector that is well known on instagram might have been involved in the design. The joints however look a lot better on paper than in person. They look double jointed, but only bend at 90° angles. You have to shave off excess plastic, then the knees bend all the way and the elbows get just a little bit more reach. That hip joint feel so reminescent of fairyland, but as far as I can tell it does nothing at all. I like them overall though. I kind of collect fashion dolls and I've been a big fan of Bratz for a long time.
I didn't know that they have inset eyes and wigs! I really want the green girl (Jade I think is her name) and I primarily wanted one for the clothes but with good jointing I'd probably attempt to customize her after all.
Yeah I agree that the joints don't work as well as they should, and I've seen some modded to work much better. But I do still think they were attempting to make them more like bjd, even if they didn't quite get there. (Also I think "that instagrammer" was only involved in makeup design on the cheer line) Only Avery has wigs so far. But for playline dolls the articulation is decent, and the hair and clothes are good quality. The eyes aren't meant to be changed, but it is possible.
Does that mean Avery is bald under or is it like those SnapStars where they have painted on short hair?
I have seen them, and have been slightly tempted by the peach-toned one (I don't know them by name). However, I'm not a fan of fashion dolls with giant heads -- I made a huge exception with Pullip and friends, because I love the aesthetics, which are completely different (IMHO) from wester fashion dolls, because they were designed by Korean artists. I have heard mixed reviews on the quality as well, and for the price I think I might as well pass on them. I don't like their faces, and their fashion is also not my cup of tea. So, having questionable QC, makes me less likely to purchase them. I guess for what they are they probably seem like really unique dolls, but owning such wide variety of toys myself, I don't feel I can justify the price, unless I was completely in-love with them. Or, at the very least their quality justified the price (and not the extra accessories). DX
It was seeing them IRL and the face design that finally turned me off, otherwise I might have been interested in getting my color. If you want that big head look I'd point you towards something like Hujoo. I have an older Berry who has the big head, lips, and hips with all the posing joys of string joints.
Hmm everyone has preference but I felt the same way about hujoo. I do not like their faces, and I had a hujoo body once to try to use for a custom and didn't think it was worth the price.
I love thier color palettes and clothing but i really wish they had normal sized heads. I'm definitely going to get Karma though.
I just picked up Avery and Bella. They’re really cute little dolls. I think the quality is decent for playline dolls. I heard they just released a boy, as well (like literally the last day or two) so I might be hunting him down as well.
Yeah the boy is pretty cute, ill probably get a couple extra of him to customize so there is more than just 1 boy. Also it's kind of a joke, the first boy in the line is named River Kendall= ken doll. Here's a pic of after I styled Violets hair
That is really cute! I love her hair bow! And yeah, I read that too about the boy and his name. Kendall = Ken Doll. That’s a cute play on words. lol I’m sure down the line they’ll release more boys. I’ve also seen bigger versions of the girls but I don’t like the “fashion packs” they come with. I’ve never been a fan of slime to start with, so filling skirts and jackets with it just seems like a disaster in the making, IMO. Especially if you’re gifting it to a younger child to play with.
Thank you! Her hair is really fun to play with, soft and really pretty she has a bunch of colours mixed together. And the slime stuff is gross. Also the big ones are not articulated or have inset eyes, so yeah I'm not interested in those either
I like rainbow high dolls! they have a cute face and they have so many joints like a bjd. They came at the right time. For a good few years I feel like no companies made nice playline fashion dolls and then MGA stepped up the game with both L.O.L OMG (I don´t personally like those) Na.Na.Na surprises and then rainbow high fashion dolls. I only have one RH at the moment. Poppy rowan with her orange and butterfly theme. The new cheer doll line designed butterfly make up on her is stunning! I will for sure grab her if she is available in stores (not online) I must say that their poseability is a bit limited even though they have so much articulation. I remember reading a lot of disappointment on youtube that made it seem like the heads could move much more than what we got in real life. The peg snap in, in their hands also breaks easily. So I rarely "play" with them as I would with real bjd dolls. And then there is the ever "either you like it or against same face syndrome for every character". But that has something to do with costs of making these dolls for what the retail price is. I like them for what they are. even those I will not buy for my collection, they are a nice fresh new thing as a doll playline for children and collectors.
On another forum someone has been giving the cheerleaders a bit of a make over. Their skin isn't as shiny and without the face paint they look better.
Here's one of mine I customized, I dyed her hair, painted her lips and shoes and sewed all her outfit.
I'm not a fan of the make up style at all, but that's just because I am a weirdo who doesn't like make up in general. More so the heavier types. I'm weird (female) old-fart, who has never worn make up in my entire life, that's how much I dislike it. ^^;; Is the head a soft vinyl, semi or hard vinyl plastic, or other kind? I don't like how large the heads are, I feel like if they were somewhat smaller I would probably get one, but the giant heads really don't appeal to me (among other things). I am a bit tempted by the boy, but again the giant head. If I did get him however (if he goes on clearance like most mass-produce male dolls tend to), I would want to shrink his head. That's why I want to know if what kind of plastic the heads are. Although, I guess I could just Google it... DX
Thank you! She was a bella originally, and I dyed her hair with rit dye And @Enzyme the heads are like semi hard vinyl I think, I've been rerooting them too, and the heads are firm but not so hard that its difficult to root so that's what I judging it by. So I'm not sure if shrinking would work or not, I don't have the boy yet but the girl that can wear wigs fit 7" wigs.
@whooganana, thank you so much for that info! 7", wow, that's pretty big for an 11-inch doll. Lol! I'm not an expert on shrinking heads, only done it on MH, but if I recall correctly from my lurking in 1:6 action figure forums, any vinyl plastic that's not hard PVC can be shrunk. I'll see if I can get the boy, nude for less than retail (probably not likely). Thanks again! (:
I am a little hooked on the MGA dolls! So far I just have one NaNaNa, but I got her at the thrift store for $1. I am looking for some good deals on the RH and LOL OMG to dip my toes in before I go nuts. They all seem expensive for what they are, but maybe it is because I have been out of the doll market for a couple of years. Also, they are all 3 very hot lines right now. I want to do a Betty Boop from a RH and a LOL. Their flat little faces demand it! I would like to find a good bjd head for a Betty Boop as well, but the face shape is a hard one to find.
Yes! I've also thought about doing betty boop from a LOL it would be perfect. I think if I do I'm going to try to do grayscale/b+w. Also powerpuff girls.. And I'm currently working on Jessica Rabbit from a bratz head on lol body
I've recently picked up a few dolls (Kia first, which led me to getting Ruby and Bella). I never considered myself a fan of the big head trend, like Bratz or MH, but the apparent articulation, hair, and clothing kinda convinced me. My fiance has been having a blast brushing out their hair, and will eventually style them, and I really like some of the clothing pieces. They're definitely playline toys and have seen varying quality between just the three dolls themselves. The gel their hair comes covered in is gross and, while they look great in box, they all look balding when you take them out because of how the hair is styled. The clothing also has some issues, especially with Bella's tights and skirt. I really like her pink leather jacket tho, and that honestly was a reason I chose her. I'm kinda having fun with them now, and am interested in getting River and the fashion studio set so I can have a boy doll and a doll that I could put other wigs on. All in all I'd have to agree they make better dress and pose dolls than the type of more active play I remember doing with dolls.
Sounds like your fiance would like those make over fail dolls. Maybe get them one of those Barbie styling heads for a gift?
I own almost all of the series 1 and series 2 RH dolls. Just missing Avery, Jade, Kia, River, Amaya (Hair Studio version), and Krystal. I'm skipping the Cheerleader versions of the series 1 dolls, though. I haven't been this invested in a play toy since G3 My Little Pony. Rainbow High dolls actually rekindled my interest in BJDs after being gone for 10 years since they reminded me so much of BJDs with how their hinged joints look like BJD joints.
I recently got Bella, really loving her style! I did swap a smaller head onto her so she fits in better proportionally with my other dolls, but I think her face and hair are also really pretty so idk if I'll end up doing something else with the head later. She's able to share some of her clothes with my monster high and BJD so that's a nice bonus! It would be really awesome if they put out fashion packs in the future
Fashion packs would be great! There is a rumor fashion packs are in the works, but also that they will be "surprise" blind bags that you won't know what you get till you open them...
That makes sense for MGA... I'd probably still buy some for fun and then overpay for the items I actually want on ebay Side rant- It annoys me that clothing sets for currently available playline dolls sell for almost as much as the full doll, but when I want more clothing options but not more dolls I buy it anyways
I don't have any Rainbow High dolls because I simply can't get past the huge head and eyes, but I love the outfits (especially Bella's and Poppy's). I'm really hoping MGA releases fashion packs for the RH line, I'd definitely get them and try to squeeze my other dolls into them.
One thing I think isn't advertised well is Ruby has a hole in her head for her baseball cap. I'm assuming River has the same thing, so they could swap hats, but that means the hats won't work with any of the other dolls.
I wasn't interested in an Amaya doll, but I might get it just to experience a doll that size I just hope she doesn't have the same goop on her hair out of the box
I like the series 2 Amaya but her hair really is a mess. Of the 4 RH I have, her outfits had the most problems. The socks ripped and the shoes are very hard to put on
I love rainbow high! It's actually what got me back into doll collecting after 8ish years away. I watch a doll customizer on youtube (Hextian) and then it started recommending rainbow high and LOL OMG doll vids to me. At first I just enjoyed watching doll content, but I was shopping in Target for my son and saw a Violet in person and couldnt stop thinking about how cute she was! A few days later I broke down and ordered Sunny from Amazon. Now I have 6, and two LOL OMGs. They remind me of pullips which I used to collect before I was into BJDs. The quality control is a little crazy, so I recommend buying them in person if you can so you can check for flaws. I ordered Sunny and Bella on Amazon and they both came with flaws. Annoying, but they are so cheap compared to BJDs I cant complain much. Funny thing, the fashion doll community who collects RH and LOL dolls are always complaining about price points. If they only knew how much we spend here in the BJD community! ha
Same, I have a 2yr old and a 4yr old and I haven't really had time to do much with my bjds since they were born, I still had a couple displayed so I could look at them and still look on here regularly, but hadn't made them anything in a long time. My husband got me violet as a surprise and I started playing with her and it got my creativity going making little things for RH felt easy and I've sewn/crocheted some things for them, And that inspired me to start working on clothes for my big girls and get them looking nice again too. (Also I love hextian too)
I'm really excited for the colors in wave 3! I need an icy and mint colored doll The wait times in the BJD hobby are long, and BJDs are so complex/fragile, for mommies/daddies in doll collecting its nice to have a collection that you can next day from amazon or pickup while shopping at Target! Easy and quick, how we like things as parents haha. I swear before I had a kid I ordered like one thing a month on Amazon. Now I next day everything. Hextian so crazy talented! I'd kill to own one of their dolls.
I saw a recommendation to use dish soap with a small amount of conditioner to wash with, and I tried that with the Krystal doll I just got and it definitely worked. I tried a wash and conditioner separate with Kia and the smell was way weird and I ended up re-washing. Comparing the two, the small bit of conditioner in the wash definitely helped with combing out and the texture feel. I had the same issue with Belle's tights! They have a rip in them from putting them on. I noticed that Krystal's tights seemed much sturdier putting them on. Unfortunately, when trying to put the shoes over the tights it did rip at the foot seem until we thought to pull the tights off a bit to give the shoes excess fabric to pull on. Her strappy shoes don't have a back slit like Belle's do, so it's a bit of a tighter squeeze to put on. I honestly think Hextian needs his own thread in the brig . And I took your advice when buying Krystal - I compared the four or five dolls Target had in one of the two displays to find the one that had the cleanest knees, hands, and hair styling. Even so, my Krystal has two matching holes on either side of her behind and a weird splatter behind her neck that I'm hoping I can magic erase, but otherwise would be hidden by her hair. My Kia doll has a hole in her knee that you wouldn't be able to check for because she wears pants in the box, but seeing it is what made me make sure to look at Krystal's.
Hey - for people who own some of the Rainbow High dolls.... Do their clothes fit MSD sized BJDs? Some of these outfits are so fun, but I think I'd be inclined to customize the RH dolls and use their clothing for other purposes if I got any. Also one favor if someone's willing to take a measurement - how long are their feet? Thanks in advance
No they wouldn't, they fit yosd. I've been using blythe and kikipop pattern to make clothes for mine, that work great and 1 of my Blythes is wearing some RH clothes
In case anyone wanted some visuals, i recently bought some of the Rainbow High clothes on ebay. People sell them there for decent prices. First is on Eclipse, my Little Monica Muse Sarubia (the string version) It's a bit loose but with just some extra velcro, it'll fit perfect. The jackets are great! The dark purple outfit had a shiny tube top that was much to loose for her top but DID fit as a tiny mini skirt (upper right). Guess she's going to the club with that one. I also tried it on Razzleberry, my Luts Lolo that has the tiny20 body The skirt was very very loose and wouldn't stay up unless i tucked the shirt in. The jackets are a bit long for the arms, but hey, i have that problem with all my long sleeves in real life. The dress fit really well! She'll be keeping the dress and pink jacket on for now I hope this helps someone out with the size! I'll be buying more since i loved a lot of the clothes when i saw them at Target
I love the new face mold they did with the twins. Mine should be coming in the mail from Target. They look really pretty. I’m a bit underwhelmed with Jett Dawson’s looks after seeing the leak just a few minutes, though.
I like the new face a lot too. Its subtle differences but next to the others its noticeable. Jetts hair and casual outfit are cute but I'm very confused by the fancy dress that is red for some reason. And sidenote but I'm way more excited about the twins than from the first pics, because my name is laurel and I NEVER saw my name on stuff growing up, the only place I'd ever seen it was from the comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver(Ollie) Hardy. I think that's where they got their names too.
I would like to point out that RH heads look lovely on MSD-sized bodies, for anyone looking to hybrid. And I really love putting Liv Doll (Spinmaster) heads on RH bodies and using BJD wigs. Also - LOL OMG shoes fit Rainbow High feet pretty well. So do Robert Tonner shoes, interestingly enough, and vice versa.
Also - if you haven't seen it, Poppen Atelier (YouTube) took a Dremel tool to the joint in the back of the knees. If you sand a little valley/divet in the solid plastic bar, the knee becomes double jointed.
I go back and forth on these dolls. I love the clothing, but the dolls are hit or miss for me. I am liking the newer waves more with the less shiny faces. I bought several of the dolls when they first came out to pilfer the clothes for my Momonita, but I recently bought several dolls because I like the actual dolls. I have all the OMG dolls and don't plan to be a completist with the RH dolls. I have been buying the ones that keep sucking me in (The Devious set, Krystal, Kia, Karma, Stella, Bailey, the Amaya rainbow hair studio doll and recently the wave two Amaya because she was too cheap to pass up lol)
I'm in the same boat of loving the clothing but not being the biggest fan of the dolls. I love using the clothes for my Depths Dolls Lichen! I had to take out the bottoms a bit to fit her, but the shirts are fun. Layering over a jacket was .. almost impossible but I tried anyway I think I'm going to try to keep collecting the clothes because of just how fun and fashionable they can be! I'm almost considering getting another Depths Dolls doll just so I can dress more dolls in them.... Edit: Woops with her leg band falling down I'm now realizing this top photo of her looks like... she's been out partying... all night. Lmao.
I've been thinking of getting an extra one to try shrinking the head, to see what it looks like ' I'm not a super fan of oversized heads, but these dolls do (mostly) have the bundles to make up for it.
Soooo I said I wasn't planning to be a completist with these dolls but...smh, they make me so happy when I look at them. The colors draw me in and I love the big eyes. The big heads don't bother me, I kind of like it actually. I think MGA is really doing something right with their doll lines. I have really missed being able to go look at dolls in person, I know I keep saying this but I am seriously excited about all these dolls!
I have four of them. Originally just got two girls for customizing, but they were too cute and I've since grabbed another of the girls and then grabbed River solely for the fact that I didn't want to miss out on another boy doll since the MH and EAH boys disappeared before I had a chance to snag any of them. I'll still be getting one or two to customize but they will probably have to be alt versions of the girls I have already or it'll never happen.
Oh I've found my people!! I love the Rainbow High dolls, and my niece (11) has gotten into them too! She's always collected Barbie and loved my BJDs so I knew she'd like them and got her one. Right now I'm only missing the blue (Skyler) one from series one. I want the light pink (Bella) from series two for sure, and possibly neon (Karma) and Kia. When series 3 comes I'm eyes rose and orchid, the clothing and character sketches look dope af! I'd actually only bought the yellow and dark purple for myself when a friend gave me their collection to share with my niece! They were from their ex and had bag memories attached. I'm going to build a shelf for them soon! If anyone is looking to get rid of Amaya's cheer outfit btw, let me know!! I want it but not the doll haha.
Not sure where you are located but Walmart in the US has Amaya for only $15, which even though you don't want the doll is probably what you would pay just for the outfit anyway if not more. You could always sell the doll in the other outfit to recoup the cost so essentially getting the outfit for free.
Whaaaat why is it so cheap?? My Brice actually loves the doll and the other outfit so I'll just get it and gift her that part haha. Thanks for the heads up!!
I snagged Winter Break Jade and Poppy from Walmart’s website. I’ve been refreshing all day to try to get Sunny, as well, but no luck so far. I haven’t seen links floating around for Skyler, Violet, or Ruby yet, but hopefully they’ll pop up soon (maybe next eeek when I have money for them again. LOL!) Jett Dawson is also scheduled for a preorder soon, and I have her Walmart link saved, but I’m probably going to wait to buy her in-store from Target because she’s pretty pricey.
