Sweet ! Plans are in the works for a skin tight leather outfit.. this seems to be the key to one of my big problems ! .. Better than a second body.. I don't mind jamming pins into duct tape ! Thanks a ton !
I read an article in a Threads magazine on making a dress form out of a large black trash bag, duct tape and batting. I didn't think about applying the same concept for a doll form. I was going to buy a mini dress form pin cushion from Hancock Fabrics and add batting in order to match my dollie measurements. You have saved me $$$, time, and energy. Thanks so much!!!
I didn't read this whole thread but I'd like to point out that you can use the duct tape to make a flat pattern to make a cloth dress form. and also be warned sticking straight pins in duct tape is not fun, and pulling them out is gooey, and gooey on fabric too. I shall try this though...*adds to list as #90something*..lol
great tutorial. I use that method for clothing when making it for friends, I have their body doubles all over my basement lol, never thought to do that with a doll though! fallen fae: that is a great idea, Ive been thinking of how to do clothes accurately for doll sizes I dont have. that just brightened my day, thank-you!
gonna see if i can convice my friend if i can do this to her soom DIA...cos i like makin dresses, but im sure boy wont like wearing them lol
This is awesome! My boy is going to hate me when I'm through turning him into a tape mummy to make manny-kin for a friend. >>;;
going to have some time off going to try my hand at making one. i have 4 different size dolls to do this for! XD
what a great idea!! I was wondering how I was going to make stuff for my boy when he came and now you've made it so easy Thank you
I made one for Andre. I decided to try and make one with legs too so that I could pattern pants like someone sugessted. I'll post a link to the pics. I used ceran wrap and a LOT of duct tape. Unfortunatly, his hips twisted a bit, but I don't think it'll be much of a problem. I had to cut the arms and legs completely open to get the form off his body. It took and entire bag of 300 cotton balls to stuff the form. It is a cenimeter too big, but that's fine. I used hot glue to secure the dowels to the bottom and to reinforce where they enter the leg. I used a level to adjust how far in the dowels went...this forms stands as tall as Andre does sans his head. http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a66/Farrh/Andre%20Duct%20Tape%20form/
Something to keep in mind that I saw on Thread bangers a DIY sewing show on youtube they do one (for a human) but instead of duct tape they use water activated packing tape i think would work better.. no sticky residue no duct tape smell on the clothes... defiantly on my to do projects though i think ill cover it in fabric for aesthetic reasons
I'm making one right now. ^_^ And it's out of purple duct tape. All I need is to stuff it, and I'm good.
I made one for myself out of paper packing tape, and it does make a much stiffer model. However, it was hard to get it smooth on mine, so you might bear that in mind when doing the doll. You want the strips to be pretty narrow. I did cover mine with fabric, but bear in mind that every layer adds to the size; doesn't matter much for a full sized one, but people are saying it will add a full centimetre to the doll's measurements. For some things that's just good ease, for some it may be too much. I knew about this a long time ago, and I can't figure out why it didn't occur to me to make it for the dolls!
Veeery nice! Wonderful suggestion, especially for people like me who are just starting this hobby & have recieved their first doll! Thank you so much. I need to make my baby a kimono. So I might just add arms to mine. ~
Oh man, it's been a long time since I eye balled this thread - lots of great comments and suggestions! I might see about maybe trying this with painter's tape (less residue in the sticky stuff category than duct tape, as well as less bulk) sometime next weekend, and seeing if that works as well. I haven't tried doing a lower body work up with it, though I'm sure it's absolutely possible. I might try that, too, and of course take pictures.
wow this is an amazing idea! great way to save money as well when you're on a low budget for dolly accessories
It also helps to mark the line you'll cut on with a sharpie, and place "X"s up that line, so you can match up the two edges more exactly once you cut the Duct Tape Dummy off the doll.
WOW! you're a genius, I love it. That is so easy and smart, what a great way to make a dress form. I'l be doing that for sure, THANK YOU!
Super awesome! I'm gonna make myself one, but I think I'll fill mine with plaster instead (although yours can be pricked by needles, so I'll have to think about that). Thanks!!
Wow thankyou so much for this! The pictures were incredibly helpful, this is going to be my job over the weekend!
AMAZIN! JUST AMAZIN! I can't wait to get my girl an unleash all my creativity!! yay! I'm hoping to make most if not all my doll's (a fairyland Ante Pukifee) clothes! I keep an eye out for pretty fabric in kids clothes at the second hand store, if there is a stain on it, you can usually get it for FREE! I tell you, having a friend that works at Value Village is awesome! thanks so much for this!!
Awseome. I'll have to try this on my next day off. Has anyone tried using paper mache instead of duct tape?
I think paper mache would be too stiff, and the pins might not stick in it as well. And getting it off the doll might be harder too. Duct tape has a little more give and stretch to it than paper mache. I've made two dress forms so far. An SD girl and an MSD girl. I used white duct tape cause I thought it looked nicer. And I wrapped the whole legs separately so I could make pants and stuff too. The first time I tried it I ended up with quite a few scratches on the body, but I was able to sand them away. I think it's cause the scisors I used were too big. The second time I did much better. I carefully used a very sharp Xacto knife instead of scissors, and there were only a couple of very very tiny scratches that I got rid of with a swipe or two of fine sandpaper. I plan on making a third form for my Delf boy (since he's a pretty standard size too) And this time I plan on placing a thin strip of sticky felt along the lines I am going to be cutting on to prevent ALL scratching. I'll take pics of them if I can remember. Not that I've used the dress forms yet, but they're there if I want to make something for my dolls. I was hoping making the dress forms would motivate me to sew for the dolls more and use up all the fabric I have hoarded up over time.
Thank you I've seen this done for people, and wondered how it would work on a doll without damaging it. I'll buy manicure scissors first
I've made forms for my friends and I this way, and they worked great. Funny it never occurred to me to make Ren one... Thanks for posting!
I've been wanting one of these for like 2 years! The problem I have is trying to find a crafty friend to help me do it properly no one crafts, so no one cares I wonder if my fiancee would be willing to tape me without taping my mouth first I mean LOL
if i had some duck tape... and a pole of some sort... i would so make one of these right this second! im forever looking for something like this to subsitute my boys. that way i dont have to continue to take em off the shelve and undress them...then dress them again ect... lol with this it should be much easier! Thanks!
Wow! Genius! Definately have to try this when I get my doll. I know I will be making many outfits for her!
Wow, I've done these before for me and other people, it never occurred to me to do one for the dolls. This is perfect, since I like to make stuff for my friend's dolls, but don't have the dolls with me much. What a great idea!
Wow, thanks so much. I was planning on making a dress for my friend for her birthday, but she has an SD girl, and me only having an MSD boy that's sortov a problem. xD I'll just get her to make one of these. Yay!
I'm such a nit wit.. I keep fretting about draping ON dolls. (Pins scratching the blushing being a primary concern) I don't know why I didn't think of this.. I make HUMAN sized duct tape dummies all the time, and it simply never occurred to me to do this for a DOLL. *facepalm*
This is awesome, I hadn't thought about doing this for a doll, I had one made for myself, when my friend was doing cosplay costumes, and it worked great, until I gained weight, but I wouldn't have that problem with a doll. ^.^ --EDC
Oh yay! Ive been getting friends make my BJD mini clothes and this will help big time (they wont expect me to leave her at their house... where she could get damaged!) Thankyou!
