Hi! I'm almost finished with my first head mold (still got the ears to do) and I'm using airdry paperclay. What's the best way to go about sanding and sealing the head? What material should i use for sealing? I just read Shuen's thread about her mold and she uses liquid putty and other things that I really don't have access too... any suggestions on what kind of material to use and wher eto get it? thanks!
i have used paperclay to try to make a BJD before. I wouldn't advise using it. It is not strong enough, and breaks so easily. It is also VERY dusty and seems to easily decompose. I have not used any other air dry clays, but other people on this board use LaDoll. It is hard to find, and I am too lazy to order it from some international website. I use super sculpy.... If you must use the paperclay, I would say you could go to the art supply store and get some spray-on acrylic fixativ, or even get some sandable primer.
Yeah I'm finding that out now.. it's not toooo bad.. I've tried using supersculpy but it gets too mushy and I find i work better with waterbased clays... Yeah I think sandable primer would be best I'll probably give super sulpey another shot as well
If you're going to cast it, the super sampler kit from smooth on comes with a spray on sealer for porus stuff. :3
I'm actually under the impression that you could just use a spray paint on it. I wouldn't recommend a clear one, since it might not allow you to see where your project is flawed. But, when I did my first doll (which wasn't a bjd, but this still applies), I wanted the surface to be really smooth, but I was using bisque. It's really tough to get that stuff smooth if you don't sand before firing. I sanded a bit after it was fired, and then I used a few coats of white spray paint. It made a really good seal to it, and since paperclay is more porous, it would probably adhere to it really great.
