Hi everyone. I hope this is the right section for this question. I was wondering for those who work with sculpey do you use a primer after your sculpt has been completed and if so what do you use? I'm guessing a it is better to use a spray primer to get a smooth even finish or are there any primers that brush on smoothly? Also I notice that when you make a mold of something smooth and shiny it casts out smooth and shiny so i was wondering is a matte primer casts matte piece?
Rustoleum Auto Primer! It's a spray primer, goes on matte, but can be wet sanded until shiny. I never had luck with anything brush-on, it took twice as long to sand out the brushstrokes. And yes, the cast will be the same level of shiny as you piece. But mold release is a factor. That's usually why junk casts are shinier, because the residue is still there from mold making.
If youre using polyclay you need to find an acrylic based primer as some of the solvents in some primers react with the clay and will stay sticky
Thank you so much for your answers. I want my dolls to look professionally finished and as close to the image i have in my head as i can get it so this step is important. I was also wondering, Do primers hid some surface imperfections like finger prints and minor scratches?
