Modification Question about elf ear mod

Oct 24, 2024

    1. Hey there,
As the title implies: I have a dc isabel and want to turn her into a centaur lady with elf ears. Rather big ones (like the grace or alan sculpts from dc). I tried making removable ones, but am not happy with how bulky they are. However, I am really scared to permanently altering the head, because its doscontinued :/ I guess I shouldnt be scared cuz I dyed it brown, then soaked it in acetone to remove the dye and have some permanent "damage" from that I guess - no worries, nothing major, she was in the acetone for a very short time (1 or 2 minutes max) but theres some spots on her head lol.
I guess I am just asking for some support and tips concerning a mod like that. Thanks so much in advance!

    2. There's a shop on etsy that sells really nice elf ears in various styles and sizes! It's called GoldDin. I have them in 1/3 and 1/4 sizes and they work beautifully. They attach with, basically, sticky tac.

Edit to say that they're on my dolls Ariathari and Agnes in my doll profiles :)

    3. I have done exactly one ear mod, and got incredibly frustrated with it, so my advice/ experience may not be helpful, but for the kind of ears you'd like to give her, it might help to build up the shape in multiple passes instead of trying to get it all blocked in at once, and to say you can probably use less milliput or apoxie sculpt than you think you need. I found a set of dental tools really handy for sculpting, and I used wooden carving tools (like for whittling) to refine things. One thing I will say that I didn't really see in any of the tutorials or videos i watched trying to figure out why I was having such a hard time, is to make a "snake" of milliput or apoxie specifically to help build the inner curve and upper part of the helix. I tried shaping the ears with just adding the clay to the ears as a whole and doing more to refine the shape after it had cured, but that resulted in them being incredibly flat no matter what i did, even though I thought i had followed the shape of the human ear as it had been sculpted.

    4. Thank you! This is helpful for sure! I probably made the same mistake then, just put it all on in one go and wondered why it didnt work out lol. Ill keep your advice to heart. Did you make removable ones or permanent?

Thanks for the tip! Ill inspect that shop for sure. Although I do want to make it myself and am still undecided whether to make em removable or permanent lol

    5. I made permanent ones since I was shelling a specific character, and I'd already dyed him. I did post progress at different stages in a journal here, in case that's at all helpful, but it's definitely an amateur's work xD I have seen lots of people say that additive mods can be reversed, and if you worked slowly a bit at a time, I can see how that could be true. Milliput carves down pretty easily even without things like a dremel, so if you did decide you didn't want her to have the ears after, you could remove them; it just takes more work to do!

    6. I haven't done elf ears, nor such a large ear additive mod. However, I have added pointy vampire ears, to my largest BJD, using Aves Apoxie Sculpt. You can build it up, so you don't need to worry about it not holding its shape. You can let it cure then add more, clay as needed. You can sand it, carve it or completely remove it right off. I have removed my doll's ear mods once before and completely redone therm again without any issues.

This is the 2nd mod, and it's only the very tips, as Mano already has huge default ears. I did a very heavy shading job on his ears, but the I color matched the clay before mixing the two parts, to match his resin color. Hope that helps.
