Tools Question about dremels

Nov 5, 2007

    1. Ok, I had planned to purchase a dremel saw for doll sculpting, but I wasn't sure if it would work well with clay.

Has anyone ever tried a dremel with clay? I know there are BJD sculpting tutorials using a dremel, but it's only involved in drilling/cutting wooden joints. (I'm using LaDoll Premiere in particular.) The dremel packaging says nothing about clay, only wood/plastic/etc.

    2. The dremel works fine on Ladoll and premier clay. I used a dremel on my doll that I sculpted out of a mix of ladoll and premier. The dremel works fine on super sculpey too.

    3. A dremel will save you SO much time with sanding Super Sculpty.
I only use it to smooth out the larger bumps, etc. then hand sand the rest smooth.
      ^^

    4. Dremel is fantastic with sculpey, especially with sanding, it leaves a wonderful smooth finish!

    5. Dremel also works well on DAS. What kind of clay are you using? If you're talking ceramic clay, it may not be such a good idea, it could tear through that a bit to hard.

    6. Thank you thank you for this information. :D

    7. Hi there -- I use Dremel drills on my cured polymer clay (usually Kato Polyclay or Puppen Fimo) all the time. It works very well even on tiny 8 inch faeries, for wing-wire holes, etc. Never had any trouble thus far!

    8. Thanks so much, that's incredibly helpful everyone! =D

    9. For the people who dremel the center of doll limbs, do you ever have trouble getting all the way through? I can't seem to get through an MSD sized arm.

    10. I love my dremel! :D Great for doing fine drill work (like on doll hands or ears, other small parts). I love those sanding grindy tips like the spheres or polishing tips, good for grinding out details like eye wells inside heads or knee cavitys. Stick a cutting disc on it and you can saw through heads to make headcaps or cut off parts form cast in resin pieces. They have good control for detail work.

Get a multi-speed for sure, the one speeds are always too fast for me! XD And scary! However, to drill through doll parts on dolls MSD size or larger, like legs or bodies after casting or in general, I go for a big normal drill with a torque lock on it, dremels don't have the torque or drill bit size for stuff like that.

    11. Thanks, that's a BIG help! ( I wouldn't have known that otherwise! :D)

    12. From what I can tell, I do'n't think dremels have large enough pieces for that. (I've seen drill bit type ends for them, but none that look long enough for that type of work.)

However, I've found that for an MSD sized arm, building it around a wooden rod (I use a colored pencil, lol) works just fine and the stick slides out of the arm really easily when you're finished.
