Quality loss when uploading pictures

May 19, 2011

    1. Hi guys! :)

I usually upload my pictures to Tinypic, but when I was looking through one of my threads I noticed that all pictures suddenly had artifacts. I don't remember that it was this bad before.
      Examples [1], [2], [3]
My guess is that Tinypic has downsized all pictures so they take up less space, but I think the quality loss makes the pictures look horrible. I like my photos crisp and clear.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there another site where I can upload pictures WITHOUT quality loss? I used to use Imageshack, but I had problems when uploading (resulting in double pictures) and I think it's less userfriendly. I'd also like my pictures to remain on the site, even when I haven't used it for a while.

    2. Most, if not all, of the more user friendly image hosting sites seem to have this image quality degradation problem ... Photobucket appears to be one of the ones with less problems than many others, but they are by no means free of them.
If you want an image host that doesn't compress your photos for you at all, to the best of my knowledge, you're stuck with the ones with less user friendly interfaces.

    3. Thank you for your answer ^^
I think I'm going to use Photobucket, and maybe combine it with Flickr. Considering Flickr is not meant for just hotlinking, I think they would try to keep the photo quality as high as possible ^^

Edit: Gawd, I just found out that Flickr doesn't allow hotlinking... Photobucket it is, then.

    4. Saving your images as a .png rather than a .jpg/jpeg can help sometimes!

    5. Thanks for the tip! ^^ I think png is meant for web design more than for pictures though o:

    6. PNG is just a lossless way of saving your photos, it doesn't really matter what you use it for.

You might also consider using Picasa, the user interface (both the online and desktop versions) is fairly simply and the quality is preserved.
You'll need a gmail account to use it though.

    7. Ah, I hadn't thought of using Picasa! =D That's also a great idea~~
