Quadruped lion-dog "Jaquel" (2/25/07 new pics page 5)

Sep 21, 2005

    1. (See Page 3 for completed pics! ^_^)

( NEW standing pics on page 5 too! )

Meet little Jaquel! :daisy (Pronounced as in “Jacques” Cousteau…or “Jah-kell” if that suits better ^^ both are good). He is a quadruped, anthropomorphized animal ball-jointed doll. He is being made from super sculpey with a thin colored sculpey layer overlay for the coloring (all gradations are being done with the sculpey too! ^^)

He also has THREE loops of elastic (one for body/head, and one loop per leg pair). His wings, ears and tail will be fabric.

He is pretty small…his body is only 7 inches long for an idea of scale. Standing (on all fours) he is about 10 inches tall.

He is going to be a “pet” for Nixie…but don’t tell him that… ^^ heh heh :D

Some pics of him in progress…

      Body and back leg mock-up:

Head with marble eyes (maybe his final eyes):

He's so small I had to use jewerly clasps! O_O I couldn't find small S-hooks...they are held in with steel wire that is put in REALLY securly with lots of twistys

    2. Wow that's amazing! I wish I understood how to make my own doll. My boyfriend says I should try, and I'd really like to make something like an animal. That is just very cool!

where do the leg elastics converge? It doesnt cause them to pull the legs forward?

    3. What a cutey! I love the dolls you sculpt, they are so different from the other stuff out there. I think Tallulah wants a Jaquel of her own. I picture pulled ears and lots of horsey rides, but Jaquel looks sweet enough to bear it with good grace. You're very talented. Again, I can't get over how many talented people there are here. *_*

    4. OMG WOW!!!!

And he has a PEENK HEAD!!!

You do such amazingly articulated limbs . . . and he's got a wonderful sweet face!! Can't wait to see him with the wings on :D

      -- Andi <3

    5. omfg... amazing... *_* sell them!

    6. O.O Jewelry clasps! Great idea!

He looks really neat, I'd like to see him when complete.

    7. Thanks everyone! :daisy I do try to make different stuff, just the way I am ^__^ ! It's fun!

Weeee thanks! ^_^ His legs (each set, front and back) each have their own loop of elastic, just like the loop through a BJD's arms. That way the back legs aren't being pulled forward. There is a seprate loop for the neck/body (it ends in the front of the back end of him)

    8. "Peenk"? :? .... I dunno what that means  ....what does it mean?

Glad you like him! He is indeed very... different. ^^ hehe!

    9. Pink! I think. ;3

I very much like your creations. :chibi

    10. weeee!!!
I am also making a little cat for my minimay (he's SO tiny I have some problems with the hook too... also the one you used are too little for this XD)
the most difficul part for me is to joint the leg in the back >___< I'm having big problems at this!!

    11. I used the large size jewelry hook, 12mm, known as "lobster clasps" technically... ^^ When I tested stringing each leg they held up great! (IE didn't break). Through the little loop at their base I put through thin (about 2mm) galvanized steel wire that is imbedded into his foot (you twist it into some loops so it won't pull out of the sculpey). I think I'll use more of the clasps if I ever make some tiny dolls (like elf-doll sized) ^^.

The joint is indeed annoying! *_* XD (The back leg’s knee, which the joint up by his torso). I made both it and the one below it (ankle) hinge joints instead of ball joints, or esthetic reasons and for stability (I plan to make him stand on all fours and be able to sit like a dog). :D

Good luck on your cat! :D If you want, just eliminate the knee joint and make it solid. I just did it because I'm all crazy and want to make it bend like real life. haha

    12. OOoh, I'd really love to see photos of your cat. I've got a cat in the works as well.

    13. :D Are you going to be casting him in resin?? I would Love LoVe LOVE one!!!

    14. PEENK! = pink.

      With enthusiasm.

      -- A ^-^

    15. haha lol XD thanks!

Yea, his body is mostly this violet color, it looks pink in the flash pick but it's more of a purple in person. He also has dark purple on him, teal, black hair / tailtip / wings, and maybe I'll add yellow-orange stripes or something later. ^^

    16. OMG that is just so neat!! :D Just recently I was trying to figure out in my head how a four legged bjd would work and you did it. He reminds me a bit of those critters for sale at Renaissance Fairs that sit on your shoulder and bob thier heads (and are extremely expensive), only better. I am NOT a sculpter but I am crafty and willing to try anything once. Whoot! Motivation to try making a doll myself (if I ever get around to it  ).

    17. :daisy Awesome idea! One thing I have noticed, looking at you dolls: you may want to consider making the ball part of the joint larger, they always look a tad small to me

Nice work though! Iam sure he's going to look awesome!

    18. thanks a lot for your suggestions!
Thekittybox, I'll post pictures of it when I have some other pieces - I haven't already done the neck

    19. i want this, too...<3 it's SO pretty...i'm so amazed right now, you have no idea

    20. love he is amazing and I love playing with the boy, but...finish him! no excuses, his head staring off your desk frightens me...

*goes to learn to cast resin like a good slave*

    21. Also in progress, I thought it would be cool to show my design sketch for my 24" anthro doll. I stood up the sketch next to Arwen for scale.

She's basically a big Nixie with WAY improved joints. Her legs are also longer overall and her ankle is longer. In the final I will make the arms bigger / longer (The yare a little small in the sketch)

    22. if you need to unstring my girls to learn about joints feel free to ask, i need to sand and restring them anyway....yay! adventures...

found some places that sell deep discounted casting resin...can only find link to one of them...we need to get small samples and practice with a few brands to find what kind is ideal...sometime this winter methinks...

    23. Jacquel was worth the wait :D. What kind of creature does she call herself? A chimera? I almost thought she was a jackelope. And the schema for the wolf-woman was a great bonus. I can't wait to see your entire family together. You are so talented.

      Eppie

    24. In news I was working on Jaquel today and only have 2 pieces of him left! (the 2 lower parts of his right back leg). I then have to cover some more of them in color sculpey, and paint on spots, then glaze them. Still lots to do though because I have to make his ears, tail and wings... *_* waaaa....

Wee thanks! Jaquel is a little boy (Although he doesn't look it unless you look at his underside *laugh* he has a penis sheath bump like on a dog). He is really not any animal in particular. He seems to be a combination of a dog, bunny, bird, and lion. Or something like that... o_O... haha

I'm glad you like my work! I remember you telling me that the only doll your husband ever remembers by name is Arwen :daisy so cute!

HAHA you're right! I did model him with those things in mind... someone noticed! ^_^

Yes I know, It's a terrible habit I'm afraid! It's mostly becasue they are hinge joints, not balls half the time (Hinge joints are more like real limbs). I am making my 24" doll with traditional ball joints like the other BJD's, but for stability reasons Jaquel has hinge joints in his legs. ^^

    25. :o :D  :( :crushed i want

    26. Weee! I finally finished his body! ^^ (I also did some painting around his eyes and nose) All his parts have been made and covered in colored sculpey. He is floppy overall like a puppy ^o^ , but he can hold a lot of cute poses too. His ankle joint isn’t as stable as I would have liked but all the other joints are fine. ^^ He can stand and sit up with a little tweaking (if you flip around his front leg joints they lock). His neck and head are very stable which is good.

Here are some teaser pics I took while testing his posing out…he should be done soon. :D He needs his tail, wings, hair, ears, spots and some of his pieces need glazing.

    31. :o :o :o

      Amazing!

    32. Hes brilliant!!

      His jointing is really impressive!

Aside from that hes just so darned cute!! :chibi and i love the colors you picked for him

    33. OMG, Jaquel is turning out so wonderfully!! His posing is ADORABLE . . . you are so damn creative, woman!!

      *congratulatory squishings*

      -- Andi :D

    34. THAT is one doll that should DEFINITELY be cast in resin and offered for sale. He would be the first of his kind on the market! And I know I'd get one, at least!

    35. :D OHMYGODCANHEBEANYCUTER! I'd buy one
      Fairysquisher

    36. :o That has to be difficult! I'm still in the planning stages for my saluki BJD and I've got yet to even figure out What to make him from!

    37. OMGZ SO CUTE!

    38. That is absolutely amazing! Total Love!

    39. So many nice comments! ^__^ Thanks a lot! He is really cute in person, truly. Wait till you see him with his long ears and "Mullet" (as my friends are calling his black hair mane).

Donn, you even said his jointing was impressive! that means a lot coming from you. I'll have to make sure Ashbet doesn't try to steal him... :| hehe... :daisy

I am working to get him done soon! Sorry for making you all wait...(I got a urge to make a chibi Professor Membrane plushie... XD;) I'll post pics of him all finnished when he is done. :D

    40. Wow, Nessa, he is the cutest thing I have ever seen! i love him!!

    41. Awww! hes so cute! Your really talented! *stalks*

    42. Amazing! I wish I had the creativity and skill to come up with a jointed pet like this. It's just so neat! And the gradient in the clay is also very good, it really takes patience and you've done it beautifully. I can't wait to see the finished product

    43. beautiful!

    44. Awh, I love him! Now make me a blank one so I can paint him up too.

But really, he's great. You're inspiring me to do something with my boring college nights now...

    45. OMG *dies of the cute*

    46. Where are you getting these small S hooks? I've looked in Home Depot and online.

    47. I used lobster clasps with Jaquel (see the first post, I show a pic of one that's on his foot). They come in 12mm and even smaller than that! XD They are great for tiny dolls. I also explain how to imbed them in my first post.

As for small S-hooks...I myself am looking for some small ones....if not I'll just make some with steel wire (they'll be plenty strong if they are small and of proper thickness....)

    48. I glazed all his pieces, added eyelashes, ears, head fur (hair), and his tail! ^^ He's pretty much done... :D All that's left is a pair of little horns to make/glue on.

I was going to make wings but I might not because he looks cute like this :D ....maybe later I might. :?

      Standing on my desk:

Here he is out on the balcony:

*makes shooing motions* Now, git to sculpting Nixie a girlfriend!! *hehehe* (This piece of advice paid for by Nixie)

      **congratulatory hugs**

      -- Andi :D

    54. I want the cute little fuzzy *huggles*

    55. Oo, I so envy you. It's so hard for me to even plan out my doll.. I'm still sketching out her joints and how she'll be strung. Probably have to wire her too... But you're so skilled!! He looks really cute! :chibi I cant wait to see your big doll, you'll have a whole anthropomorph family! hehe

    56. I may have said something similar before...but you, my dear, are brilliant!

    57. Cute! :D :D :D

    58. Thank you all so much! He is a little floppy anf fuzzy baby :D . If I ever make another Quadruped animal BJD to cast and sell I think I'd change a lot of how I did his front legs and some of his back legs (It was all a learning experience indeed! o_o ) but for himself he is just awesome, I love him!

Haha lol! I'm working on it Nixie, yes yes! XD (Is slave to her Sculpey....)

    59. He is awesome! :D I so love him ^^

    60. Great job! I was really looking forward to seeing how he'd turn out, he's absolutely adorable!!
