Aesthetics Pukifee, First BJD Faceup

Apr 8, 2016

    1. Okay, here goes nothing.

One of my friends (@marseille, who laid the paving stones of the dark path to BJDs for me) let me practice faceup and body blushing work on her adorable Pukifee. I admit, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. BUT, I can't let that get in the way of improving.
I already know I needed to clean up a couple of the freckles that didn't come out round enough. Also, the space right above the eyes, below the eyebrows, had been dug out a bit, and was rough. I tried to smooth it some, but I probably should have done more.

I've done a couple other faceups to practice, but they're Monster High (not sure iff I'm allowed to show non-BJD things, but: first girl, and second). There's definitely a big difference in working on vinyl and resin. Resin being way easier. It's got a grippier surface.

    2. As a small amount of background--I got the doll second-hand, she'd been wiped and had a....very amateur....face-up, then I gave her to a friend who tried to face-up her a couple of times, before I gave her to @Twillow to practice on.....

    3. Heyy the images' links are broken >.<

    4. I should know better than to trust picasa at this point. Sorry about that!

    5. Yayyy I'm really glad to see the images! I really really like the freckles! In my opinion, if freckles look too round they don't seem real, so I wouldn't try to make them "perfect". I like them the way you did them. I even saw a technique on youtube where they used a big brush with paint on it (not too wet, not too dry) to make some splashes. I used a toothbrush and it worked too. The small spots really looked like freckles, because they were not perfect or follow a pattern.

About the body blush, I wouldn't change anything, I really like how you did it.

On the other hand, I would try something different for the face up. I don't know if it's because the photos are close ups (where every little mistake is magnified lol), or you can see it without a magnifying glass, but I think the eyebrows, eyelashes and the small lines on the lips would look a bit better if they were thinner. I think I would try to sharpen an awful lot the pencil colour, and wouldn't let it lose its sharp end. It may take more time, because every hair would be as thin as a real hair, and maybe sealand should be used one or two times before finishing with all the hairs, but it's totally worth it :)

Here's the video I mentioned, if you're interested:

    6. Thank you for the critique! I have always loved freckles... it's going to be hard to resist the urge to do freckles on all my faceups. I tried the paintbrush splatter effect a long time ago on something else and had disappointing results. I think I'll have to revisit it.

I could perhaps do the eyelashes with a thin paintbrush too, to get a really smooth effect. If I can get my hand steady enough. Though if it gets too smooth, it might not mesh with the more "natural" pencil freckles and pastel blush effects?

I also think I need to do a bit more sealing; I've already got chips in the body blushing and now I'm noticing stray lines where I must have miss-penciled. I understand that some body blush chipping is inevitable, especially where the joints rub.

    7. The eyebrows and eyelashes need work, but otherwise it's decent. You won't get it completely right the first time, anyway. Plus, I've made the exact same eyebrow and eyelash mistakes on my own DIY faceups, so at least I understand.

    8. First I'd tell you to take some more pics outside because half of the face is in shade.

The eyebrows are a bit too round and low, but pukifee have such a cartoonish kind of face that it doesn't look too bad.
And based on the redhead+freckles theme you chose those purple lips look off, I think you should use a warm shade.

    9. I actually really like the eyelashes :) but a damp thin paintbrush would fix the slight grainy look if you used water color pencils. honestly, for a first attempt it looks great. Close up pictures can be so unforgiving, anyway. If it were my doll, I'd slap a wig on her and call her good. Face-ups, like any other skill take practice. I found working on larger heads helped me, maybe you'll find them a little easier :)

    10. For a very first bjd faceup, you have a really good grasp of whats needed (ie, face blush is in a good area, lips are done with a lot of consideration, good job!). In addition, my suggestion would be a bit of blush on the top of the head (forehead area), and maybe a slightly more delicate color to blush with (unless you want intense rosy cheeks to match a wig or some similar concept). Also, maybe try to "blush" the eyebrows in first with a brush and pastels, to get a basic outline, and then use only a few lines of watercolor pencil to detail the brows and a white pencil to high light. Overall, again, it looks awesome for a first try! More practice will only make it look even better!

    11. Thanks for all of your responses, everyone :) I'm planning to redo this one's faceup soon (I smudged her cheek with pen anyway; I'm such a klutz).

It sounds like the main critique is with the eyebrows and lashes. I'll try blushing them in and going lighter and finer with the pencils, or attempt to use a fine brush. Possibly a different color with the lips. I'll report back with the next iteration :)
