Modification Project Vinne Vergora: A DnD tiefling

Jan 20, 2024

    1. This will be the biggest project ive ever taken on. The goal? Turn a Ringdoll Ashford into a Tiefling. Specifically My Tiefling, Vinne. I thought i did a pretty good job with picking the sculpt to shell him.
      [IMG] [IMG]

Dying will be a important part of this project, but im a little timid to do it so other steps will be done before i dye him.

      Plans:

      Eyes.
Because i dont want to go just normal gold eyes and i want that solid look, im gonna have to make them myself. This will be the easiest of all the steps as i have experience with eyes and the molds to do them.

      Horns
Still a easy step, but way more time consuming. I dont want his horns to be fragile so itll require sculpting, molding, and then casting in a more durable medium than clay.

      Wig
I already have the wig, and it fits. Styling will be the main part with the wig, though other than a few strands and braiding it wont be hard at all.

      Tail
This will take some time. Ive got to sculpt either a jointed tail or do some armature wire and cloth for the tail. If i decide to go jointed itll be the same material as the horns. Being able to pose the tail as well is very important to me. Attaching the tail can be done multiple ways, though im leaning away from anything permanent. Other than the horns and dye, i dont want to alter the doll itself too much.

      Clothes
Ill have to hand sew his jacket and pants. He also has bandages covering a tattoo that ill have to wrap. I have good experience with hand sewing and making cosplays so this shouldnt cause me too much trouble.

      Dye
The thing im dreading. I bought him in white for the easiest dye results but ive got to match a brown-red hue. Too brown or too red just will not do.

      ECT
Tattoos will be painted on, any accessories will be sculpted and maybe molded depending on how durable i need or want them. Im debating making new hands for him, just for photos, so that he can hold his lute and/or sword. I dont feel like buying a new hand, and i have the sculpting skills to make it so why not try.

Wish me luck on this project, because its gonna be a long one!! Updates as pieces get done and/or give me problems lol. Tips are welcome, just keep in mind i live rurally and access to some materials are limited.

    2. This sounds very interesting! I'm playing a Tiefling myself, so I love to see a bjd one!
I'm curious to see how you want to attach the horns. I have horns for my doll, but I attached them with magnets on the wig, not the doll itself. It doesn't seem to be possible according to your drawing.
Be sure to keep us updated!

    3. Oh that's an excellent sculpt for a tief!
For dye, I found the Rit dyemore formulas they have on their website a handy starting point. You'll want to check how they look on different screens, but I found the pictures of them to be fairly accurate, though I'd suggest starting with something like 45 second to a minute since you can always overdye something if it turns out too light or the shade's not quite right, as opposed to going for too long and needing to strip the dye and start over. Make sure to use a stainless steel pot, since it's a non-reactive metal and won't do anything funky to the dye chemicals!

    4. Good luck with your project! :cheer I'd love to hear about your experiences with the dye when you make that step! I'm also planning on shelling an OC which will require dye. It sounds so scary!

Will you be using Rit dye? I've been looking at the colours and there seems to be quite a bit of information regarding mixing.

      https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/tender-rose/

      Rust Brown — Rit Dye

These two colours look pretty similar to what you are looking for and it seems that they both use the same base colours to mix, only the amounts differ. The challenge would be finding just the right mix if these two examples aren't quite what you need, but it might be a starting point :chibi

EDIT: @quilleth beat me to it :XD:

    5. I love tieflings (and cambions! I have a bunch of cambion npcs written up for a future campaign!) so I’m really excited to see what you do with your boy. I think you chose a really nice sculpt to dye! I’ve never tried dyeing ringdoll resin, but I have a lot of practice with Dye, so if you have any questions feel free to message!!

    8. I'm in the process of shelling my dnd character from my last campaign that's part teifling too and I’m similarly struggling with figuring out what the tail situation will be with her so good luck :)

    9. For the tail, I used a snake BJD 3d printing file I purchased from cults3d for my tailed character's reptilian tail, but if you want a smooth tail you can always use cosclay! It stays flexible and bendable after baking. Just embed a wire inside it, sculpt it to the length and thickness you want, and you're good to go. Cosclay is also very strong and doesn't break easily, even if you drop it. You can use magnets attached to the clothes or in a belt around the doll if you don't want it to be permanent.

I love fantasy doll mods, will be following along!

    10. Alright! So the weather hasn't been very good where i live, so eyes and such are taking longer to cure than id like. But you know what i can control? HOW HOT THE POT IS BABYEEEE!!

Vinnie has Officially been dyed and let me tell you, the excitement and fear were a rush. I highly recommend giving it a try if you're thinking about it. On to the process.

I gave him a little bath after un stringing him and let me just say i will ask next time for my doll to come unstrung from ringdoll. i had SO many difficulties unstringing him. He was TIGHT, and instead of an S hook theres a closed chain-like link. It was impossible to open it so i had to start with the hands and feet. When i finally did get the string out i had to cut it because the knot was so tight. He also had wires in his legs and arms for posing, which is nice and all but not something i wanted to find out while using all my strength to get the feet off. That being said, before i unstrug him he posed very well.

After that fiasco i gave him a little bath and discovered that my dye pot was just BARELY able to fit his calves. OOPS.
but here he is, laid out and sopping wet for your enjoyment.

      WOW!
Warning for coming up, the piece i chose to test the dye is....unmentionable. Doll parts inbound!

With a gallon of water and in total i believe it came out to 3 1/2 CAPS of chocolate brown, and 2 1/2 CAPS of royal purple.
I had seen that the chocolate brown had a very serious red hue to it, but on further looking i noticed that Vinnies skin was more...Purple than red. So thats why i got the royal purple.
(A special Thanks to Saphira for doing a journal with the chocolate brown Ritdye, as i couldnt for the life of me find coco brown.)

The first test was 15 seconds and the results were...too human colored. (Also just so happened the only metal i could find to stick to the magnet was a screw. How ironic)

Another few seconds and it was much more what i wanted
      [IMG]
It IS purple mind you. monitor screens and photos are deceiving.

So the golden time for me ended up being 35 seconds. Almost all were dipped for that amount of time.

There were some very noticeable problems right off the bat. I assume there are sanding marks that were not visible until the dye was already on them.
The fear in my heart when i saw this was Immeasurable. I was SO terrified to do the head because what if the face had all these marks? The fear gripped me and so i did the head last.

But he came out absolutely PERFECT. Not a splotch or mark on him.

I was SO pleased with how he turned out. So to end this particular post, Here are the things that went wrong.

Whoops this is my bad! This is one of the calves pieces, so there wasnt much room for swishing around. You can also see where i kicked up some dye that had solidified? and got laid over the piece. Not a big deal, as he wears full length pants and shoes anyways.

There were also some of those same sanding marks on the forearms, which was really disappointing but he IS a bard/fighter so ill likely turn them into scars or keep them as they are for strechmarks since thats what it looks like.

This however is NOT my fault.
The little gray/black dots starting showing up on a very few pieces.
I can only assume they're just from the sculpting process since i REALLY scrubbed and washed him before dying to ensure there was no residue on him. Ill likely turn them into freckles, so congrats on your new freckles, Vinnie.

And last but not least is this part of the foot. Both feet have this little defect, but as its on the joint i dont think itll be noticeable even when barefoot.
(Also yes, those are my natural nails, No, i dont know how i managed to grow them or keep them this long)

All in ALL im VERY happy with how the dying went, even with the few mishaps i had. For others Reference, and because i know its annoying to scroll back up to find info:
Ritdye 3 1/2 Caps of Chocolate brown, 2 1/2 Caps of Royal purple, 35 seconds.
Chocolate brown has a red hue, and purple is...well purple.
He is more purple than the photos seem but it matched my swatch pretty well. I would describe this color as Bloated and Dead because its the same color. Its Non-human unless ya know. Youve been dead awhile and all oxygen has left your tissues.

More updates as the rest of it gets done!

    12. He came out amazing! I love the color you achieved. Dyeing a doll is a really nerve-wracking process, so congrats on taking the plunge! I also love the idea of using the small dyeing errors as skin details like stretchmarks/scars, that's so clever!

I'm so happy that my project journal was helpful in some capacity. :) The chocolate brown RIT does have a super red hue! I ended up going back in with some green later on my doll to correct that redness. You did a great job working with it to get the color you wanted!

Also, your photos of using the doll er...part for color testing cracked me up!
