Hello! So after maybe five years I thought it was finally time to attempt sculpting a head again. My first attempt was with Super Sculpey but I couldn't get on with the constant cracking and lack of malleability so I shelved it. This time I'm using Ladoll paper clay and DAMN is it so much easier. I was originally trying to sculpt my OC Sol but the ball went a complete different direction and I'm just kinda winging it now haha. So now this head is just called prototype 'S1'. Tbh I've just been winging it from the start. I literally just balled up a bunch of paper towels and encased it with a layer of clay. Such finesse. My spray bottle has been my number 1 tool tbh. MOISTEN EVERYTHING. Still figuring out how I want the head cap to be like... I'm going for the faceplate style. ot: I accidentally smashed one of my glass eyes onto the floor ;; But luckily the important part was still intact so I shoved a bit of clay onto it. Good as new. The two head parts after a quick sanding. Still a lot of work to be done. The entire face looks like it's angled weirdly, ideally the profile a little further back urg. Basically I need to build up the forehead and cranium and fix the eyes. Also the nose is still slightly too high and apart from the mouth. I also plan to give him some teeth. Mostly I'm really chuffed with how the faceplate stays onto the headback, woop!
Thats a great start IMO! Making a well defined headcap/inside makes your job of defining whats irregular much easier later on My one advide for the face is maybe check the proportions for the spacing. The eyes are very close together, and the nose/mouth have a very wide separation. Depends on what you're going for! Eyelids help defining the eyes a lot as well. Keep at it man
@Sleep of Reason Thank you for the cc! ^w^ Yeah the eyes are giving me trouble atm, I can't decide whether to give him serious eyes or bigger neutral ones hhhmm... The philtrum area is also annoying since I think it looks fine on the profile but its so far apart head on haha. I think I'll have to pad out the septum and nostrils or something Thanks again and you too! Your Faraji looks so damn cool right now /sob
NP! It's ok to take your time. If you're not feeling secure enough to jump straight into the face, try practicing with the ladoll on separate pieces? (i believe its the same as the other paperclay I've worked with b4 and it can be reused?) Reference also helps a ton when in doubt -u-b Thank you! Take care
Proportion and symmetry come from time and sanding. That mouth you have already made, however, that is magic and talent.
Update~ I'm back in England and finally had time to continue this little project! I've purchased some cheapish air drying clay called DAS and it's pretty good so far. Just has a lot of fibre! I realised I made the head too big so I've bunged him in the oven at the moment in hopes he'll shrink somewhat...>.< I still haven't decided on his eyeshape... I started to make a body too which will be modelled after my character, Armi, who has an average build and a bit of belly flab. Aside from the Luts Delf I don't think I've come across many average sized mature SD boy bodies! The body is currently scaled too small so I'm bulking him up and those random parts are the beginnings of the butt and crotch :P I had a lot of hardened sculpey fragments and I needed a hard base, so no need to waste ey!
New update! I got out my primer spray, worked on everything a bit more and made a little hand out of sculpey. Gah, the head is still too big but I'm planning to put aside the body and build a new more realistic head for it later to match my actual character. For now, this current head will just be a standalone head who still needs a name... I need to fill out the back of his skull and define his lips a bit more. I still need to decide on his eyes! I know I want him to fit 12-14mm eyes.
@Glyndon Aww it's always sad when a company shuts The name rang a bell and it seems they were popular before I was active in the community. They had very lovely sculpts!
He's so amazing! The expression on his face has so much character. Like he's thoughtfully analyzing something.
@Lillith @Higgy Sorry for the late reply but thank you for the wonderful comments! ^^ So I've decided to name him 先 (Sin in Cantonese jyutping) which means 'first' seeing as he will be my very first completed project. :P I haven't done much since the last update tbh. But I've decided to give him removable teeth parts but in hollowing out the mouth I've ruined his original lip shape... But the head is nearly at the final stages! Just need more sanding and small refinements. And then to restore his lips and make the teeth and tongue parts.. 131116 by princeyiu, on Flickr 131116 by princeyiu, on Flickr
