Too excited for this! I used to love going to the renaissance festival when I was younger, but haven't been able to go in years, and this is the perfect theme for most of my dollies. It was quite a fight to decide who to enter, but Diana prevailed. :)

    30. I have a question: is this strictly Medieval period, or can we expand more into the Renaissance era?

It's just that the wording of "Welcome to Camelot, the largest Renaissance Fair in North America! To attend the fair you must dress appropriately in mediaeval attire" are giving me mixed information since Medieval and Renaissance are very distinct and different time periods that have very varied styles (and I'm kinda sorta leaning more towards Renaissance styling for this challenge).
      (Sorry :sweat ).

    31. I was thinking the same thing, since the traditional romantisized version of Camelot is around 12th century, though some say much earlier than that before the 9th century . Renaissance is 16th century. Would be great to clarify. Although being a traditional "Ren Faire" most costumes I see at them aren't traditional. like chain maille bikinis and such..lol

    32. Great question! It is a Renaissance theme. The choice of Camelot in the name of the challenge was misleading. We're sorry for the confusion! Some latitude in the interpretation of 'Renaissance' will be given. I just hope we don't see any chainmaille bikinis! LOL!

    34. Thanks for the clarification! I started sewing yesterday and am going with 16th century.

I am reserving this post for WIP pictures and such, which I will start posting today :)

Edit: I've had a sewing marathon yesterday and today. Her chemise is finished, and I am working on a side-lacing kirtle. It is going to have detachable sleeves to match the overdress. Here are some inspiration pictures:

Here is her chemise. I made it using rectangles and triangles, attempting to replicate some of the pattern techniques of the Renaissance. I found out that they used to turn raw fabric edges twice before sewing, but I used Fray Check instead to keep bulk down on the doll.

I ended up taking in the shoulder seams so that it would come up higher on her chest and be visible when she is wearing her kirtle. She also got a new faceup.

Here are some new WIP photos. I forgot to get pictures of only the green kirtle, so I'll have to go back and do that later. I still need to do the shoulder seams on the overdress, hook-and-eye closures for the overdress, trim for both overdress and kirtle, removable sleeves, head piece, and slippers. Depending on time, I might make a belt pouch as well. I won't be able to get any work done this coming week, so I will have to work fast after that!

    38. I have finished one of the three main pieces for my girl who is a peasant. So far I made her a chainse out of some linen I aged a while ago with tea. Next I will make her a cyclas and an apron. The cyclas I have to age a bit yet as the fabric would look too "new" for a peasant. Especially one who can't afford fabric to make new clothes all the time lol.

    39. I've finished a cotta and a belt for my pretty.

Also I begun an embroidery on a surcoat yesterday. Hope to finish it on weekends.

      Upd. 24.07.13:
After a short rest with snorkeling ;) I returned to my pretty and her image. I've finished a surcoat and a cloak. I'll show only details.

First, I bought "bronze" mushroom buttons but they were too big for buttonholes that I made. I had to use "bronze" beads instead buttons. Beads look nice as buttons as I think. And what do you think?

      I've finished the surcoat's hem.

I sewed the surcoat with a white thin cotton lining by hand. I made eyelets by hand too and wove a cord. In the picture below you can see the cotta's belt as well.

And I sewed the cloak. I've used pair of hairpins as a fastener.

Small secret of my thief ;) In a book about "Medieval Costume in England and France" (by Mary G. Houston) I saw that peasants tucked their cotta's hem and used the hem as pockets! I think this is great idea for my thief. And now she has tucked hem on her cotta with pockets. It is very convenient for a thief, isn't it?

    42. I have finished sewing. Now I have to age the fabrics a bit to make her look more like a peasant. I plan to add little dirt spots by rubbing instant coffee grounds onto the fabric. I did some tests over the weekend with scraps and it turned out pretty nice.

    44. I'm hoping to get something done this weekend. Since I signed up, Wiishu has gotten a local gig for a convention that might eat up all sewing time. :( Vanye was just gifted with a rapier, so the initial thought of Medieval might be morphed into Ren....which reminds me. Gotta go check the answer to the question of Ren being legit. Since the actual unification of England that Camelot represents took place long before Medieval times, it would seem legit, but OTOH....Camelot to me means Julie Andrews and Richard Burton and Robert Goulet. Not sure I can buck my own mindset that much! Sigh.... I've got to get Vanye a proper longsword...

    45. Zardi ,
Thanks! I like to see how you sew to your baby girl too.

elfmoon, I was out of Singapore for a week that's why I didn't show any pictures.

      I've updated my earlier post.

    47. This is looking wonderful! I have my fabrics and have started drafting the patterns. I probably should ask before going any further: is a Musketeer OK? It's tail end of the Renaissance era...but I sure see them at RenFaires.

    48. Musketeer's were included in the New Jersey Ren Fair of 2012. So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us! lol!

    50. What a wonderful idea this project Camelot is ! I love medievals so much ! I wish I could participate (waiting for 1st doll to arrive in fall). I hope you'll do it again in the future. SiliEl, I like the surcoat, both original and lovely :aheartbea !

I dunno if it interest anyone to know, but in French, that type of surcoat was named ''Portes d'enfer'' (i.e. : Hell doors) by the Church, because they reveal the lady's hips from the undergown. Maybe women wore it in defiance back then ? Who knows...

    52. Well I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend..trying not to use the extension..lol. I think I'm going to stick with my original plans and go with a 16th century look. Still need to dig through those fabrics...eek

    54. Whew! Thanks, elfmoon!

I'd better get an extension, too. I haven't even begun to cut things out. I've drafted the pattern, but I've never sewn anything except a pair of pants and a robe for him so have no idea how fitting is going to work out. I may have something and I may not. Or I might just post the poor lad in some truly ill-fitting garb and call him d'Artagnan! :D :D :D

    60. Sigh...finally got to work and the one thing I can say...I could work on this 24/7 until the end of the extension and what I WANT to do ain't gonna get done. But at least my lad won't be walking the runway nekkid. If it works out, however, I might have a nifty way of creating doll-specific shoe patterns...The cloth trial one worked great. Keeping fingers crossed for the leather version. My "dead simple shirt" is turning into a nightmare, my pants fit beautifully...until I put the waistband on. And I haven't even done a mockup of the coat pattern. Maybe he can just wear pants and the king's Musketeer tunic! :D We're talkin' Ren Faire, afterall. (ahem...) Okay...back to the machine.
