THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT CHALLENGE ~GAME 14

      CONCEPT:

It’s a cold, dark, stormy night. The wind is howling outside your house as you huddle in front of the fireplace seeking warmth and comfort.Long, barren tree branches scrape the window and you swear you can hear something scratching at the door! Erie shadows flicker around the room and you catch glimpses of something you can’t quite identify. A dark, shapeless, sinister mass materializes out of thin air and then vanishes as quickly as it appeared. Whispers seem to echo from dark corners of the room. The hair on your arms stands up, your heartbeat quickens as icy fingers dance up and down your spine, and your legs grow weak. You try to scream, but you are paralyzed with fear! You are all alone and something is watching you!

In honor of Halloween, take your inspiration from the following Scottish payer.

      FROM GHOUGLIES AND GHOSTIES
      AND LONG LEGGED BEASTIES
AND THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT,
      LORD DELIVER US!

      CHALLENGE:
Design a costume that reflects your interpretation of the above payer.

      RULES:
The spending limit for games is $25.00. This includes fabric and all supplies, except thread. For countries other than the US, spend the equivalent currency. The use of commercial patterns is prohibited. my idea was of a parasite that invades your body, takes it over then mutates you from the inside out. the idea came from the 'long legged beasties' part of the poem. i thought of AT-ATs from Star Wars and Land Striders from Dark Crystal and how much they used to scare me when i was little :still kinda do: :sweat

My character: Headless "Horse"man...lol..my idea from the poem was the line things that go bump in the night. That sound that you think you here just outside the door or maybe peering in your window.

Basically his story is this. Once a highwayman and beheaded for treason, he tried to make a deal with death to restore his life for love. Death agreed but made him into man nor beast with the face of death itself. Highwayman went to find his love, but what he brought was death to her. Now he is bound to the grim reaper to haunt the lands of all times until one day his love returns. Each night he goes to the house she once lived and each night those that are living there hear strange footsteps outside their door.

      The Mummy Walks

There have been countless really scary books and movies featuring mummies arisen from the dead to walk again among us. I decided on an Egyptian royal mummy; I took my inspiration from King Tutankhamun's burial treasure, particularly the gold and lapis lazuli headdress and the solid gold sandals that the mummy wore.

My version of the headdress is polyester silk fabric in dark blue and pale gold, but it's hard to get true color in my photos (which, as usual, totally suck in all respects, but I tried my damnedest, I swear). My version of the sandals is faux gold, of course, and I added a heel made from a tripod of skulls to accommodate my Madoka's high-heel feet. The corset, neckpiece, bracelets and sandals were all made out of suede from a coat that I salvaged for future repurposing years ago and it's come in handy quite a few times. The gold items were decorated or covered with liquid gold leaf. The mummy-wrapped bodysuit and arm warmers are tea- and coffee-dyed gauze bandage rolls. The skirt was made from boning material, satin ribbon and gauze bandage. The skirt, corset ties and sandal heels have chalk turquoise skull beads from China that I found for $7 on Etsy. The eyes in the last photo are from Ersa Flora.

My girl is beautiful as well as royal, but she is also powerful and deadly. Very definitely not something you want to bump into in the dark!

My doll Mookie is the hippie on the left, though he and Kiko (the scary pumpkin) could pass for twins.

      Description of character:
It is time for little Timmy to go to bed.
      Mom: "Timmy, time for bed".
Timmy: "I can't Mom. I'm afraid of the monster that lives in my closet".
Mom: "Don't be silly, Timmy. There are no such things as monsters".
Timmy: "But, Mom. I have seen him many times. He is green and lizard-y looking with horns and beady red eyes and big pointy teeth. I think he wants to eat me".
Mom: "Timmy, I said go to bed".
Timmy: "I told you I'm scared".
Dad: (getting angry) "Timmy, I have heard enough about monsters. Monsters do not exist. NOW GO TO BED".
Timmy: "You don't care about me. If all you find are my bones tomorrow morning, you will know why".
Timmy reluctantly goes upstairs to his bedroom and closes the door.
The closet door slowly creaks open.
Mookie monster: "See, kid. I told you they wouldnt believe you".

      :

Migma is a vengeful spirit. Spurned by her unfaithful lover on the eve of their wedding she died of a broken heart. She is now an undead vampire that rises at Halloween and tempts unfaithful men to their deaths.

She is wearing a clay corset with a heart emblazoned upon it which was part of her tombstone. In her hair she wears 2 clips with the tattered remains of her wedding veil with black roses at the centre to symbolise her dead heart. Her skirt and bustle are emblazoned with webs and spiders.

Still confused about the whereabouts, but I think he is the son of the Black Widow and The Dead. His name is unknown, he is a nameless wandering spirit. He collects blood, and makes himself pearls of it.

    14. ok, I have stupid question (surprise, surprise). When it says "your interpretation", does that mean we have to 'invent' the character/interpretation or can it be an existing character (such as Mortisha Adams, or Chucky or something). Just wanted to make sure my idea is within rules :)

    15. There are no rules as to how you interpret the prayer. It's left wide open as to what it means to you. My 'take' on the theme is that it should be something scary as opposed to cute or harmles, but that's just how I interpret it.

      That's all I can say!

Here is my entry. As far as the theme goes I'm picturing her as the wandering spirit of a bride who died as a result of being separated from the person she was supposed to marry. I imagine she would come back wearing the shredded remains of her wedding outfit each year to try to find said person and mistakenly lure many a young man to his doom in the process*cue spooky music and thunder*

The idea for my entry is a fashion take on the archtypical "White Lady" ghost. Many towns have their own ghost stories about a lady in white. Sometimes she's a bride, a widow, a mother, but always a sad and tragic specter. The high collar is meant to add a bit of an old-fashioned flair. The gauzy fabric of her cape and the sheer material of the skirt, gloves and collar are meant to reference a burial shroud. The gathers in the gloves are also meant to be indicative of funeral wrappings. The ribbons draping her skirt are symbolic of the ties binding her to the world of the living. The satin lining in the hood is a nod to a satin casket pillow. Finally, she has a lantern (the required accessory made for this challenge) to help her light her way to the afterlife or find the person she is eternally mourning.

    28. PLEASE READ!

This post is a response to a question I received in a PM.

The question was if the cost of props is part of the $25 spending limit.

Props can be purchased, unless the challenge states they are to be handmade, which doesn't happen very often. Accessories must be made by hand unless otherwise stated in the challenge. Any item that is handmade is part of the $25 spending limit if it is a required part of the challenge.

Accessories that are normally worn with garments, such as belts, shoes, socks, and nylons can be purchased and are not included in the spending limit.

Any prop that is not a required part of the challenge, whether purchased or hand made, is not included in the spending limit.

      Does this make sense?

    29. Another please read!

The judges have asked that when designers post their completed costumes, that they state what kind of 'monster' their costume represents. In other words, if you have created a ghost, please state that in your post.

      Thanks!

The top row is two sheers, one black the other grey. They turned out to be a bit of a problem - they melt even with a press cloth! After a bit of experimentation and an acceptable loss of fabric I managed to get it to sort-of press.
Bottom left is the main material for the robe. A nice cheap polyester that doesn't fray well. That's good because the ghoulies I know don't do hems.
The mesh was another unexpected bit of work. Yes, it frays nicely to give a great fringe. But it doesn't want to stop! When trying to form strands from the fringe I often grabbed the wrong thread and wound up making the fringe longer.
Again, my choice of pattern is simple. A basic A-line flaired from the hip. Loose sleeves without flair. Ghoulies aren't fashion divas either.

On to the technique used to create the edges.
I needed a worn, tattered look and straight cut edges just didn't do it. So, out came my trusty 'floofer'. Pet owners will recognize this as a pet groomer. My cats love it, and it works great on doll wigs too. I now have several since this one is now part of my sewing tools.
I used two identical scrap pieces here to show how much it eats off the material. Every now and then it got a bit hungry and took a big bite but that just added to the look I wanted.

I'm going to be quite busy for the next few weeks so I have posted my entry pictures.

    31. A tip for making fringe. Decide how long you want the fringe to be, say an inch. Sew a line of stitching an inch above the raw edge of your fabric. Pull the treads. When the unraveled fabric hits the stitching line it will stop, that way you'll have even fringe the length you want it.

    32. @elfmoon - I usually do but this is so loose and open you can't stitch it without it showing. Plus it would ruin the effect of the edge, it's supposed to look decayed. Anyway, I anticipated this happening so had made the piece larger than I needed so it finished the correct size.

    36. I have all my patterns made and I've begun collecting fabric. Does anyone know the best place to get a small amount of that black, loose gauze, Halloween fabric for a low price?

    37. Have you tried a dollar store? They should be getting Halloween stuff in. The gauze may be attached to some sort of decoration, but you could cut if off and use it.

    41. I second elfmoon for $1 store or any thrift store, they have Halloween costumes now.

My progress is slow, as always. But, good thing I went to check on the fabric I intended to use - I don't have nearly as much as I thought I did, which means I either have to improvise or search for the same/similar fabric LOL
My plan was to work on it over the long weekend, but family gatherings (Canadian Thanks Giving) and dinners got in the way... But I do know what I want to make so that is a big step to my usual "go-with-the-flow" plan :)

    43. I just did a quick buy for the rest of the costume fabric (I think it should be enough, these EID and Idelean guys are taking up waay too much fabric LOL).

I don't have any sketches as I am not so talented, but I know what I want to do so the plan is to start sewing tomorrow. If everything goes well, I might post some progress photos :)

    49. ACK !! Where did the month go? Plan A didn't work out, nor did Plan B. I think I am now on Plan F or G. It is so gosh darned hard to make Mookie's cuteness into scary. I am afraid he will end up looking like a teddy bear.

whoops scratch that I see Ladyfeather has already posted their fabulous costume..mine won't be that scary, but I like what I've done. :)
