Project Runway ~ the Under the Big Top Challenge ~ Game 13 ~ WINNERS POSTED!

Jul 18, 2012

    1. [IMG]

      THE UNDER THE BIG TOP CHALLENGE – Game 13

      CONCEPT:

      Has your doll, or you, ever wanted to run away and join the circus? Well, here’s your chance! Have you ever longed for the bright lights, the cheering crowds, the excitement and danger of being a circus performer? The ‘greatest show on Earth’ is coming to town and the owner is auditioning new acts to join his circus family. If you have talent, it could be you!

      CHALLENGE:
      Design a costume that would be worn by a circus performer. Since there are rarely any traditional costumes, you’re free to use your imagination, and the possibilities are limitless! The outfits are usually very colorful, sparkly and attention getting, while also be practical for the act performed.

      RULES:
      Please read these rules carefully as they are a bit different from our other challenges.
      You must include at least one accessory or prop.
      Accessories are items not normally worn, such as hats, scarves, gloves, leggings, belts, etc.
      Shoes, socks, stockings and tights are not considered accessories and may be purchased.
      For this challenge we are allowing the use of props that are associated with the circus act performed. They include canes, whips, hoops, torches, weapons, parasols,etc.
      You may choose either one accessory OR one prop. Of course you are free to choose as many as you like. All accessories and props must be made by you. You must tell us what type of circus act your costume represents. If you have any toy animals that relate to your circus act, we encourage you to include them in your glamour photo.

      List of common circus acts:
      Ring master, clowns, acrobats, animal tamers (big cats,bears, etc.), animal trainers (elephants, horses, dogs, etc.) trapeze acts,musicians, hula hoopers, tightrope walkers, jugglers, unicyclists, gymnasts(tumbling/trampoline), magicians, aerialists (performers who do various maneuvers while clinging to a suspended rope), equestrians (trick riders),knife throwers, archery acts, fire eaters, sword swallowers, etc. Your act does not have to be on this list as long as it’s associated with a circus.

      JUDGING:
      Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
      Entries can be posted any time between now and Aug 1[SUP]st[/SUP].
      The deadline for posting entries is Aug 1[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.
      The game will begin on Aug 1[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST
      The game will end on Aug 31st at 11:59 PM, PST.
      48 hour extensions will be from Aug 31[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST until Sept 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]at 11:59 PM, PST.
      Winners will be posted on or about Sept 14[SUP]th[/SUP].

      PHOTOS:
      Your entry must contain 5 photos: full length photo of front, full length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages) and glamour photo that may include props. We would prefer that the glamour photo show a full length view of your costume with your doll standing up. The photo should show case your costume to its best advantage. These photos must be in your entry, not in a separate post.Design concepts and progress photos can be in a separate post. Photos are not judged, but please make sure they are clear and taken in good lightening.

      Due to the problem we’re having with posting the winning photos, allphotos must be 480 x 640. That way all entry photos will be uniform in size.
      PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE!

      Presenting: Hortense Hathaway-Tightrope Walker
      Wearing a brighly colored costume perfect for her performance at the Psychedelic Circus. Accessories including lace ruffled choker, furry leg warmers that are UV reactive, a polka dot blindfold to make her act even more daring, and matching psychedelic patterened gloves. Her costume consist of a rainbow romper, tutu and contrasting corset. When the lights go down she'll be glowing in the night, juggling glow stick rings on a thin wire high above the ground under the big top of the Psychedelic Circus!

      Grannybelle may be tiny but she has the will and fortitude to train wild Dragons for her animal taming act. She has trained them to do tricks like rolling on top of a ball, flying throughout the arena, jumping onto prop boxes and breathing fire on command...and for her grand finale, she has them jump through diminishing circumferences of hoops by magically shrinking them down to the appropriate size for each one. (This always brings the house down!):) She controls and directs them by using a parasol instead of a whip...no fairy would ever be ignorant enough to try to use a whip on a dragon!!!;) (As a side note, the tiny art applique is actually printed on cotton and is washable.)

      SUBMISSON
      Finally! I am not sure if I am still under the time, but here it is. As much as I loved doing this challenge I am glad it is over - took forever, and even with an earlier than usual start, I am still doing a last minute submission <.<

      As for the costume, my inspiration was a bit of vintage, a bit of "me". I just did what I like, and this is what came out. Everything was made by me except for the boots and the material, of course. And, one of the straps ripped yesterday, which just made me super angry but didn't have the energy or the will to re-sew the darn thing T_T

      I just thought about that because I am not the worlds best sewer.

    9. You can withdraw from the challenge at any time, but you need to announce that you're dropping out by posting your intention in this thread. Please don't join and then just disappear!

      You can't change your model doll once the game has started, but you can before then.

      For this challenge if you start to make a costume and it doesn't work for you, you can submit another costume, but you need to change the name of your act in your original post. In other words, if you chose Ring Master as your costume and submit a clown outfit, you would need to change the name of your act in your entry post.

    11. elfmoon, I have couple of questions >.<
      1. Can the photos be horizontal or do they have to be vertical (i.e. can the the width be 640 and height 480)?
      2. The rules state one accessory or one prop, but can we have both or multiples of one or the other? I know I am getting waay too ambitious already, just wanted to make sure I know which direction to take :sweat

      I'm stuck between Lion Tamer and Harlequin... l'd love to do either one costume... grrr

      Gail4c, what a beautiful Ashanti!!

    12. I really don't know much about taking photos, as you can tell from the pictures I take, so I'll have to ask the ribbon lady if she's able to add ribbons to horizontal photos, and I'll post her answer.

      As for accessories and props, you can use as many as you'd like, but they have to be make by you. If you go with Lion Tamer and you have any toy lions, we'd love to see them in your glamour shot!

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Here's Bailey as Milo le Mangeur de Incendie
      The idea was a traveling Airship Circus from France. The outfit is a steampunk version of your fire eater/breather. He has a jar of flammable liquid strapped to his arm holster, and the tube runs down to the ignitor on his gauntlet (kind of like a lighter). The fire sticks are chenille pipe cleaners, wrapped in electrical tape and soft wire. He's rockin' jodhpurs, military spats, holster for his fire sticks, and a vest like shirt w/o buttons to show the muscles. ;) He has shoulder armor on the arm that holds the fire sticks (so he doesn't injur his arm lighting the fire sticks)
    23. HoushiChan ~ No, Hon, you can't enter just for fun. The games are for serious designers who want to compete in a challenge.
      You are more than welcome to enter, regardless of your sewing skill! Your costume would be judged along with the other designers. It would give you an opportunity to improve your skill and perhaps boost your confidence.
      If you're forced to withdraw because of school, you can do so, but please let us know you're withdrawing by posting your intention is this thread. Please don't just disappear.
      We always hope that our contestants are serious about completing the challenges and have a commitment to the games, but we understand that at times circumstances arise that are beyond anyone's control.
      If you want to enter please let me know and I'll add your name to the designers list.
      Thank you for understanding.
      The Marvelous Mookie is a lion tamer extroadinaire who combines PukiPuki charm, gentle persuasion and a touch of Dr. Doolittle to soothe the savage beasts. His lion whisperer technique depends on being calm and assertive and Mookie uses no whips, prods or aggresive methods that would harm the animal either physically or mentally.
      Maggie will be a tightrope walker!
      *******
      Maggie is a tightrope walker in a run-down traveling circus that still manages to thrill its audiences with the stunning talent and unexpected glamour of the performers. She is billed as "Magnificent Magnolia" and performs daring stunts on the tightrope while acrobats leap and tumble hundreds of feet below her. She carries a parasol to assist in her balance and tricks. She occasionally assists the knife thrower by appearing as a "target" in his act, as he is a good friend. The circus has been her home since she was a little girl.
    37. OK, this sounds like fun even though I don't particularly like circuses and definitely don't like clowns. I am doing this for fun because it is not fun if you only enter to win.
      That said, here is the pertinent information you need:
      DOA user name:
      LadyFeather
      Size and sculpt of model BJD
      1/3 scale Dollzone Celine
      Is your doll a tiny? (6” and under)
      No
      Would you like your costume critiqued by a judge?
      Sure, why not?
      It was rough selecting a profession for her. Most of the acts I thought of were more a two person act, flyer/catcher on the trapeze, jugglers, floor acrobatics, even to a point a clown act. So she will be a stilt walker, one of the introductory characters when the circus opens or closes, and sometimes between act setups. They tend to be rather individual in their costuming.
    38. It's true that a lot of acts involve more than one person, but you don't need to show a partner. We're just interested in the costume.
    41. I am so excited for this challenge! I've been drawing different costumes and have finally settled on a design.
      Here is my costume sketch. (the blotch by her head is from my camera lens & refuses to be cleaned off, and I didn't feel like editing it out.)
      [IMG]
      I've been gathering inspirational photos like crazy! Here is the costume that inspired the half-skirt, here is the one that inspired me to make arm warmers, and this photo is just so cool because the woman is walking on a tightrope in high heels!
      ***
      Update! Here is her leotard (the third one I've made) with the half skirt. Sewing the jingle bells on the skirt was seriously my favorite part because of how easy it was compared to that hideously thread-y silver fabric I chose. Please ignore the messy room, thank you!!!.
    44. I just designed matching costumes for the rest of my girls... can you tell how much I love this theme? :lol: I think I'll start on one of those ideas tonight to get a feel for the fabric and all. I'll be good and wait until the 2nd to start the costume that I'm entering, though, so don't worry!
    53. Fushia Lace~
      The timeline contains a misprint, which is entirely my fault. The deadline for entry on all challenges is the last day of the month at 11:59 pm and the games start on the 1st of the month at midnight.
      Because of the error we will accept your entry and add your name to the list of designers. I apologize for my mistake.
    55. I've been sketching (possibly during class).
      I've narrowed it down to one of these three, and am leaning towards the one on the left, but possibly with a more johdpur-ie type pant, tucked into high boots. This will depend on whether my boot-making attempt is successful.
      I'll be tackling the boots first.
      [IMG]
      I have quite an extensive stash, so I shouldn't need to purchase too many bits (some zippers for the boots, and some fringey stuff for the epulats).
      I'm also going to have a go at making a hard-cap wig for Xiaowei while I'm at it.
      10th August:
      Welp, I made some boots.
      [IMG]
      On the other hand, all my previous shoe making has been restricted to clumsy flats - so I was probably being overly optimistic.
      They're made from a scrap of leather-look thin PVC that I've had lying around for years. This used up all of the scrap. As flat fabric, it looked just like leather, but now that it's made into boots it looks more like a satin with a pattern on it. boo.
      A wee bit of cardboard which probably was the backing board for a sketch-pad (I can't remember), glue, and two shiny new zips - which are too big.
      I'm not happy with them. I'm going to go ahead and make jodphurs, so they'll do for now, but if I have time before the end of the month I'll re-attempt the boots.
      I spent NZ$6 on the zips (US$4.80) - is the budget in US monies - or local currency?
    57. I hope I'm not breaking any rules posting this. This is my first attempt at this in a very long time, and definitely the first since it has been this well organized. I'm still not sure what goes here and what goes in the chat thread.
      I haven't finalized the exact details of the outfit but I have assembled the materials. I'm not necessarily using all of the trims, but even as shown I'm within the $25 limit. The blue material is sheer, with a gold thread running through it and glued on sequins in a light gold color. The net has glitter bonded in it. The item in the upper right is probably the wig I will use. The only things missing right now are two small pieces of wood to make the 'platforms' for the doll to stand on, a few pieces of leather for straps, and, if needed, a few pieces of wire.
      Well, the materials have changed - no tinsel or beads, but lots of ribbon (new colors) and, of course, the beautiful blue material. I found two very nice elasticized sequined headbands I bought for a dollar each that define the outfit. Now, on to "Stilt Making"!
      [IMG]
      Once I made the base of each stilt bigger (larger clips) she can stand on them!
    58. Yes, this is the place to post pics of your materials and anything that is directly associated to the challenge. If you want to add more pics later, you can add them to the same post.
      A thought just occured to me. I hope people are not adding the cost of a wig to their design budget! A wig is not considered part of the costume. If a person is lucky enough to know how to make a wig and makes one just to wear with the costume, it's still not considered part of the costume and materials for the wig should not be taken out of the budget.
    59. No, I didn't include the wig in the budget - it would have eaten the whole thing, plus some. I was just surprised that I had one that coordinated well with the material, though I've come up with an alternative to use for the wig.
