      The Spectral Challenge
      Game 26

Have you ever found yourself alone in the dead of night with no light source illuminating your surroundings? Have you listened to the wind howl through a stand of trees, heard hollow footsteps when no one was around, or been aware of strange noises that you couldnโ€™t identify?

Have you ever seen a fleeting shape out of the corner of your eye, felt something looking at you, felt a cold touch or had the hair on your neck raise?

What lurks beyond your field of vision, what waits in the darkness? Does the essence of the human spirit linger after death?
Whether you call it a ghost, specter, phantom, apparition or haint, people have believed for thousands of years that the spirits of the dead can return to the human plane.

      Challenge:
Your challenge is to create a ghost that is tied to a specific location. Your character must be assimilated into its surroundings as though it belongs there.

You must state the year your character died, the cause of their death, who they were in life and why they are tied to the location.

You have your choice of the places listed below. They cannot be duplicated and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

In 1912, an 18 year old Irish girl left Ireland to get married, traveling first class by steamboat to New York. She insisted on traveling weeks before the wedding, without her parents, so she could have some alone time with her fiancรฉ and continue planning for the big day. She felt the trip would also give her time to prepare for her new life.

The day before their arrival in New York she fell tragically ill. Adding more tragedy when her papers, monies and jewelry was stolen from her. As ill as she was, she was transported to Ellis Island Hospital as an "unknown". She was so ill that they were not expecting her to recover and the day before she passed one of the nurses found the travel trunk she described that had her special clothing. All the nurses dressed her in her wedding grown as she waited hopelessly for her fiancรฉ to find her, but that was not to be.

She passed the following day. Her ghost still walks the halls of the hospital waiting for the love of her life to find her.....she waits and waits!

      The Legend of Gator Ghost

Around these parts, there is no creature or phantasm more feared than the infamous Gator Ghost. "Gather 'round young'uns" my Grandpaw used to say "and I'll tell y'all the tale of the fearsome Gator Ghost. Back in my day, we didn't have none of that ecology stuff or folks running around trying to save this here plant or that there pollywog Folks 'round here just pretty much done what they always did, what their Daddies did, what their gran'daddies did. If you wanted to hunt, you just took your trusty shotgun out to the woods or swamp an got whatever critters you needed."

"Pretty soon though, some folks started getting greedy. Turns out that some fancy city folks like to wear shoes and belts made outta gator hides and afore you knew it, scalawags from the city would come here and pay good money to the local folk to take them night hunting for gators, just for the skins if you can picture that...all that god gator meat going to waste. Anyway, at night a gator's eyes glow in he dark and before you can say 'who's your Daddy', BAM... the gator gets it right betwixt the eyes. Now that just ain't a fair fight and it weren't long afore those gators were gettin' harder and harder to find."

"Well, round about the 60's a young college feller comes to town and starts going on about the environment and that ecology stuff. He was a smart feller and made a lot of sense. Folks was commin' to realize that if you want gators for the future, you can't just go hunting them willy nilly as you please. He would set out to the swamp every day and count them gators and write stuff about them I his little notebook. Then, one day he went out but never came back. Folks don't know for sure what happened to him, but next thing you know anytime those scalawags went night hunting, the Gator Ghost would rise up out of the swamp and walk on his two hind legs with jaws a-chomping. Some say it is the ghost of that there college feller. Be that true or not, the Gator Ghost is mighty fearsome and you just gotta respect that."

      Her Story
Port Arthur is known to be one of Australia's most Haunted locations, with many recorded sightings of ghosts. I chose to interpret a ghost that has been seen by many people over many years.
From 1833, until 1853, Port Arthur was the destination for the hardest of convicted British criminals, those who were secondary offenders having re-offended after their arrival in Australia. Rebellious personalities from other convict stations were also sent here, a quite undesirable punishment.
My character is the wife of an accountant who at age 17 gave birth to a baby boy who unfortunately died soon after birth, she too died a few hours later, the year was 1860. As Port Arthur was a pretty severe place to reside she was mainly confined to her cottage. The accountants cottage was located next to the parsonage where she became friends with the Parsons wife, they spent many hours in their gardens together. As the baby died without being baptised the parson refused to bury him in the cemetery the baby was therefore buried in the garden. There have been many sightings of her near the parsonage and accountants cottage. She is described as The Lady in Blue as she is seen to wear a blue crinoline and bonnet. She is especially drawn to children and there are recordings of a three year old child running off to play with the nice lady. I believe she is attached to the cottage and garden unable to leave her baby.
I have shown her wearing a faded blued tattered gown, a mourning necklace of her baby and carrying a baby blanket in the hope she will find her baby.

      Sure

I can finally tell his story!

My name is Birch. I am a snow elf, or was. I was the last of my kind when I died. As each entity of my race died their spirit joined with those that had already passed on. I am now the total essence of the snow elf race.

We were giants among the elven races - 7 feet tall, over 2 meters - and viewed by the other elven races as a people to be avoided and feared because of our size and strength. So we lived our lives here, alone, in the border timberlands. By being isolated our numbers dwindled until we were no more.

We protected the area from predators and opportunists; no one dared enter our territory when we were in our prime. I have patroled the wilderness since my death centuries ago; it is my duty to continue to do so as the essence of a forgotten race. But I can do little compared to when we were alive.

It is fall now, my color is beginning to fade. Well before mid-winter I shall patrol the forest in garments of snow white - my hair will lose all color - allowing me to blend with the wintery scenery so none can tell where I am. Even my staff will fade to an ashen grey.

The hut is where I died. It was my home for hundreds of years; I still go there to remember better times. It is sad to realize there will be no more of us to keep the area as pristine as it should be. My staff channels my magic, but only allows me to perform minor illusions to scare away those I don't wish to allow here.

The intruder numbers are increasing. There are already signs that humans have started to infiltrate the area in increasing numbers; leaving their wastes and trash behind, polluting the waters, taking little care of the flora, destroying so much without a hint of concern. I have frightened some away, but there are always more. Soon I will only be able to protect the small area around my home.

It is a sad end to a once proud race.

      Front and Back
I knew I had the right colors for what I wanted to show but it really surprised me once I started processing the photos how well he DID blend in with the scenery.
      Accessories
The glowing flower on the staff looks great at night but then nothing else can be seen so I shoved it under the desk and took the picture. The small inset shows the balloon light I used. The hut was much easier than I thought. I only used two sheets of foam board and one cardboard box. I left it outside overnight which caused the nice sag in the cardboard roof.
      Clothing Detail
Since he blended so well this was necessary to show the detail that was in the clothing. The material chosen for the vest, undersleeves, and pants is to replicate bark while the fringe on the pants represents roots. I had it in a light green (see leaf on staff) but it looked too spring-like so I actually had to go out and buy material this time.
As his colors change through the seasons imagine the other fringes resembling new grasses or flowers swaying in the breeze. As the weather warms his vest will fade and the undertunic will become the most prominent feature; the undersleeves represent branches peeking through the foliage. The fringing was a bit tedious since I had to cut everything about 6" longer than normal, but I think it worked out well.
      EDIT
I've also added a picture of the staff to this. Unfortunately it is almost 36" long and does not photograph well, but I needed to show its basic look other than just in the Glamour shot. It is made from a very weathered branch from one of my Sycamore trees.
      Glamour
I have him standing next to a huge Eastern White Pine we have in our yard. It is at least 40-50 feet tall and drops the most beautiful 6" needles and the pine cones can get up to 10" long or more. It does make a mess with the pine needles but it only does that every other year.
      Extra
The picture I inserted in the story text shows him sitting by his hut reminiscing. You have to look closely to see his legs - he blended quite well in that picture. Even the staff is hidden a bit.

I'm glad I was able to get this done and that it turned out mostly like I wanted. The wig was nice but I liked the grey braids better - it showed more the seasonal changing of color he would go through. I hope you like him. I do. He was one of my first dolls (either #4 or #5, depending if you count my pair of Banjis as one or two). Oh, and he doesn't seem to be yellowing - he looks like he's going beauty green!

    7. Question! Really cool idea but it looks like there is no option for Cliffs or Water. Drat.
So if I choose Castle or Manor House does it have to be inside the house or can it be the Cliffs on the premise of the lands? I know weird question but I have a character that would be great for this that I have been meaning to tell her story.

She grew up loving the lake near her house in rural England. She was painfully shy, but treated the water as her companion, whispering her secrets to it, playing in the shallows.

As she grew older her parents began to fear for her sanity, she talked about speaking with the water, that she would hear it calling to her at night, she also began sleepwalking. Her parents had awoken to her shrieking, her skin covered in slits, thrashing in the icy water of the lake. She spoke hysterically about Water Wraiths trying to drown her in the depths, keep her with them.

These occurrences began happening more frequently. Even though it broke their heart, her parents admitted her into an insane asylum, worried they could no longer keep her safe at home.

The shrieking began late one night. In 1820, the girl was found dead, still bound in her straight jacket, drown, in a room without water, cuts covering her body.

Patients of the asylum continued to complain of being awoken by a girl, covered in scars, soaking wet, begging them to follow her.

      Story
In the year 1923, the body of an unknown girl was found among the hedges of the Hampton Court Maze. For weeks detectives chased one dead lead after the other until the case went cold in late 1924. One year later on the anniversary of her death, the specter was first glimpsed roaming the twisted pathways of Hampton Court...

      ...
I was the daughter of a local barber living in London. I was your average teenager until I met Max. He was 17 and I was 14 and I thought we would be together forever. I thought he was the one until the night of May 1st. We had gone to Hampton Court to visit the maze for our fifth date and it was lovely. I didn't even think much of it when he suggested hiding in one of the hedgerows so we could see the maze after dark. I was that smitten with him. Once the sun went down and the last watchmen made his rounds, we slipped from our hideout. That was when I realized my mistake. As he lead me to the center I knew I wouldn't make it out of this maze and as he wrapped his hands around my throat I knew these hedges would be my haunting grounds.

Now 91 years later Fawn still haunts the paths of Hampton Court. Though she was once your average teenaged girl she is now a malevolent specter that torments anyone who dares stay after the sun sinks below the hedges.

      And I'm lucky 13! Wooooo!
      His Story.
In 1685 the La Belle was able to come close to shore. Many colonists were glad to leave the stinking ship for any amount of time, even if they were ill. Thaddeus was one of those innocent French colonist. He went searching for wood away from the marshy shore, he collapsed for the walk was too much for him. He died of a fever just up the shore from the rest of the colonists, who were all collecting edible vegetation or hunting animals. Too weak to call loudly for help, still he called for help with his last gasps. His call was heard by the spirit of a native karankawa shaman, Far Seer, whose body lay buried beneath where he lay. As Thaddeus breathed his last breath, still not wanting to die, he and the shaman merged and became a protective spirit.
The other colonists never found his body, so they set sail again. They all died shortly after as their ship sank in a storm.
Unable to pass into the next life or travel far from their resting place, they haunt the area. Their third eye allows them to see the evil or the good intentions of those who come near and lets them interact with the material plane. The protective aura of the place made it perfect for future settlers to bury their dead. Some mischief makers have claimed to see lights and hear noises in the cemetery and now steer clear of the place, while others walk peacefully there at night. Thaddeus Far Seer has the ability to blend into the dark cemetery.

      Front view.
A christian, Thaddeus is sometimes at odds with the shaman and prays for the departed.

Back view, his cloak, to the right, is often mistaken for a grave stone and so he blends in with the rest of the cemetery. Though his spirit may be seen spying on the passerby.
      Details front
Dark cloak, dyed black and spatter painted to resemble granite. His colonist clothes are tattered and ripped from the underbrush, the ends dyed dark from the marsh water. He carries a shaman staff with beads and feathers and uses a toppled grave stone complete with flowers, as another form of blending in. The skeletal hand is Thaddeus' own.
Details back, His dark cape now reads POST RIP 1734- 1821. The name change as he moves through the cemetery.
      Ghostly Protector at work.
His lights and the rattles from his shaman staff scare away intruders with mischief in mind.

Story: a long time ago in a galaxy kinda right here only across the pond, Pooki's ancestor, curiously enough also called Pooki (Family name, you know. We won't even try to figure resin genetics, considering they're both preverbal) stole into a neighbor's orchard to steal some apples. All that he found were on the ground, rotting, so he stole into the back of the neighbor's pub/brewery, where he found...a bubbly vat of hard cider. (We also won't really talk about how hard cider is brewed and the logistics of how he could fall in. Just...go with it...)

oooooo....he stole a bit. Then he stole a bit more. Then he leaned over to drink it straight from the vat...and fell in. He drowned...in a vat of hard cider...and his larcenous little soul permeated the orchard.

Centuries later, the apples from that orchard have become a staple in Angry Orchard hard cider...and our little thief has found nirvana in pubs around the world, whose patrons find themselves ordering a great deal...but they can't remember drinking it....

(I chose Angry Orchard because our favorite pub has this great neon sign....)
(Now...if I can just figure how to turn this into a costume....)
(And I just reread the rules and realized he has to be tied to a specific location...will have to figure that one out...)

    17. I would like to give this one a whirl. Can I reserve Castle? I have to see which of my kids want to do this one. Sounds like it could be interesting.

    22. Oh, lots of ideas but too many choices for materials. I could do 6-7 outfits with the fabric I've pulled from the attic. I've got to narrow it down! And then I've got to decide on the wig... use one I have or make one?

    23. I already have everything planned out in my head so I just need to get supplies. Not sure if I'll put my ideas down on paper or not. Usually when I do that everything changes anyway lol.

    25. I'm trying to keep a promise I made to myself......snap a pic of fabric tonight! Too many choices facing me, at this rate I'll never get started :( I had three fashions choices going on in my head for my model, decided to go thru my wigs to see what would suit her outfit the best, did the same with the shoes.....so now at least I know what I'm doing, just need to select fabrics and get 'me butt' in gear!

    26. I went fabric shopping yesterday for this project and I could not find what I was looking for. :| It really sucks living in such a rural area sometimes. Thankfully my massive horde of fabric scraps has given me some interesting ideas. Not what I originally wanted but I think it will work! Good luck everyone!

    29. Ok, again I'll be the first to ask for an extension. I haven't had time to do ANYTHING so far this month. I've been busy with other people's work. The next week is all Thanksgiving cleaning and cooking but I really want to do this one. I'll even post the story to show you why!

    32. Please put me on that extension as well. I've been fighting this timeline and just haven't had the braincells to do anything else. Hoping to get through it this week and get the Pookster's outfit done after Turkey-day, but I'm not even sure what I'm going to do yet! I do have his story...sort of...I've added it to his list, but I realized, after rereading the challenge, that I need to do some editing on that as well...sigh.

I'm a little behind but catching up tonight, fabrics selected, patterns done and snapped a shot of the goodies! Now if I can get started on finishing up on her story I'll be showing some progress ;)

    39. Here are the main ingredients for my wilderness spirit. Also included but not shown are one cardboard box, 2 pieces of foam board, 1 stick, and a whole mess of the pine needles and leaves now coating my back yard. I've got 5 days to make this work.
The stringy stuff on the left is 4 different types of leftover yarn I had that I hope to use for the wig. On the right in the greens is a battery-operated balloon light that I hopefully can get to look right.

I'm sorry, I missed the fact that you already posted. Very very nice - I like the blending of the colonist and the shaman personalities. He definitely looks like he belongs there and the cloak with the 'tombstone', awesome!

    47. Vindalootoo - Oh, so sorry to see you out of this one. It looked like a rather interesting story too! Maybe get back to it and post it in the chat thread?

frenchaddict - your entry is very nicely done. Such a sad story but all too often real life back then. Did you knit the little blanket?

My entry is completely done but I need the sunlight to take the outdoor pictures, so I wait for tomorrow. And the light works in the staff, not that it will show in the pictures.

    50. Ladyfeather...I'll do that. It was going to be funny rather than wonderfully creepy the way others seem to be headed. I had this weird problem getting around thinking of any of my resin kids demising! How totally silly is that? :D

Steamwitch: So cool...and LOVE the light for the third eye! So perfect.
frenchaddict: that's just downright super creepy. The whole baptism and unconsecrated ground lends such great verisimilitude to the entire entry.

Can't wait to see the others!

Your crew is so active I can see why you would have a problem thinking of any of them as expired! I hope you can get it posted - you do such creative things with your crew. I can see him haunting the apple orchard, putting a pinch of mischief in each apple.
And mine's not creepy - just sad.
