      PROJECT RUNWAY
      THE MORE THAN HUMAN CHALLENGE
      GAME 23

      CHALLENGE:
You’ve just been contacted by Marvel Comics! Congrats, you’ve been waiting for this your entire life!

As a fledgling comic book artist and writer you’ve been asked to create a superhero or villain for the president of Marvel Comics. If you can sell your creation to him, you can join the staff and introduce your character to the world!

You must design a costume for either a hero or villain, not based on any previous comic book characters.

Your character will have one superpower and your costume must reflect how that power is utilized. This can be done by the use of accessories or props, which can be purchased or handmade.

Your character can be a serious badass or cute and cuddly. He/she must also be given a name that suggests their particular power.
Here is a list of powers. You will choose a power when you enter your doll. Its first-come, first-served. Once a power is taken, you must choose another; however, the same power can be used for either heroes or villains.

      FIRE ~ Hero/Villain (unavailable)
      WATER ~ Villain
      ICE ~ Villain
      EARTH ~Hero/Villain (unavailable)
      WIND ~ Hero
      X-RAY VISION
      TELEKINESIS ~ Hero/Villain (unavailable)
      SUPER STRENGTH
      SPEED
      SUPER SIGHT
      ELECTRICITY ~ Villain
      LIGHT ~ Villain/Hero (unavailable)
      MAGNETIC FORCES ~ Hero
      TELEPATHY
      INVISIBILITY ~ Villian

      RULES:
The spending limit for the game is $25.00. This includes fabric and all supplies, except thread. For countries other than the US, spend the equivalent currency.

The use of commercial patterns is prohibited. All costumes must be designed by you.
Shoes, socks, stockings and tights are not considered accessories and may be purchased.
You may purchase supplies and design your costume before the challenge begins, but you MAY NOT begin sewing until the game starts.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge theme
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
Entries can be posted anytime between now and May 1st.
The deadline for posting entries is May 1st at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will begin on May 1st at 12:01 AM, PST.
The game will end on May 31st at 11:59 PM, PST. Upon request, a 48-hour extension can be granted from May 31at at 11:59 PM, PST through June2nd at 11:59 PM, PST.
Winners will be posted on or about June 14th.

      PHOTOS:
Your entry must contain 5 photos: full-length photo of front, full-length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages) and a glamour photo that may include props. We would prefer that the glamour photo show a full-length view of your costume with your doll standing up. The photo should showcase your costume to its best advantage. Once upon a time there was a house cat named Tiny. She lived at a Zoo and made the Lab her home. Tiny was also in the early stage of pregnancy.
One day while Zoologists (from around the world) were experimenting on feline DNA, there was a major earthquake. Test tubes were shattered all over the lab. Some of the humans were injured and their blood also splashed about. Everyone settled down, but no one noticed Tiny eating the food that was left out for her prior to the earthquake which was laced with not only the big cats DNA but also with humans.
When it was time for Tiny to give birth she hid around the Ligerโ€™s area, gave birth and left her offspring to be raised by the Ligerโ€™s. No one noticed and as more time passed on, Pukiger (Tinies only offspring) discovered she had some strange powers. She was able to make things move making it easier for her to hide at the Zoo. Pukiger is still young and her telekinesis powers havenโ€™t matured fully yet, but she has the ability to transfer the powerful force of storms and hurricanes to rocks in which the power is stored and used by the other animals for heat in the winter. The rocks get to glow like diamonds! No testing has even been done on Puliger and she still lives at the Zoo. She keeps herself hidden from the human world, wondering just what โ€˜worldโ€™ she belongs in. For now, she stays hidden and is protecting all the animals at the zoo and all of mankind!

      REGULAR MOOKIE:

      THE AMAZING TRANSFORMATION INTO
      :

Mookie's home planet (Plantasia) is very rich in the element Neodymium. As a result, all Plantasians have hyper-magnetism. On Earth, Mookie can control his magnetic forces so that as ordinary, mild mannered Mookie (disguised by wearing glasses a la Clark Kent, he neither attracts nor repels ferrous substances. However, when he chooses to transform into Mighty Magneto Mookie, he uses his Puki power and amplifies his natural magnetism for purposes of helping others. With the help of his helmet, belt and boots, he can direct his powers in several ways.

Since the earth has a core of molten metal, the reverso coils on his boots change the magnetism from attract to repel, enabling Mookie to hover in the air. He does not actually fly and has limited altitude, but this power has made him the "go to guy" for rescuing damsels in distress locked away in towers and kitties stuck in trees.

By fine tuning the magnetic emissions from his helmet, Mookie can transmit an aura of safety around him that comes in handy should he need to cross a line of gun fire. By selecting a position between attract and repel, the bullets slow as they approach him and harmlessly fall to the ground. He is able to rescue a hostage by covering the person with his cape, thus being contained within the protective aura.

Mookie's belt has devices that help him regulate the intensity and direction of the force. He has a gauge that tells him when, for safety reasons, he should limit his power.

      Power: Water; villain

Entry- After a long and stressful weekend at work (which I wasn't even supposed to be at >>) I finally pulled myself together and got this finished enough to enter. Sorry about the all black backgrounds; I was set on putting the photographs to some comic style backgrounds but I had to scrap that idea just to meet deadline.

Do not let her innocent face fool you; the little girl you see before you is more powerful than you could ever imagine. Being cast out of society when her ability to bend water to her will grew too strong to hide, little Georgie Pickett wandered the shorelines of England perfecting her powers in puddles and pools. As her abilities reached their peak, Georgie's heart began to grow bitter for the life she could no longer have with normal people, until one day she finally snapped and became the villain known as Undine. With the ability to breathe under water, Undine has built an empire upon the ocean floor that is ready to take over the world at a moments notice; or at least until her pet kraken grows up.

      Front
      [IMG]

      Back
      [IMG]

Crown- crystal stores much of Undine's powers, making this her weakness
      [IMG]

Trident- given to her by Poseidon himself; used to create whirlpools and tsunamis
      [IMG]

Shin guards- no purpose just for style; rumor says she made them out of two starfish who crossed her
      [IMG]

Glamor 1- "I am Undine; bow before me, filthy mortals!"

Glamor 2- "Release my kraken! ...what do you mean he is napping? Must I do everything myself?!"[IMG]

Good luck everyone and thank you to everyone for the well-wishes and healing thoughts these past few weeks! :aheartbea

I am Oxupent Zespinhaziel, I know not how old I am or where I came from. Shunned from society and no place to go I sought comfort in the darkness, studying this strange mutation that I have become. As I grow stronger and older my control over this Hellfire within me is growing chaotic so for now until I can get a better grip on it I have forged a staff that will allow me to shoot fire with greater precision. Constructing a costume is just all part of the game as I ready myself to unleash my wrath on the world, from now on you shall call me DOOMFLAME!

NOTE: to judges the faux fur at the bottom is actually part of his character and is on the bottom of his legs not attached to the pants, that is not a design detail for the costume.

Front: 6 piece costume constructed in cracked metallic faux leather, cracked glass/foil flame lame, red metallic foil dot spandex.

Back: The fire tunic as slits on both sides for ease of movement
      [IMG]

Detail 1: close up of his "fire" staff, and the contrasting red colors of the cropped jacket (collar and epaulets), belt and armbands
      [IMG]

Detail 2: the button details on his jacket are a cracked glass that I was lucky to find in my stash that went perfectly with the cracked glass effect on the flame fabric.

      Power:

      Invisibility - Villain of course

His name, for this event, is The Amazing Signor Nascosto (Nascosto is Italian for hidden)

      The reasoning behind the outfit:
A magician's major tool is misdirection, thus the points on his outfit signify you must look in both directions to see what is going on at any time. The glittery fabric is to show that it truly is all done with mirrors, or so the audience is led to believe.

It seems Mr. Bunny took an unscheduled vacation so Mr. Easter Duck has stepped in as the understudy.

NOTE: The sequined material was the worst to work with. The friction from the sewing machine needle would melt the plastic and leave residue on the needle. After two or so seams I would have to clean the goop off the needle. Even with doing that after a few more seams I had to get a new needle. I really could have used a teflon-coated needle - that has to be what they use in the factories.

The hat was a leftover New Year's hat that just happened to fit my doll. There are lights on the crown but I 'shopped' then out. They really don't show too much to begin with. You can vaguely see one in the back view of the outfit.

      The reasoning behind the alias:

Every villain needs an alias, and not all villains like to be known publicly; it takes away from their efficiency. As a magician "The Amazing Signor Nascosto" gets to travel almost anywhere in the world. Known in the underworld as a unequaled spy/thief/assassin prospective clients hire him for a show wherever he is needed. But even they don't know his secret. Signor Nascosto is also an excellent entertainer so he draws no attention to the fact that he works outside the law. In fact half his shows are entertainment only, just a way to pass the time between hires, not illegal business.

      His act:
As the finale of his act he 'disappears' in front of his audience. He shows the audience that there is no trap door under him by standing on a large wooden mat brought in by his assistant (the only one who knows the real trick behind his disappearance). Then the lights dim and a rotating circular curtain drops slowly around him. By the time the top of the curtain reaches the floor there is no one there!
The microphone hangs in midair and the audience hears him thank them for coming to the show before it too drops to the floor.
As the applause dies down Signor Nascosto emerges from the backstage area dressed in a duplicate outfit and bows to the audience, leaving them wonder how he did that. But we know, don't we?

He just had to show off for the glamour shot!

And for those of you who really want to see his invisibility costume...

I am not a comic book aficionado, my taste runs to non-anime manga, so this is probably a bit off base. I had no intention of joining this project until I put on my Queen album and heard Freddie belting out "I'm the Invisible Man". So you can blame Queen for activating my strange sense of humor.

Garnet, an aspiring young fashion designer, is humiliated at New York Fashion Week when she is refused admittance to the tents. Power - Wind hero
      [IMG]

I did it!!! I finished on time!!!

      Hero = Breeze
      Power = Wind

To protect this young hero’s secret identity, Breeze wears a crocheted mask when she’s out helping people. She hasn’t outgrown her princess phase so she wanted her costume to be big and poufy. Using her wind power has ripped the seams on her skirt. Constantly creating wind and flying around has also tattered her thin cape.

Breeze is a very free-spirited girl and likes running around on the grass so she doesn’t like wearing shoes. If she’s in the city or there’s no grass, she just uses her power to keep her feet off harsh terrain.

She is still learning how to use her power so the streamers dangling from her wrists help her visualize the wind to create anything from a gentle breeze to a powerful gust. Someday she’s sure she will be able to create tornado forced winds.

All she’s doing now as a hero is pushing villains away from people, giving the innocent a chance to flee.

    30. Awesome entry picture Vindalootoo. Looks like your Pookster is getting a head start on looking other-worldly/magical/more than human.

    31. The Amazing Signor Nascosto's cover is that of a magician. I still haven't quite figured out how to engineer the prop I need. The costume is easy - it's done with mirrors, like all magician's tricks! I'll add fabrics as I find them to this post.
And we all know that the Pookster is destined to be ruler of the Universe. Of course it will be his own little Universe, but still, he'll be the Supreme Ruler forever and ever.

      EDIT

Here are the materials I chose to use - not really overly flashy but appropriate. There will be additional pieces but only for prop use - these will be for the main magician outfit. The two trims are identical except one is iridescent while the other is not.
His superhero outfit will be, um, real easy? Once he's invisible you can't see him, right? And his powers only work on living matter, not clothing so.... cue the stripper music! He can control whether his is invisible or not, so it is possible for him to be invisible while fully dressed. And this definitely limits his evil-doing to warm weather or being indoors in a warm area.

I didn't notice it before, but the material on the right is darker on the wrong side, giving me three shades of grey to work with for this! It's a bit more pronounced than the photo shows, but any metallic fabric is hard to photograph. Even the knit pattern has sparklies in it. Very glitzy, showman-like fabrics.

    32. A plenipotent Pookster - eek!
I have a fabric array laid out for my costume - not properly designed yet but thinking lots of icicle-like spikes (ice villain)... Will have to be quite organised getting things done, as away two of the May weekends, gulp!
These are the kinds of colours I want to use anyhow, though may well not end up using all of them:

    33. That new logo is so cool!

I've been knitting, ripping out, knitting, ripping out ... fortunately, my bunny girl is small, but this is the first time I've tried to knit for her (or anything as small as she is) and it's giving me fits. I've got a solid concept for her villain character. Having fun with it! Below are my materials: cotton and metallic gold crochet thread, acrylic jewels, and some very tiny brass beads. Not shown: papier mache molded on a latex glove, Mod Podge, gold powder, zipper pull.

As of 5/9, I have got my garment finished and am working on accessories.

5/11: Blocking 'n' embellishing. Those Anchor Hocking pint glasses are the perfect size!

5/13: Stick a fork in me, for I are done!

    36. I don't think I'm going to get around to actually doing concept art for how this might work. I went out and bought supplies today. Lots of ribbon that will blow around in the wind. I think the design might look tattered as her costume gets wind damaged as she uses her power.

    38. For once, I've made a proper start on sewing early - as I know I'm away two of the next three weekends and really want to finish! I've decided my ice villain will be themed around the deadly variant black ice, and want a costume themed around spiky icicle shapes in dark icy colours... Unfortunately I discovered my attempts at sketching designs did not reflect what I can actually sew (I'm v much a novice!). So this last weekend saw me attempt to get to grips once again with my sewing machine and get a bit better - though I struggled quite a lot when sewing lots of different shapes together with figuring out the right side / wrong side sewing of seams and pinning bits together - so am getting better at that too! Here's progress on the top, skirt and cloak!

Yeah, I'm going to be on the road for the latter part of the month, so I had to hustle to get done early. I had to withdraw from the last two challenges I put in for, and I DID NOT want that to happen again!

    44. I really hope I can finish this one. I am a major comic book geek. But we had a tragic death in the family two weeks ago and life has just been hard getting back to since. Hopefully a little sewing will get me back on my feet because I can't shake the idea I have for this. We have another two weeks right? :sweat

Great job polyhymnia! Your little rabbit is so adorable. I hope she doesn't mind me saying that though seeing she is a villain and all! :)

    50. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I've been...well, busy. Just got married to my longtime partner and DP. I still hope to get Pook's outfit done. will have to do it at MisCon this weekend, but, hey...I don't really plan on doing a lot else. I need REST! Been gardening/construction in the post fence-replacement back yard ten hours a day and working on the boy's tuxes the rest of the time. Sleep? What's that? :D But here are their tuxes!

witchcraft: I'm sorry for your loss. Hope you can find the time/energy/spirit to finish. Good therapy.

      polyhymnia:
I CONCEDE! That...is an absolutely brilliant concept! And adorable to boot. Presentation: excellent!

(but I'm still going to try to finish. Pook needs con clothes.)

Adding it here to avoid too much off topic! :D

Wiishu was our bracelet bearer (Carolyn is very indulgent of him) and he did have some friends in attendance. Here are a couple of links to pix. There's more over on the photostory forum, which is probably a better place for it. :D But thanks, everyone, for the kind wishes!

I managed to get most of my girl's outfit done yesterday and I've been working on her accessories for the past week. I will share progress photographs later tonight if all the campers today do not poop me out (holiday weekends are nuts at a state park lol).
