Project runway ~ the logo challenge ~ game 22

Feb 14, 2014

    1. PROJECT RUNWAY
      THE LOGO CHALLENGE
      GAME 22

      CHALLENGE
This challenge will determine the outfit that will represent Project Runway for the year 2014. The winning costume will be used in the Project Runway logo until 2015.

In the past we have asked for glamour designs. This year, designers are free to create any type of outfit they choose: formal, casual, sportswear, loungewear, business attire, etc.

The outfit must consist of black and white fabric. This is a classic concept that endures. The outfit must be solid black and solid white, or black and white checks, black and white stripes, a black print on a white background, or a white print on a black background. A solid color may be paired with checks, stripes or prints, or solid black and solid white may be paired. Also checks, stripes and prints can be paired without a solid color.

An accessory must be made of red fabric. If you make more than one accessory they must all be red.

      RULES:
The spending limit for the game is $25.00. This includes fabric and all supplies, except thread. For countries other than the USA, spend the equivalent amount in local currency.

The use of commercial patterns is prohibited. All costumes must be designed by you.

Shoes, socks, stockings and tights are not considered accessories and may be purchased.

You may purchase supplies and design your costume before the challenge begins, but you MAY NOT begin sewing until the game starts.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge theme
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
Entries can be posted anytime between now and March 1st.
The deadline for posting entries is March 1st at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will begin on March 1st at 12:01 AM, PST.
The game will end on March 31st at 11:59 PM, PST.
Upon request, a 48-hour extension can be granted from March 31st at 11:59 PM PST, through April 2nd at 11:59 PM PST.
Winners will be posted on or about April. 14th.

      PHOTOS:
Your entry must contain 5 photos: full-length photo of front, full-length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages), and a glamour photo that may include props. We would prefer that the glamour photo show a full length view of your costume with your doll standing up. The photo should showcase your costume to its best advantage. These photos must be included in your entry. They must be 480 x 640 pixels.

Here is my entry for this challenge. Just for a little back story to the garment; Sarah is a lady of the unseelie court known as Lady Red Shoes by the local townsfolk. She is said to rove the hillsides of Ireland catching up unattended children and stealing them away. She takes on many different human forms but you can always tell it is her by the smell of wet moss that follows her and of course by her classic red shoes.

The backpack was the most troublesome item there. And once I finally had it finished I came up with several other ideas that would have worked better. Oh well...

I made all the accessories except the sunglasses and the sneakers. I did alter the sneakers by replacing the regular laces with elastic. They slide on an off now without having to undo the laces!

      BACK VIEW
      [IMG]

DETAIL #1: Back closure is actually Velcro, but I added the buttons embellished with rhinestones with a loop closure for decorative effect. A bow of velvet ribbon was added because the back looked kind of plain.
Gloves were added for the required red accessory.

DETAIL#2: Necklace. A girl has to have some jewelry.

GLAMOUR SHOT: A rather ho-hum glamour shot but I am not used to working with bigger dolls and poor Alexa is in desperate need of restringing so her posing ability is quite limited.

    14. The outfit must be black/white and the accessories red. Ribbon, lace, zippers, buttons etc are considered trims and can be any color you'd like. So, yes, ribbon can be red if you choose.

    19. Ssapdra ~ Yes, fantasy clothing is allowed, but you must keep to the theme of black and white as described in the rules. Embroidery is considered a trim so it can be any color. All accessories must be red. It's hard to say if bracers are an accessory or not. I would say that if it's not part of the main costume, then they would be. In other words if the costume would be complete without them, then they are an accessary. If the bracers are part of the costume, then they're not.

I don't think the judges are going to be that strict in your case because it's a fantasy costume. If you want to make them red, I would go for it, but you wouldn't have to. You still would have to include a red accessory though.

Are we thoroughly confused now? LOL

I do have a quick question however. In regards to the red fabric used for accessories, can it be patterned as long as it is red? (I mean a red on red pattern). Also, do the accessories need to be entirely red or can they also be part black and white as well??

    25. Ellipses ~ The accessories must be red, but they can be a patterned print. If you choose to use black or white make sure that red is the main color. The solid or red on red patterns are going to 'pop' and be more noticeable to the judges, so you may want to consider that.

    35. OK, I'll be first. I plan on a three piece outfit; slacks, shirt, and jacket. The accessories will be a slouch hat and a shoulder backpack. I have the patterns made but they won't make much sense if I photograph them.
The materials are black and white thin vinyl, both with a fake leather embossing. The black and white print material is a very soft stretch knit that I hope I can tame into a shirt. I have alternative material to use if it gets too difficult, but I really like the print. There will be zippers everywhere, even a few places you wouldn't look for them.
The red is a small piece of canvas for a backpack, which may be a bit of a challenge considering the shape I want to make and the size it would have to be. I have two fake zipper lanyards, one of which I hope to make the main strap for it [probably the red and black one]. I got them several years ago at AC Moore for a buck on close-out. I've been wondering what to do with them ever since.
The thread may or may be used for a hat. If it gets too difficult I'll just use a piece of stretch jersey. I may not use everything shown but at least I have it gathered together.
And, as you can see, his sneakers are already to go.

    37. Wow, that's one heck of a plan LadyFeather, can't wait to see what you do!
In the beginning I knew what I was going to do but as the days went by and the choices grew, I started scratching my head :( This morning I made the choice of #1- doing something that would be FUN for me to do, #2- something the model could wear all the time, #3- having fun with this project (Fun being the reason why I joined this project).
Today I will bring the model with me into the craftroom and see how the scale of design on my stock fabrics looks on her and draft something up!
I have an image in my head.....my model is 19-20, young and sassy so I can't get away with a too mature look for her!

    38. I actually started on this the night of the first day and had finished the white part of the dress I am making that night. Usually I am not this far ahead for the PR challenges lol! But the dress I am making is going to be my girl's main outfit so I guess I am just excited to get this going. Now I am in embroidery stage as I planned something pretty intricate to embroider on the dress and I decided to do it by hand instead of my machine so it has a more rustic look. I am doing a whimsical fantasy dress for my girl but haven't decided on the red accessory yet. I have probably five or six ideas for that in my head lol.

No photographs yet; I will take some tonight of my progress if I find the time. But that is my update. :)

    40. Ready, set, GO! I started to draft the pattern, selected fabric I think will work but not sure of the checked. I ordered some shoes from DDE, it's listed as red so whatever shade the red is will have to do as I don't have much supplies for this girl :( I know the direction I'm headed towards but not sure of how it's going to flow from brain to hand!

    41. Wow! That is a diverse group of fabrics. It will be interesting to see how you tie them all together in an outfit.

    42. Here's a reminder about shoes: Puchased shoes are exempt from the $25.00 budget limit. For the purposes of this game only hand made items are considered accessories. Purchased shoes are not considered accessories. Hand made shoes are considered accessories and will be included in the judging.

      Thanks!

It looks like your black vinyl is the same as my white vinyl! Unfortunately the black and white don't have the same pattern, but they are close. And scratch the jacket for my outfit - it would hide the shirt, which I don't want. It MAY turn into a vest but I'm really leaning to elimination of anything that would cover the shirt.

    48. UPDATE...... I'm still at it, getting ready to see how all my drafting is going to work out today :( Sewing doll stuff isn't the same as human stuff but I'm slowly getting the hang of it with little mishaps along the way! I didn't get to the fabric store so whatever I have on hand is what I'm using.

I have a question: Somehow I got a little confused, is the red being used just for accessories or can we use red trim on the outfit? Also, can the red have white designs in it when it's being used for accessories?

Hope everyone is having fun ;)

    49. I keep forgetting to take photographs for this. :doh But I am still working on the embroidery. My fibro makes me take longer but it is coming along. I still haven't decided on an accessory...I hope to choose and start on it this week.

    50. PRGerry ~ Yes you can use red as a trim. The red you use for your accessory can be patterned with another color, but the judges will be looking for an accessory that gets attention, so use your own judgment.

    52. its not necessary/required to post photos of your progress or sketches, some people just likes to do it just for the fun and motivation. :)

    53. That's correct. Some designers like to share their progress and others just prefer to post their finished outfit.

    54. Little update on my progress this week: I have finally decided on my accessory and will begin on it tonight. At this point in my progress I have decided to not take any photographs since I am so far in. I feel if I did I would give my whole project away since it is nearly finished lol.
