edit - newbie question, sorry if this sounds stupid, but does making patterns count as "designing" and may be started before March 1st?

Well, here goes:

FRONT
[IMG]
(Sorry about the mirror - I had to wire it to her hands because she kept dropping it and didn't want to take it off once I had managed to secure it enough. Even so she managed to wave it around so much the handle broke ...)

BACK
[IMG]
I used scrap plastic as boning for the laced back. Worked like a charm!

DETAILS
[IMG]
The mirror came from a cosmetics thingy that I cut to size. The backing is the same white silk that I used for the underskirt and the bodice's lining.

Instead of a regular appliquรฉ I cut the symbol out of the shell fabric, exposing the white silk lining.
The overskirt is pulled up into ruffles with a decorative bow at the bottom.

GLAMOUR
[IMG]

My design was inspired by Jostein Gaarder's "The Solitaire Mystery". It contains a story within a story, of a sailor who, after being the only survivor of a shipwreck, finds himself stranded on an enchanted tropical island. He only has his deck of playing cards for company and starts making up personalities for each card: Some of them are described in detail, but each colour shares a signature colour scheme. The black colours are all male except for Ace and Queen; the red are all female save the Jack and King. One day, two "dwarves" in blue uniforms come strolling up to his hut: His imaginary playing card friends are coming to life in ones and twos. All of the solitaire dwarves feel cold to the touch and aren't bothered by temperature; this is what gives away the Joker a century later, who appeared last but managed to flee the magical island when it collapses in on itself instead of being turned back into a card like all the others ...

Clubs are described as having curly (and somewhat wild) brown hair and a dark complexion. They wear blue uniforms, Ace and Queen wear blue dresses. I chose white as a contrasting colour; it isn't mentioned in the book, but I guess they'd be a bit more fancy than the (explicitly mentioned) black club-shaped buttons on the Numbers' uniforms.
All Queens carry mirrors and keep looking at themselves in them; their crowns are taller and slimmer than the Kings'.

This was a 90% "use up the stash" project - the only supplies I actually had to buy were the white beads for the picot beading around the bodice hem. And that was only because the ones I'd been planning to use weren't solid colour, and the blue shone through the glass ...

Surprise! No extension this time! I got a lucky break with the sun around noon so I could get the glamour shot.

ITEMS MADE FOR CHALLENGE
OUTFIT:
Armor consisting of one crown, one jacket, one collar, one skirt, a set of bracers, and heavy wool pants.

Details:
Armor was made of thin cork sheets covered with gold 'duck-tape' to simulate hammered metal. Each plate was hand sewn to a wool backing. The armor plates for different areas were cut with the 'duck tape' texture either horizontal or vertical to give a less harmonious look.
The larger spades were cut from a sheet of scrapbooking paper while the rhinestone look trim was from a roll of decorator trim. The tiny spades decorating the armor plates were purchased from a vendor (for a dollar!) that used to make skating and dance costumes. They are also the right size for decorating fingernails. They were originally red so I had to color each one with a permanent marker.
The jacket is closed with Velcro, one of the rare times you will see me use it. I needed a smooth join and it Is the only way possible to get it โ€“ even a zipper would be too bulky.

Accessories:
One Kwan Dao (polearm) with ringed Spade blade and counterweight.
One dagger.
One Royal flag.
Horse armor and trappings.

Details:
The weapons were made from a single block of Sculpey. The rings were salvaged from my huge bag of junk jewelry.
The saddle blanket is a stained doll house rug. The tassels and trim used to decorate the horse armor are salvaged; they are ones my dog (when a puppy) plucked off of my expensive footstool. I found duplicate fringe and replaced it, twice; after that I hid the footstool - that trim was expensive! I couldn't throw them out; I knew they would come in handy someday. She's nine now.
Over 500 armor plates were used between the outfit and horse armor.

Here's the pictures:

I didn't realize when I took the pictures that he was not wearing both the bracers. Sorry!

10. First-timer question - is making patterns considered designing or sewing? Are we allowed to use self-made patterns we already have or does everything have to be made from scratch?

12. Thanks for your quick reply! I read the rules, but I don't understand completely - sorry if this sounds stupid do you but I'm not a native speaker :?
In other words, When am I allowed to start making my patterns? Am I allowed to use patterns I already made from scratch by myself, but not specifically for this challenge? (e.g. if the costume included a pair of pants, am I allowed to use a pants pattern I made last year, or do I need to make a new one?)

14. Jany ~

You can create patterns before the challenge starts. You may use any pattern you have previously made. Pants would be a common pattern to reuse, unless you wanted to create a special design. I suspect most designers adapt their patterns to fit the challenge. Please take into consideration that the judges are looking for unique outfits, so you may want to create something a little special for the challenges.

21. ankhensepnamun- I have been doing PR for almost 2 years now and have never had to provide proof of my costs. I have been under the $25 a few times and even over once (well that wasn't just for PR though lol). So don't stress about pricing all your supplies; just see the $25 limit as a gauge of what quality of project to produce. If you still aren't sure just PM our host elfmoon. She is wonderful to talk to and so helpful! :)

25. Aw, that sucks. Get better soon, Witchcraft!

It's the first day of spring break for me, so while I didn't get much done in the past weeks (the basic construction of the bodice and a bit of decorative stuff, but nowhere near as much as I'd hoped) I'm planning to get to work on the skirt today and hopefully finish without needing the extension.
I changed my mind about the "sleeves" yet again, I hope I have enough beads to make them work the way I'm envisioning! I'm spending more money on beads than on fabric, lemme tell ya. I also managed to drop and subsequently lose my only beading needle. :sigh Oh well, another trip to the craft store it is ...

27. Witchcraft - I feel your pain. I've been hobbling around all week; did something to my back, again. I think I need a new computer chair.
Jany - if you have a magnet run it around the floor. Sometimes you can be surprised by what it finds. I have one that has an extending handle so I can just walk around and find needles I didn't even know that I lost. Plus pins, staples, jewelry parts, strange metal bits from who knows what.
Project-wise, not doing too bad. I keep changing the design though. I think I'm just about done the armor; I found a glue that works. The underclothes are cut out and I'm deciding on trim for those right now. Haven't touched the wig....

39. PRGerry, namaro, thanks for the compliments. I've always wanted to do some sort of armor for one of my dolls and this was the perfect project. Oh, and the only reason the wig didn't fall off his head is that I put the weight of the pony tail on the back of the horse. The wig is a 9-10 and he takes an 8-9, but it was just what I wanted for his hair.
The horse is an older My Twinn horse. The new ones have all four feet on the ground and look rather boring, if you want my opinion.

57. Blue Oracle, Witchcraft, Steampunker! Ah, we're losing too many participants to illnesses and bad happenings! This theme seems to have been cursed from the beginning. Maybe we should have included Jokers in the mix to ward off bad vibes!
I've been lucky so far this winter and haven't been hit with anything too severe. Witchcraft, I'm in New Jersey and know exactly what you're saying about the weather. The temperatures have been like a yo-yo for the past two months. It affects me too, but evidently not as severely as it does you.
TinHao, your boy is impressive in his outfit, especially standing in the snow. The outfit is outstanding and the ruffling is gorgeous! Lovely work!
Ankhensepnamun, lovely outfit on your big girl. I really like the criss-crossing of the gold ribbon. You could try making your own stand with a dowel rod and a large wooden base. It would slip up the back of the doll and could be tied to their waist! I use them all the time.
Jany, very nice queen! Somehow I agree with the blue for the gown, especially the royal blue. The mirror is a nice touch. Is the edge done in glass beads? And I'll have to check out that book - it sounds very interesting.

59. Sorry to hear that you had to withdraw Blue Oracle, Witchcraft and Steampunker. I hope things are soon better for you.
Jany: Your girl looks very regal in royal blue. The cut out for the club symbol is such a clever idea. I like how you related your theme to the story.
PR Gerry: It looks like you got the hang of sewing for boobs. She is very sexy looking in the red bustier and stockings shot. I love the detailing on the underskirt.
Tin Hao: Your design is so creative. Looks like there was some very complex pattern making involved. Great job.
Ankhensepnamun: I love the ribbon work on your design. It has an authentic look for a queen.

Boy, the judges are going to have a tough time this go round. I think all the entries are winners.
