Project Runway The Holiday Sleepover Challange Game 21

Dec 13, 2013

    1. PROJECT RUNWAY
      THE HOLIDAY SLEEPOVER CHALLENGE
      GAME 21

      CHALLENGE

During this time of year, many people travel home for the holidays. This usually means staying with family and friends for several days while enjoying the festivities. Among the clothing packed in their suitcase are pajamas. Your challenge is to design sleepwear, either adult or children’s. Since it is the holiday season, your sleepwear can be holiday themed, but it doesn’t have to be.

You will design pajamas/nightgown and a robe. You must make one accessory, such as: slippers, nightcap, pillow, blanket/quilt/sleeping bag, overnight bag, or anything associated with sleeping.

This is not an underwear challenge, so no ‘Victoria’s Secret’ outfits please!

      RULES:
The spending limit for the game is $25.00. This includes fabric and all supplies, except thread. For countries other than the US, spend the equivalent currency.
The use of commercial patterns is prohibited. All costumes must be designed by you.
Shoes, socks, stockings and tights are not considered accessories and may be purchased.
You may purchase supplies and design your costume before the challenge begins, but you MAY NOT begin sewing until the game starts.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge theme
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
Entries can be posted anytime between now and Jan. 1st.
The deadline for posting entries is Jan.1st at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will begin on Jan.1st at 12:01 AM, PST.
The game will end on Jan.31st at 11:59 PM, PST.
Upon request, a 48-hour extension can be granted from Jan. 31at at 11:59 PM, PST through Feb. 2nd at 11:59 PM, PST.
Winners will be posted on or about Feb. 14th.

      PHOTOS:
Your entry must contain 5 photos: full-length photo of front, full-length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages), and a glamour photo that may include props. We would prefer that the glamour photo show a full length view of your costume with your doll standing up. The photo should showcase your costume to its best advantage. These photos must be included in your entry. They must be 480 x 640.

Anastasia is very excited for her trip to Grandma's. She has new jammies and a new robe too!

Everything fits well, and rubber duckie is ready to go along too!

Her accessories got a bit out of hand, but there are plenty to choose from. I don't know if the Pink Pottomus is an accessory or a prop; I altered a free pattern to make it - it was supposed to be eight inches, not two!

The smocking was very easy to do on the 1/8 inch gingham, and it gave good fullness too.

Here she is, all arrived and getting ready for bed. The special blanket that Grandma keeps for her is already on the bed.

An extra. She was so tired from travelling and finally getting there that she fell asleep on top of the covers, but under her special blanket.

    17. I had a bunch of flannel in a tote that I realized last night was in the garage..so have to go shovel a path today after work..lol..I have my ideas set and made a 1st draft of the pattern last night just needs a few little adjustments and I'm good to go. No procrastination this year. Hoping I can find fabrics at home as I don't want to go out in this horrid snowy weather we are having right now. Though I do have a Walmart close by that still carries fabric so if all else fails I shall check there.

    19. @Kitty Blue
That's why I'm glad I have an attic! But it's half full of material, yarn, and doll props!
I got to spend yesterday morning serging and cutting the basic pieces for the outfit. The serging was the hard part - keeping it straight on the 1/8 inch gingham! We had a late dinner with the family and while we chatted after dinner I got part of one sleeve done! Yay!
Pardon the shadow in the lower left but here's a shot of some of the pieces. The white terry in the background is part of the materials that I will use. I really wanted blue but I'm not allowing myself to buy more material until I've used 100 yards (self imposed rule that never works).

    20. Oh I do have an attic..lol..that is my studio/sewing room its just a tote of fabrics that I was going to sell off because I have waaaay too much..lol..so I had put all the stuff I sorted through in the container and I didn't know my boyfriend put it in the garage.

love your nightdown so far I'm a big fan of gingham...and that is so true I've been attempting to use the fabrics I have instead of shopping for more. I don't even want to think about how many yards of fabric are in my attic..lol..which is also full of doll props as well. ;)

Naw. Free ball, winging it, and good old-fashioned Indiana Jones "making it up as you go along." Time honored traditions! :D I keep thinking I should make a standard pattern for Pooki, but I always just lay him on the fabric and cut around him! :D

    26. Well, the jammies are done. I'm going for a cool summer look and polar bears aren't in the script but the robe makes her look like a polar bear is hugging her so... back to the drawing board. Any robes I had as a kid always matched the jammies, so I had very few robes for summer - you just didn't need one. I'll figure something out - like she brought two sets of jammies with her! She's spending a holiday weekend with grandma at the shore - would that be allowed? The accessories are coming along, but not as quickly as I'd hoped.

Soooo, family is back stateside and I'm back in doll play mode once again. I'm starting on my design first thing in the morning after I have my first cup of coffee. I was all set to draw out my design but now I see we don't have to! I'm going to use what I had found in the house as I did check out the fabric store and found nothing better.

    28. well I'm completely stuck because the pj's I was wanting to make for my girl would look silly with a robe...so back to square one guess I'll do something more simple and boring. Totally forgot about the robe part. *sigh* and of course I tore thru all of my fabrics and I just can't seem to find something that would look good for either idea...hate to go out and buy more fabric...might just take a break this week and work on another project, still plenty of time to go.

    30. Hi PRGerry!
Jammies are done, so are the slippers and robe. I'm working on the blanket and stuffed toy she takes to bed with her - both are very time consuming! I've gathered the props (suitcase, bathroom toiletries, etc.) and still have to find the bed in the attic for the glamour shot. I'm way ahead of my usual pace for this game!

    32. Well I'm definitely behind like usual...been spending most of my time looking for the right fabric and still no luck. My local fabric shops really suck at carrying cool fabrics..lol..so another trip is in order today and I'll just have to choose whatever they have since all the stuff I have at home I don't have enough of or its just the wrong fabric for what I want to do. So this weekend will be sew like a mad woman weekend..lol.

    39. All the parts are done, I just need to put everything together for the photo-shoot. We just got 12 inches of snow and had to defrost the cold water pipe to the second floor so today didn't work for pictures. I'm not sure if they will take the toy as an accessory or as a prop. It was taken from a free pattern (Lion Yarns) for an eight inch toy that I shrunk to two inches - quarter scale like the doll. Either way I do have enough accessories to fit the rules.

I think I found everything I need, it's hard at times to locate things in my doll room, I keep trying to organize but doesn't work out the way I plan. I have to re-read the rules to make sure I post correctly as this is the first time for me.

    49. phooey..of all the things that I thought would be the easiest i didn't make the robe big enough..sigh..not sure what I'm going to do as I highly doubt I can get to the fabric store anytime soon. and I'm not really liking the robe made out of this thin fleece at all but its the only thing I could find. so back to square one on how to fix it. Really wanted to finish tonight. the PJs and slippers are done though now...also still need to figure out accessories besides the slippers.

    50. I've been that route before! You can always use flannel - that's what I used when the terry made her look like she was being swallowed by a polar bear. And that was the finest terry I could find! Robes don't have to be heavy. Summer robes can be made of cotton materials.
On the too small sizing, It depends on where it's too small. You can always open the side seams and add a piece of braid or ribbon for effect - same with down the center of the fronts and the back. It's tricky but the sleeves can be slit to add extra width the same way, and a piece can be added to make a fancy cuff.

    51. Yikes, I feel for you Kitty Blue as that's what happened to the first robe I sewed up, funny 'cause after making the pattern I did do a sample and all was well :( I thought I was going to be finished today but the hours flew by and I spend too much time on the stupid toy! I should have everything set up for a morning shoot so I can make good use of the added light.

      How's everyone else doing???

    54. looks like we had similar ideas Blue Oracle...completely different character prints but similar idea for the robe and sleep mask..lol..that is if I ever finish mine. Looks cute..I was unable to find decent character prints or iron ons so I had to work with a more childish pattern for my girl. Hoping to finish up mostly today...we shall see...still wish I could have found better fabric for my robe. *shrugs*

    55. Blue Oracle your project looks sooo colorful and cute! I love the fabric you used for the robe ;)

My update......(can you hear the drum roll lol) Well, outfit and stuff done, victim set at the scene, room all set-up....lights....but low camera battery! Here we go with puertorican Murphy's law as I couldn't find the charger and tried using the one for my Bluetooth but the light on the camera would turn on but a few seconds later turned off but after tracking my use from the last time I used my camera I found it.....having a hot cup of coffee to calm down after the drama and I'll be set ;) This is one of the reasons I don't like to leave anything for the last minute, I know I still have time!

    56. you are right..but since I was going for more of a winter pj set I though something in fleece would be better. I was going to go through all my options of trims, etc but ended up in the end just recutting it out..now just need to sew it all together. had just enough to remake it..so false alarm work will be done tonight (hopefully)

For once I didn't do a sample I was like this should be fine..chop chop chop..silly big girl has big hips compared to the rest of her..lol.
