Project Runway 'The Glitz and Glamour Logo Challenge WINNERS POSTED!

Jan 15, 2011

    1. DOA Project Runway: The Glitz and Glamour Logo Challenge
      Game #4

Please read the following information carefully as some of the criteria has changed for this contest only. A new category has been implemented that will not be used after this challenge.

How would you like to see your doll featured in a logo like the one above? If so, then this challenge is for you!

Edit: the logo will feature your photograph of your doll and will NOT be a black silhouette.

We are creating a logo for our game that will become part of the main thread and also be used in all future challenges. By entering this challenge you are giving us permission to use a photo of your doll for Project Runway purposes and it will become the sole property of Project Runway. In other words, the photo cannot be posted anywhere else and is for our exclusive use. This refers to the glamour shot only. The other photos normally entered as part of the challenge will not be affected.

For this challenge we are asking for evening wear. All out glitz, glamour and razzle dazzle are required! We would like to see modern clothing that would be worn at a Hollywood function, such as the Academy Awards.

For the ladies weโ€™d like to see original gowns/costumes that are runway chic and fashion savvy.

For the gents weโ€™d like formalwear: pants, shirt and jacket. Vests may be included. Shirts can be lace or have frills.

The normal categories for challenges are: Interpretation, Design Concept, Accessories and Aesthetics. For this challenge only we are adding a fifth category: Photography. This will pertain to the glamour shot only and will be awarded 1 through 5 points like the other categories.

Since the winning glamour shot will be photoshopped onto a logo it requires the following specifications. The glamour shot must contain the full body. It must be a runway/fashion magazine pose. It must be taken in front of a plain background. It must be taken on a flat surface, no rugs or fabric under foot. No props can be used except a doll stand. It would be appreciated if the stand could be photoshopped out before submission, or hidden from view. The focus must be sharp and clear and the lighting good. Please refer to the main thread for tips on photography.

Please remember to include the required photos in your entry post so that everything is in one place. Progress photos and design concepts can be in a separate posts.

For this challenge Adarhysenthe and I will be judging along with a third person.

Entries must be posted by midnight Feb 1st ST and the challenge will end on March 1st at midnight PT. Judging will be concluded on March 14th when the winners will be announced. Only the first place winner will be used on the logo.

Please refer to the main thread before asking questions as most of the answers are provided there.

This is a chance to show off your design skills! We hope you are as excited as we are about this special challenge!

Good luck to everyone and let the games begin!

Regrettably and after much discussion, Adarhysenthe and I have decided a new rule is needed.
If a contestant withdraws (drops out) of more than 2 challenges in a calendar year without notify one of us, that person will not be allowed to enter the next 3 consecutive challenges.

Sorry to have to implement this!

      Congrats to our winners!

Adara is working on the logo and we hope to have it ready soon!

    4. Don't let the new photo category intimidate you, if that's what it is! It will only be used for this challenge.

The purpose is only to make sure that the glamour photo is done correctly since it has to be photoshopped and to ensure a 'runway' pose. Even the most beautiful costume, if it's badly photographed, can't be used as a logo.

Just for clarification on another issue:
Compliments and encouragements from fellow contestants and DOA members during the contest are welcomed. Critiques (saying what you like and don't like about a costume) are not permitted until after the challenge has ended.

      Thanks!

    6. I was wondering if there was a low-tech way to approximate a green screen, then realized that in this wonderful Intarweb Age, I need not wonder long. I found this spiffy tutorial on YouTube. Scaled down to doll size, it should be even cheaper and easier to do.

See? I have already learned something in this round!

My inspirations were basically various vibrant tropical flowers, passionflower and trumpet flower and royal poinciana. I made the pattern for the dress with a sort of flamenco-style bell skirt and a sleeveless bodice. I then beaded lots and lots of scallops to add to the ruffled hem on the skirt, a diamond flower accent for the bodice, and the stamens for the passionflower hairpiece (the orange petals are from a silk flower I had in my craft stash). The shoes are keychain ballet flats from Ardene, not made by me.

    10. kcurry9 - Just position your doll against a solid background (doesn't have to be a green screen), strike a pose (with or without a stand) and make sure the lightening is good. I don't think we'll have many professional photographers entering the challenge. You have as good a chance to win as anybody! Please don't be discouraged!

Adarhysenthe will be doing the photoshopping so you don't have to worry about it.

    14. Calling all designers!

Don't miss out on this new and truly exciting challenge! This is a chance to put your imagination, inspiration, creative nature and design skills to the test!

We've purposely left the interpretation open and we're hoping to get a wide range of wonderful costumes, from full length gowns and swanky pants outfits to slinky short dresses and everything in between! The gents can show off high fashion designs including classic suits and maybe even tuxes!

And your doll will become the official 'spokesperson' for Project Runway! How exciting is that, to have a photo of your doll featured in every future challenge? He/she will become a legend in their own time! LOL!

Don't miss this opportunity to shine and show your design skills to 'the world'!

This contest is important to us and we hope to all our designers. We welcome former contestants back and look forward to new designers entering!

Entry! - The Child Prodigy -
It took me a little while to decide the best way to make a child look glitzy and glamorous without the generic branding of being the kid of a wealthy celebrity. After a good bit of thought, I decided a little performing artist should be born, and he's dressed to impress on the eve of his piano recital in Carnegie Hall... After, of course, the interviews and photographs are taken.
My costume colors and design were based off the peacock feather; rich in color, but light and airy.
I made all parts except the hat base (I picked it up at my local craft store but I added all the details myself) and his boots.

      My Entry:

I wanted something fun, flirty and sassy to suit the personality of Sookie, my CP Luts Delf Juri 2006. The dress is Thai silk taffeta with a lined fitted corset style bodice with a drop waist and a short puffle (puffy ruffle) skirt. It closes in the back with a zipper.

I knitted the arm warmers for this outfit with black embroidery thread. I also made the snowflake obsidian necklace, but prior to this challenge. It was borrowed for this occasion from one of my other dolls. The boots, fishnet tights and wig were not made by me, just selected and/or purchased for the outfit.

Since I ran out of time and daylight, the photos had to be taken with flash, so my usual photographic fail becomes epic fail with flash, sorry. Anyhoo, for what it's worth, here it is:

My dress was designed with movement on the runway in mind. The gown was mostly machine sewn out of two colors of a very pretty type of chiffon. I wanted a neutral color for the body of the gown and chose the silvery gray to match my model's face-up. The bodice was hand-pleated and the gown is fully lined. I added a slit on the left side to mid thigh under the burgundy drape to provide a glimpse of my model's leg as she walks to add a bit of sexiness, while still being age appropriate (my model is 15). The drape is attached at the waist on the front with a decorative button to provide some extra glitz. It's also attached at the shoulder and allowed to hang free in the back for extra movement. I made the shoes out of sculpey, metallic ribbon, and silver acrylic paint and added a matching ribbon in my model's hair to complete the look.

    33. As a few of you may have noticed, I've been fairly quiet the last couple weeks. I am not quitting BJD Project Runway by any means; however, I am currently in the middle of a out-of-state move. I will be scarce for the bulk of this challenge month, so please refer all questions to the wonderful Elfmoon (and please give her lots of love for taking on the whole contest for awhile--she's amazing!). I will be back in time to judge our most exciting challenge, if not sooner, barring unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances. Thank you all for your patience and Make It Work! :)

    40. Lovely inspirations! Prosaically, I am being inspired/directed by the yarn I'm using, which is actually rayon and metallic crochet thread and difficult (for me) to handle. I'm also inspired by the spring trend of corals and pinks, which I find fresh and happy-making. I'm shooting for a simple silhouette that I hope will be both rich and light ... youthful glam.

    43. I have the basic silhouette planned, but I'm still trying to work out the detail for the bodice. I bought my fabrics and notions last weekend and expect to start the sewing in the next few days. I'm going to try a few things outside my comfort zone - setting a zipper (because it's the only way I can get the silhouette right), incorporating bling (to add the glitz and glamour), and trying to construct shoes out of sculpy (my girl has no appropriate shoes). We'll see how these things come together. The zipper scares me the most.

    44. Don't let the zipper intimidate you! There's directions on the packet and a dress zipper is the easiest kind to install. There's no overlapping like a jeans zipper. It's basically just a seam with a zipper inserted. I'll bet you could go on Youtube and find a video of how to do it! As long as the zipper is sown in evenly, it should turn out fine!

      Good luck!

    47. This puts me in mind of the maaaaany times different PR contestants have sewn/stapled/glued/taped their garments on their models. (The most recent that I can recall being Michael Costello using double-sided tape to keep his model from flashing the judges.)

I am starting a big do-over. This seems to be a trend with me. But since I don't sketch, I find myself relying on what the materials will (or will not) do to determine the shape of the garment.

(And kinda off topic, but I just have to brag ... a dear family friend is currently in NYC, doing hair at Fashion Week! Yesterday he called my mother from Mood and asked her if she wanted anything.)

    49. After conferring with Adara we have come to this decision: Tape, staples and gluing are not allowed, however sewing the garment around the doll is.

Be aware, however, that you will loose points in the aesthetics category. As an alternative we recommend the use of zipper or smaller eyelets laced with thread instead of ribbon. The closer the laces, snaps or buttons to each other, the less gaps there will be.

Yes, in this case, you can change the color of the shoes.

    55. I'm afraid I don't have fabrics suitable for anything but casual clothes, cotton prints and knits that are cute for doll clothes but not red carpet worthy; that's why I ordered the silks and planned the dress specifically for them. So, if they don't arrive soon, I'm sunk.

    58. Yes, it arrived yesterday. One fabric is exactly what I wanted, but I'm rather disappointed in the color of the other one. I'm pondering what to do - use it, try to find a last minute replacement or redesign for one color.

    60. Yay, kcurry9, that your fabric got there! Shades of Andy!

Guys, I am going to take a blowtorch to my garment. So, so frustrated. Seriously. If I ever think about using this rayon yarn again, slap me upside the head. It is like trying to knit with Teflon.

That said, I am starting all over again, and using lace-weight wool, so unless I turn into a speed knitter, I am gonna need that extension.
