PROJECT RUNWAY - The Bohemian Rhapsody Challenge - Game 9 ~ WINNERS POSTED

Nov 10, 2011

      PROJECT RUNWAY GAME 9

      THE BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY CHALLENGE

      CONCEPT:
In this challenge, we’re looking for clothing reminiscent of the Boho style that has enjoyed sporadic popularity for the last hundred years or so. You can Google ‘Boho clothing’ and find examples of the style. It is/was mostly worn by Gypsy tribes and enjoyed a resurgence during the 1960’s and 1970’s when it was aopted by the ‘hippie’ movement, when the girls wore brightly colored dresses and the boys wore bell bottom pants. Features included "floaty" skirts, furry gilets, embroidered tunics, cropped jackets, large faux-coin belts, strappy sandels, baggy cardigans,"hobo bags” and big floppy hats.

      CHALLENGE:
We’re emphasizing the use of color, bright and bold, and a style that represents social freedom and personal expression. We’re looking for unconventional costumes with a mix of styles that complement each other. The costume can be wild, romantic, reminisce of a bygone era or whatever your imagine dictates.

      RULES:
One of the fabrics used must be an in scale print or a ‘tie dyed’ fabric, which can be purchased. We don’t expect our designers to dye their own material.
The costume must include two accessories. As an example a hat, purse/bag, scarf, leg warmers, etc.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
Entries can be posted any time between now and Dec 1[SUP]st[/SUP].
The dead line for posting entries is Dec 1[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will start on Dec 1[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will end on Dec 31[SUP]st[/SUP]at 11:59 PM, PST.
48 hour extensions will be from Dec 31[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST until Jan 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.
Winners will be posted on or about Jan 14[SUP]th[/SUP].

      PHOTOS:
Your entry must contain 5 photos: full length photo of front, full length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages) and a glamour photo that may include props. These photos must be in your entry, not in a separate post. Design concepts and progress photos can be in a separate post. Photos are not judged, but please make sure they are clear and taken in good lightening.
Due to the problem we’re having with posting the winning photos, all photos must be 480 x640. That way all entry photos will be uniform in size.
      PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE!

    10. I was asked a question by PM and decided to answer it here as it may help our designers understand the challenge concept.

Although the Boho sytle was adopted by the Hippie culture, it is not exclusive to that era. It had been around for centuries and became widely popular during the late 1800's.

Costumes with Hippie trappings, such as peace signs, fabric that looks like the American flag, or other obvious references are not what we're looking for in this challenge.

Here is the final result! I had alot of fun with the contest and will probably do more of them in the future :) In addition to being my first try at a contest, this was also my first attempt at shoes, wig, and face-up. I haven't done much photography yet either so the pictures aren't quite right despite hours of messing with my camera. It's not perfect but for being my first try at a lot of things I'm pretty happy with it. The idea for the outfit is loosly based on the style of some of my hula hooping hippie friends.

      SUBMISSION
      Theme is "
Bohemian Winter Couture" inspired by Dr. Zhivago movie (the original). The pants don't need the belt to stay on, but I had hoped it would add a bit of Russian flare with the frilly tie-up belt... Please don't laugh at the oven-mitts, but the fabric was not sewing friendly at all and bjd hands are not the easiest to sew for LOL

    25. Elfmoon, I notice Kitty Blue already put her entry on page one where she had a post-holding spot.:) She entered a lilac skin Resinsoul mini. This makes it extra fun for me because my Resinsoul is lilac too...it will be fascinating to see totally different designs from this challenge on two such uniquely colored dolls. Also, ukelala entered a "sugar skull" faceup like I did and it will be fun to see how they interpret the challenge as well. Not to mention all the other wonderful dolls entered. This challenge promises to be very interesting indeed! Good luck everyone!

    30. Well I think I've got my materials down. My main colors seem to have become blue and orange.

The material is recycled from a thrifted skirt, and will become a minidress. I haven't decided which beads I'm using yet, but I want to do both a necklace and a bracelet. The orange-pink-gold yarn is going to become a crocheted shawl, and one of the crochet threads (leaning towards white) will become trim on the dress. The orange tulle will probably be a petticoat under the dress. I'm not 100% sure on that, I'll need to see how it looks, but I like the idea of the orange peeking out.

The dress will be fairly easy but I can't decide on a neckline! I need to whip up some sample trims out of the crochet thread and see how it will go. The recycled fabric is just the perfect length, and I love the printed border on the bottom.

    40. cowpewter, I am impressed with your skillz (yes, with a 'z'). One day I will learn how to crochet, but first I need to learn how to sew without re-sewing a pair of pants 15 times :(
Darn the pants, darn them to the blackest pit!!!

elfmoon, I will ask for the extension as well - it's the pant's fault, I swear it!! That, and I just realized 31st falls on Saturday and I am working this week :(

The game will actually start on Feb. 1st, so people will have from the day the challenge is posted until Feb 1st to sign up, about two weeks.

As soon as you see the thread for the next game, you can join.

    42. sephydoll, aw thanks! I'm not super good at crochet, I can't really do garment shaping yet just basic patterns. The shawl is just a pretty lacey rectangle. And pants are hard! Especially when you get to the end and realize they can't sit down without them gaping/riding down.

      elfmoon

    43. Yes, I always end up with the plumber crack (I love calling it that) or I just have no clue what to do with the zipper part since I don't have zippers that are small enough and the little snaps always stick out too much for me :(

    44. If you take a crotch measurement you will never have plumbers crack again.

If your doll is an SD you can buy the correct size zipper at 'tinyzippers.com', or you can make a false fly with an elastic waistband.

    45. Oh thank you so much!! I will try that method for sure. It's just hard for me to follow any patterns (even the simplest ones) I just go with the flow, usually >.< I am sewing the pants right at this moment, and started following a pant pattern but wanted mine to be a bit baggier and all of a sudden I realized I am completely off the pattern track... I am trying to follow this pattern here

Too late for the zippers at this point, but I will bookmark the site for next time :)

    46. @cowpeter- your shawl is pretty! For as long as I've been sewing, there are two things I fail at- crochet/knitting, and embroidery. I am jealous of your skills. XD

@sephydoll- don't feel bad about the pants, I just made some spandex stretch pants from one of my tried-and-true patterns, and I'm still getting plumber's crack. I think the slippery resin is to blame. DX

also, he's holding a muskrat(?) skull we bought from a small animal hunter at a flea market. I really don't know how one can make a living trapping animals smaller than a housecat, but it's best not to ask those kinds of questions in rural Pennsylvania.

    47. Please remember that you're not allowed to use commerical patterns. You must create your own patterns, or use a pattern free method like Sephydoll is doing.

Most patterns have to be altered, so you you can use them as a base, but something like using a Barbie pattern straight from the envelope is not allowed.

    48. Ahaha, didn't mean to confuse- I make all my own patterns, and the particular one I was using was a pants pattern I've been using for about three years. Most of the pants I've made for any of my 70cm boys came from some alteration of it, but apparently it's not going to work for stretch pants. :sweat

    49. I have made pants using this tutorial before and on the first one I avoided crack by making the pants to sit at the doll's waist rather than his hips but having them close loosely. That way when he sits down the pants have enough extra fabric to be pulled down without showing crack. For the other pair I wanted the pants to sit lower, so I put two darts in the back. About 1/2 way down on page 8 is the post I worked from when doing darts for my boy.

    51. Thanks everyone for all the advice :D I still feel I am such a long way to go before any of my pants look semi-decent, but at least I am almost done with somewhat presentable looking pants for the challenge hehehe

    53. I am sorry but I will have to withdraw from the contest. Hubby had surgery before Christmas and with the holiday preparations and him requiring extra attention, I have not been able to apply myself to the task of costume making.

    55. Regretfully I will not be able to complete the project. I was quite happy with the chance to participate once again, but failed to fully prepare for the challenge. I hope to join again in the future.
