      PROJECT RUNWAY GAME 8

      THE PUMPKIN PATCH PARTY CHALLENGE

      CONCEPT:
Mr. Letz Party is hosting his annual Pumpkin Patch celebration at his Beverly Hills mansion and you’reinvited! He’s well known for this extravagant event and it’s quite an honor for you to attend. He expects his guests to wear only the best costumes and he awards ribbons for what he feels are the best three outfits. Too bad he doesn’t award prizes, but if he did that he wouldn’t be the rich, penny pinching billionaire that he is! LOL! This is the social event of the season, so don’t miss out!

      CHALLENGE:
Each contestant is required to create a costume of their choice. It can be anything from cute and funny to spooky and bizarre. We’re looking for unique and imitative designs, so update, put a new twist on a favorite theme, or go for a totally new approach.

      RULES:
Each costume must include a treat container and either a head or a face item made by you and not purchased. Treat container can be a bag, sack, pumpkin, bucket or anything that’s capable of holding treats. Head item can be a hat, crown, horns, ears, halo, etc. Face item can be a mask, glasses, nose, beard, etc.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged onthe following:
      Interpretation of the challenge
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
Entry forms can be posted anytime before Oct 1[SUP]st[/SUP]. The deadline for posting entry forms is Oct 1[SUP]st[/SUP]at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will begin on Oct. 1 end on Oct 31[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.
48 hour extensions will befrom Oct. 31[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM until Nov 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] at 11:59 PM,PST.
Winners will be posted on Nov 14[SUP]th[/SUP].

      PHOTOS:
Your entry must contain 5 photos: full length photo of front, full length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages) and a glamour photo that may include props. These photos must be in your entry, not in a separate post. Design concepts and progress photos can be in a separate post. Photos are not judged, but please make sure they are clear and taken in good lightening.

Due to the problem we’re having with posting the winning photos, all photos must be 480 x640. That way all entry photos will be uniform in size.
      PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE!

    6. Can we do both a treat container and a headpiece/mask? And just for clarification this is for a costume AND a treat container or headpiece/mask?

ETA: One more question, can we use some store bought items, like say Halloween costume wings, for parts of the costume, not the treat container or headpiece/mask?

      • Funny
      • Winner
      • Creative
    7. Yes, the challenge is to make a outfit and a treat container, with an additional accessory of either a head or a face item. So the entire costume would be 3 pieces. As an example: A clown costume consisting of clown suit, treat container and hat. If you'd like to add a 4th item, in this case a clown nose, you can.

No purchased accessories are allowed in any challenge except shoes, socks, underware, nylon stockings and slips. Purchased jewelry can also be worn unless it's stated in the challenge that jewelry must be hand made. So, no wings unless they're hand made. Then they would be considered part of the costume. Does that make sense?

    8. So, what's the rule on deconstructed items? Eg: Say I go the store and buy a human sized mask so that I can use the material to make a mask or prop for my doll. Or, I buy a set of human wings and then use the feathers for a dress or mask.

      • Funny
      • Winner
      • Creative
    9. Doll masks are generally made from paper, paper mache, cloth or some kind of clay. I don't know what kind of human mask you're thinking of, latex perhaps, but if you can cut it up and create your own mask out of it then it's hand made.

In the case of wings, you would be required to form a base out of wire, or what have you, and attach the feathers yourself. Where the feathers come from, whether they're recycled from an old boa, purchased loose or what ever, is up to you.

      Official Entry:

The idea behind this costume is that Sara is an adult who is invited to a party thrown by Mr. Letz Party - the local, wealthy, eccentric man - and so she is in a costume while still dressed appropriately for a swanky party at a mansion. And just in case the detail photo doesn't tip you off, I did make the shoes. I also made the bo (it was a dowel that I cut to the right length and stained, so i guess that counts as "making").

      SUBMISSION:

\o/ woohoo, I have made it!!
Theme of the costume is "The Frog Prince" and it was inspired by the fairy tale of same name and fantastic Alice in Wonderland. I had a thought, "what if Mr. Frog was in Alice's Wonderland?" and this came out of it LOL
Items that are either sewn or sewn & glued by me: the crown, the shirt, jacket, pants, goodies bag, glove.
The eyes are red buttons with some funky blue-green freckles (you can't see all that well); the funky leaf prop was sewn up from fabric leaves.

Fallen Angel, sculpted the horns and wings (the first wings i made did not work at all!) but i like the way these turned out, looking more like bloody bones. made his clothes then had lots of fun slinging paint all over hehe! made his kitty goody bag (he loves it, he is not a bad guy, just likes to play one on Halloween!) did NOT make the pumpkin, just used it for fun in the pictures. his cuts and red eye are red electrical tape, his hair is scraps of faux fur. this was fun, thanks! everyone's looks great so far! :)

    20. A word to our designers. We're looking for costumes that are different and imaginative, containing some element that sets it aside from the 'stock' image.

For example if you're planning a pirate costume make sure it's not 'traditional'. A copy of Johnny Depp, while appealing, is not unique.

Please remember the key words from the challenge ~ 'a new take on an old theme'!

      Good luck everyone!

Mookie is on the left with the flowered shirt

We are finally done. Mookie was agreeable to humoring me by dressing him in the hippie garb of a bygone decade (that would be the 1960s to the young uns' who were not around back then). He was also very patient about hanging around nekkid while I fitted and refitted his tiny togs.

For the head/face part of the challenge, I made both his hair and his mustache. I guess tieing a ribbon around his head for a headband doesn't count as "making".

I also made his jeans and T shirt but his sandals were purchased.

He is wearing his back pack/treat container in the picture with the background but you can only see the shoulder straps of it.

    27. I'm curious of something, so before i enter i thought i'd ask.
Does it have to be traditional Halloween style?
Every year there are certain staples, such as cats, witches, vampires, werewolves, pirates etc, and staple colors such as black, red, orange, and purple.

Is it recommended to stick closer to traditional Halloween or is it open to all extravagance that the imagination can muster?

    28. The challenge is defiantly NOT limited to traditional Halloween costumes or colors.

We highly encourage designers to think beyond the standard costumes and envision something truly unique. You are only limited by your imagination!

    52. I've somewhat started but I foresee a change in the direction withing the next few days LOL I'm having trouble narrowing it down >.<
And I am challenging myself outside my comfort zone - to sew for a 5 yr old O.o

So yeah, this should be fun :)

    53. I'm not one of those lovely people who draw out all the details of their designs in advance. I'm more a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants person when it comes to creativity. I'll toss a pile of interesting fabrics onto the table and demand of them, "Okay, speak to me!" And right now a lovely piece of bright orange silk has the loudest voice and is declaring itself the jumping off point for the Pumpkin Queen. Now, I don't know if ordinary pumpkin patches have a queen, but the silk is declaring that it's absolutely true.;) You know how we've all seen those funny kids' costumes with the big round pumpkin bodies and green stem hats?...well, my twist is to see if I can take that basic concept and glam it up to make it beautiful and unique.:)

    55. I have a pretty clear design concept...no sketches yet. I plan to have Sara come as Donatello, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Here's the twist: she's still dressed to go to a swanky party. So the idea involves a long green kimono style dress with a low belt with a "D" buckle, purple bands around her arms and legs, a purple mask, a turtle shell bag (for candy), and a bo. See? Turtle and fancy dress. :D

    56. Cupricyo_ladany ~ No, you don't have to make a new costume. Because of the misunderstanding, you finished your costume and posted your photos before the contest even started, but that's okay. We will accept your entry.

Everything is fine, so don't worry about anything. Everything is good!

Todo está muy bien. ¡No se preocupe! Hemos aceptado su traje.
Usted no tiene que hacer un traje nuevo, o tome más fotografías.

I used an online translator. I hope my message makes sense!

    59. I have too many ideas and I wonder if any one of them will pan out (as always). I was thinking 'my little pony' since my Bygg is an Unicorn... but not sure if that will happen.

I'm also debating between going really cute or do something crazy LOL

    60. I have some really cool yarn that I'm working on knitting an entire kinda frilly fairy outfit. If I can't get it all done I'll make something up.
