so, for clarity can you name the 8 planets available to set our design on? I know there have been some official changes in what's a planet and what is not, but I am not up to date. I figure getting a list should cover everyone's future questions about eligible planets.

Anastasia gives you a look of pity and welcomes you to the New Horizons Colony on Pluto, known to its residents as New Hell.

In order to terraform Pluto, scientists created a nuclear reaction in its moon, Charon, to create a second sun. This resulted in an extremely hot, dry, windless planet without seasonal changes. The surface is rocky with no sand, water, or vegetation. Nuclear and electromagnetic interference from Charon fries all electrical components, so the colony is very low tech. New Horizons is a corporate colony with the primary purpose of making money for its investors and colonists are paid in company rations. The colony has a rigid caste system based on job classification, with the lowest rank being the laborers. Residents live in a combination of caves, depleted mines, and tents. The primary industry is mining a lucrative element named charonite for export to Earth. A secondary industry is textile production.

Clothing is all made on planet from special silk harvested from genetically engineered silk worms that are among the only form of life flourishing on Pluto. Fabrics are dyed with pigments created from crushed insects. The majority of this fabric is transported to Earth where it is a rare and expensive luxury flouted by the rich and famous as a status symbol. Yet on Pluto, the same fabrics are worn by the rank and file laborers. However there is variation in the complexity of the fabrics with trims and patterns only available to those with higher rank. Therefore, clothing on Pluto is also a way to show status.

Without manufacturing capabilities, clothing is hand made but tailoring isn't a money making venture so resources aren’t “wasted” on custom tailoring. Clothing is designed with a “one size fits most” mentality and closes with belts and ties to adjust for different sizes. Even the soft-soled boots for gripping the terrain and gloves to protect hands are made to one size and tied for adjustability. Lack of manufacturing also means simple closures rather than zippers, elastic, etc.

Clothing is simple and generally loose and thin for ease of movement and to stay cool, but covers the entire body for sun protection. Head scarves are made of a darker fabric to cut the sun's glare. Colonists also wear masks to capture the moisture from their breath and help minimize dehydration. Once inside, coats are removed and clothing is intended to not hamper movement when mining – hence the close fitting and sleeveless shirts. A large number of colonists come from heavily populated regions on Earth such as India and China and some of that influence can be seen in the clothing.


Anastasia is a mechanical engineer whose primary responsibilities involve traveling between different locations of the colony and obtaining data. Her elaborate clothing shows that she is a member of a higher caste and not a laborer.

Looking long and hard for a home of their own Nyesis and her people have traveled the solar system. Attracted by the distance and the beauty of Uranus they have looked at the potential of the planet and decided that this is where they were going to settle. Combating first the sheer cold of the planet they have set up domes cities to control the climate of their living environment. A community of mainly scientists they did not take long to adjust to their new home and all it had to offer. They now debate over who to allow to come mine for many of the precious metals and gems they have discovered in their studies of the planet.
Nyesis is an advanced scientist in the community shown by the addition of the beads on her uniform. The addition of the color shows that she has permission to go anywhere in the community and also has the ability to go out beyond the cities to some of the remote research facilities. Her identity disk always on her belt as is the case with all citizens to prevent the intrusion of outsiders into their community. The other device on her belt is a specially engineered light source for some of her outer excursions.
The uniforms of the community are constructed of the leather hides of native creatures that they have found. These hides seem to have the natural ability to help the wearer regulate their temperature a bit to help battle the different temps of some of the research rooms and for when they go outside the community.
Maybe sometime in the future the cities will multiply with the addition of more agriculture and mining to the planets exports. For the time being though the citizens enjoy the quiet peace they have found from others due to the harsh climate of their chosen home.

ENTRY:

Uranus is a planet consisting mainly of ice and rock, making the terrain very rough and mountainous with large plains of ice between mountain peaks. It has strong winds as well, making it a very cold planet to reside on. Its inhabitants dwell in caves or small tents. Because of the inhospitable climate, Uranus’ inhabitants tend to travel, following their prey. Some residents, however, will dwell in caves, tents, and huts. Industry consists of mining for precious stones and fur and meat trade. The people and extraterrestrial beings that live on Uranus rely on trade with other planets because the cold climate prevents crop plant growth. Therefore, they must rely on other planets for vegetation to balance their diets from primarily carnivorous.

My doll is representing a human living on Uranus, but the extraterrestrial beings would wear similar clothing because it protects the wearer from the climate. I feel that my outfit represents life on Uranus because it’s made out of fleece (warm materials are a must on a cold planet) and faux fur (representing the fur of a native beast that was used in clothing). The mask would protect the inhabitant’s face from frostbite caused by the wind. The baggy pants allow for movement, but also allow flesh-to-flesh contact of the wearer’s legs to conduct more body heat. The hood-hat-scarf is another means of frostbite protection, covering up the wearer’s head, neck, and ears. The fleece shirt’s cuffs are lined with native beast fur, as well as the fur boots, to keep hands and feet extra warm as natives travel around the rough terrain of the planet.

Description of the terrain, atmospheric & living conditions:
There are 4 distinct terrains:
I. The uninhabitable North and South poles that are covered in ice and the temperature reaches as low as –150°C when the sun doesn’t reach the area. The two ice masses take up majority of the planet.
II. Both poles are surrounded by mostly uninhabitable gigantic mountains and cliffs four times as high as the Himalayas; both mountain ranges form two "rings" around the planet, protecting it’s “belt”, the ocean.
III. The ocean is dispersed with four major land masses (the slums).
IV. And there are six major ‘floating’ land masses (the orbiters)

The atmosphere on Saturn is quite like that on Earth – the air is breathable and since the planet is so large and only a small part of it is actually inhabited, although quite crowded, the pollution is not a
problem. The main stain on planet Saturn are the slums. Half the size of Earth’s terrain, the slums are over crowded, resembling New York City and Tokyo - all fertile land converted to megacities – it is one big
concrete jungle (or 4 concrete jungles). There are a few patches of rocky terrain and some trees and plant life scattered around. Animals and even some plants are ferocious (especially ocean life). Because the
slums are so low in between the cliffs and mountains, the climate consists of a lot of rain and little sun, resulting in a somewhat cold climate averaging to about 18°C per year (think of London, and England in
general). Even the vicious winds often tearing throughout the sea belt do not disperse the fog that has settled there almost permanently. Most inhabitants (about 80%) living in the slums are poor or lower
middle class. They are ‘ruled’ by numerous warlords (crime lords). Life is not easy and wealthier people (the warlords) hire body guards or entourage to protect them.
The six floating cities (orbiters) are pretty much the same, only the majority of population is wealthy (super rich) and cities are very well taken care of. Since they reach further in the sky, the terrain absorbs
more sun, making it on average, a little warmer at 23°C per year. Life is quite easy and lazy for majority of inhabitants here.

The main industry: Main industry is mining of gaseous like spheres/balls that are constantly created deep within planet’s core and expelled up toward the openings in the crust – most ending up in caves;
however, it is not unheard of a sphere found floating in the air. Spheres are used primarily as weapons, more correctly, they are used together with a weapon to alter the way a weapon behaves; making it
stronger or for example turning a bulled into an explosive light combustor. Spheres can also be used in medicine and varied other purposes. Other large industries are slave trading, bounty hunting, and sea
harvesting.

Anything else you would like us to know concerning your planet: Over the years, other life forms have started to emigrate and visit Saturn, so even though it is mostly inhabited by humans, there are other species / humanoids that can be seen. Also, slavery is quite acceptable on Saturn, and is slowly becoming the #1 industry. Most slaves are owned by inhabitants on the orbiters and most slaves come from the slums. Inhabitants get around by super vehicles, or either by air mobiles or air buses (to go between the orbiters, slums, and some accessible parts of the mountains.

You must also give an explanation of how/why you feel your costume represents the overall conditions of your planet: The costume is typical to the inhabitants of the slums because the materials are crude, but breathable and rubber like, making them ideal for rough terrain when searching for the spheres, when in combat (or escape), or simply told to do some menial labour by a wealthy individual. The colours usually chosen are grey to blend in with the fog to make it easier to hide from an attack (animal or otherwise) but the use of reflective material (enhanced by special kind of compound from a sphere) is designed to absorb heat and keep the body warm and is very cheap to make.

[FONT=&quot]Pluto is a planet full of rock and ice; there is little wind with next to no seasons outside of cold and not much living outside of the human compounds, minus the mutated polar bears. The people who live on Pluto are military apart of the Universe Starship Forces. They live mostly in one domed section of Pluto, the side where Charon lights the sky. There are a few compounds on the rest of the planet, but they are mainly used for emergencies and the planets main industry – comet hunting. Comets are captured before they enter the rest of the solar system and are melted down for the materials inside. To create this heat source needed in this dark region of space especially to melt something so cold, a different approach had to be taken. In keeping with its namesake, Pluto trades with other planets the materials from the comets for the fuel of human remains to burn as their heat source.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]My doll is a member of the Nebulioan Plutoian Starship Comet Melting Forces in which everything she wears is dealing with either the extreme cold from the planet or extreme heat from the comet melting. The pants are made of a lightweight material that is designed, by the military, to keep a person’s body temperature to normal no matter what the outside conditions are. The metallic material reflects back heat from the comet melting process and is extremely strong for holding different tools and dealing with hot metals. For the heat, the shirt is short sleeved, but is made out of a similar material as the pants and the belt is designed to be wide to protect major internal organs in case of an accident while working with the comets.

Just checking a time thing: We have about a week from today to make the outfit, yes? Trying to get a timeframe down, lol. XD

 

You have a month to make the outfit. You're not supposed to start working on it until 6/1. When the timeline says entries are due by June 1, that means the deadline for people to sign up to enter this month's contest. That way people know what the challenge is and have time to decide whether or not to enter and what doll to use, but then everyone starts work on the same day to make it more fair. You have the entire month of June to make it, just post your entry pictures before the last day of the month ends (basically 11:59 PM on June 30th - this thread mentions June 31st, but there's only 30 days in June). The judges will then have two weeks to critique and choose the winners (July 14). Then the next challenge will be announced for people to sign up, but the actual sewing will start August 1. Entrants will then have the entire month of August to work on the next challenge, and so on and so on.

So each challenge is basically 2 weeks for people to sign up once the theme is announced, a month for the actual designing and sewing, and 2 weeks for judging.

Hello, my name is Alethia, and I live on Mercury, the hottest tourist attraction in the solar system! I am a seventh-generation genetically enhanced human; a Mercurian, born right here at the Borealis Prime resort... one of many lovely places to visit here in the Northern Polar Settlement.

Though the majority of Mercury's surface is uninhabitable, the deep craters in the polar regions, shielded from direct sunlight, turned out to be an ideal place to set up the original mining colonies. Since the discovery of water ice at the bottom of the deepest crater basins, and because the gravity is so close to Earth-normal, The original terraforming projects were quite simple. With the abundant solar energy and new Stattsfeld "Ionic Molecular Inversion" technology, fill the basins with breathable atmosphere, kept in place by powerful magnetic-field generators near the craters' edge. Within each basin the weather is controlled by reflected sunlight, so we can pretty much live in an ideal climate... all year round!

Mining certainly paid off for my family. Though dangerous, mining on Mercury yields an abundance of precious metals: gold, platinum, irridium, and many more. The constant heat-flux also generates many unusual alloys that are extremely rare. That's why, even though we have a very small population here, we can afford to create such a "tourist Utopia". After all, there are only two main industries here: you're either a miner, or you offer the visitors here whatever service they desire.

I'm a little too fragile for mining... not to mention that I don't like being underground! I'm happy to be what you would call an "entertainer" here at Borealis Prime. I suppose it's similar to the "geisha" of Earth history; I sing, I dance, I... show people how to have the best of times here in our beautiful basin.

You may have noticed my facial tattoos! I am indeed a third-tier Hostess, first ranked. We all start off with one dot for each eye, after our training period; but I'm climbing the ranks quite swiftly, and just earned my first stripe! Someday I hope to make it to Crown-VII status, and start my own house. Until then I live here at the resort, and take care of the visitors' needs when I'm not on stage.

Whenever I have time off, I enjoy skydiving from Central Pillar, there in the middle of Borealis Lake, with all the tourists. Even if you don't have natural wings like mine (a fairly common genetic trait for Mercurians, since our original settlers' enhancement), you can always rent a parachute or steam-pak. I love to glide, spiral down on the thermals, and feel the fresh breeze up there... followed by a quick dip in the Lake. I also like to hike up the Eastern Rim to enjoy the view of the natural "fireworks", lol... it keeps my natural red skin healthy to get a little refracted radiation once in a while, and I don't get much sun down in the casinos. I also love to dance, even when off-duty!

So come visit me here in the richest place in the solar system! Make sure you wear something thin... we keep the Borealis Basin quite tropical, unlike the chilly Wagner Crater at the southern pole. I'll make sure you have a hot time!

Mars has not been terraformed for long. Most of Mars is still fairly uninhabitable. It started out as a joint nation colony of scientists sent up to make it earthlike, but then some of the nations broke off and sent their own people up. Some nations made deals with some of their less violent criminals, pardons for going to mars. So Mars is currently inhabited by a mix of scientists, frontiers people, and criminals. About a decade into the terraforming of Mars war broke out on Earth, so the Mars colonies are basically abandoned to their own devices at this point. Most of the technology on Mars is still tasked to terrraform it, so most of the enclaves are fairly primitive. Though much is made f metal, because what trees they have cannot be cut down for wood, there is limited electricity and only rudimentary running water and climate control, except in the science colonies and what remains of the ships sent to Mars. There haven’t been any new ships arriving in several decades.
During terraforming and the decades of conflict after the war started on earth, it was found that lizards and other desert dwelling animals adapted best to the current climate on Mars, that of a vast desert. There are Polar ice caps, and some large bodies of water, but given that they are in the extreme Polar Regions, not much can live near them. Most of the water is underground. The colonists have been able to get flax and some cotton to grow as well. A couple of species of large herbivorous lizards have been bred to serve as a food source and a source of materials. When the troubles started, a couple countries ordered their colonies to sabotage the others, so they released some of the nastier apex predators from earth. These predators and what remains of the criminal element are the main threats, other than the environment, to survival.
Most of the colonists started as scientists, and 1/3 to ½ still are. They almost never leave the science stations or ships. The other major occupations are farmers, herders, hunters, and, because about 5% of the population turned to raiding, guards. The standard clothing on Mars is a “shipsuit”—the insulated/thermal/cooling long underwear that was worn under the encounter suits on the voyage to Mars and the earliest days before the air was breathable. These are about the only truly technologically advanced things everyone on Mars has, because the science stations still produce them regularly. Shipsuits are made of a smart polymer. Over the shipsuits, most people wear many layers of loose clothes, with buttons and ties as the fasteners. The fabric is generally loose woven cottons and linens dyed to blend in with the surroundings. They also wear boots made of the skins of the lizards they use as food. Most clothing, other than the shipsuits, is somewhat one-size-fits-all, becahse they haven’t the facilities or resources to make custom clothing, thus how people wear the same items denotes what they are.
Andre is a guard and hunter, thus he usually wears his wrap pants tucked down his boots and wrappings on his boots. He also usually wears the under scarf on his head pulled across his face.

my idea is the earth became too over - populated so as the other planets became colonized you choose which planet you would like to live on like you choose which state/neighborhood you want to live, based on what that planet's living conditions are like.

Jupiter is a gas planet, not solid, has magnetic fields, windy and almost constant lightning storms (think that is about right from what i read, but going with that concept for my idea).

Jupiter is an extremely clean planet, thanks to the constant supply of energy in the air, human bodies act like living rechargeable batteries, no need for other fuel, touching any electrical machine, appliance, computer, phone, etc. to charge and supply energy.

houses use the magnetic fields to hover so homes can look like traditional earth style homes or giant spheres, just limited by imagination and funds. since the homes are so easy to move it is common to just move your entire home instead of buying a new one.

since the planet is not solid, people rely on magnetic flight to get around, magnets placed on/inside clothing to push and pull against Jupiter's magnetic fields to direct yourself and wings used to steer in the windy conditions. like on earth, everyone has their own style, my girl is young and artistic so she has a more whimsical look, but magnetic suits and styles can be sleek and discreet for a business man, playful and colorful for children, as diverse as clothing on earth, although clothes are commonly made close - fitting to prevent lag in the windy conditions, and with some kind of rubber to absorb and disperse the constant electricity in the air. wings are treated like cars on earth, personalized and customized.

Entry:

Jupiter is a gaseous planet with magnetic dust in the atmosphere,
but it has a rocky core with heavier and solid elements.
The rocky core is covered with deep layers of solid metallic-icy hydrogen.
In these layers, lives a colony named Vurkie'Sha.
The outer layer of Jupiter is a desert that has a lot of big anticyclone magnetic storms,
which makes the ground is a challenge to live in.
So the Vurkie (the creatures of Vurkie'Sha) lives underground in a enormous dome,
known as Dome-Vur (looks like an igloo), surrounded by icy hydrogen.
Inside Dome-Vur lies many buildings, mostly in square shapes.

Their source of energy come from an icy crystals that grow deep in the core.
The crystals are consumed every time they are used.
That's why mining is one of the two main industries in Vurkie'Sha.
The miners works to retrieve the icy crystals, but to do it,
every miners need trainings and high educations to recognize
the icy crystals from million other crystals that also grow in the core.
Each icy crystals have different consistency for different kind of usage,
so those miners need to carefully to cultivate the crystals,
since once they were pulled from the ground, they have to be used in 36 hours,
or they would evaporated, those cannot be stored for very long time.

The retrieved icy crystals were brought to the researchers, the other main industries,
they develop all advanced technologies using the power of the icy crystals,
and learn about the usage of other crystals too,
which mostly used for daily activities, like light crystals, time crystals, heat crystals, etc.

Vova is a Miner, one of the experienced ones, that is shown by his necklace.
Each beads have meaning, the more beads someone has in his/her necklace,
the more experiences the miner has.

Regular Vurkie wears bodysuit with different colors (depends on their fields) everyday.
It was made from special fabric that adjustable to the temperature of surrounding.
It helps a lot since the they are living in icy hydrogen,
but gradually getting hotter near the core.
The miners wear white body suits and robes outside the bodysuit.
The robe is a symbolic of who is the ones with higher levels, but of course it has
other function such as protection for the miners.

Each miners have to learn how to defense themselves, since there's other creatures
living in the rocky core. Many Vurkies were killed by them.
Vurkie's main weapons are knives, spears or bow and arrows.
Vova is a knife-wielding miner.

Once upon a time in the indeterminate future, the PukiPukis, a tribe of tiny, peace loving people became overwhelmed by the aggression and unkindness of Earth's giant overlords. Eager to find a place of their own without the danger of being stepped on, the PukiPukis set forth in their space traveling pods to find a new planet where they could live the simple life they craved, undisturbed by the greed and constant squabbling of the oversized Earthlings.

Without a clear destination in mind, the PukiPukis felt a pull toward Venus, the planet of love. They guided their tiny crafts into a small opening space beneath what appeared to be a yellow sulfurous cloud hovering above the Venusian surface. Since PukiPukis long mastered the science of transmogrification (a process by which they can change the molecular structure of inanimate objects) they knew they could use the technology to modify their surroundings enough to make themselves comfortable in a new environment.

Much to the astonished delight of the PukiPukis, the environment below the cloud was a lovely, sylvan oasis with abundant plant life. There were huge trees, small trees and trees of wondrous colors with amazing flowers and gold edged leaves. Strewn about on the ground were gems and stones that surely looked like gold and silver.

Wearing his communicator helmet, Mookie was aware of a chorus of voices coming from appeared to be the trees. The tree-like creatures were actually sentient beings called the Givers. The Givers informed Mookie that his tribe arrived at the Venusian settlement of Plantasia and if they wished to remain in Plantasia, they must obey the natural order. The natural order is based on living in symbiotic harmony with all beings. No one creature is allowed to harm or kill any other.

The Givers explained that what seems from Earth to be an inhospitable environment on Venus, is actually a holographic projection that the Givers transmit to keep away any nosy space travelers. The Givers are aware that the gems and gold of their planet would lure greedy invaders who would destroy their peaceful existence. With no offensive devices, defensive weapons or armor, Plantasia and other Venusian settlement must rely on the camouflage.

Mookie is shown in the garb the PukiPukis have adopted for life on Venus. It represents the conditions of Venus because his tunic is made of leaves that fall from the Givers. His ceremonial cape is made from flower petals from the giant Givers. His communicator helment allows him to communicate with all the beings of Plantasia. There is no industry or farming. Food and materials are supplier by the Givers, who in turn are watered and tended to by the PukiPukis and other native creatures. The transmogrifiers have enable the PukiPukis to provide abundant resources to the Givers. If there is a need for something that cannot be found in Plantasia or created by the transmogrifiers, the PukiPukis will take a few gold stones or gems and use the space pods to travel to another planet for trading.

The PukiPukis live in small houses made from stones and mud with thatched roofs. It is a simple life for the PukiPukis and it is a happy life.

PS: SSSHHHH.... don't let anyone know there is gold in them thar Venusian hills.

WAAAA, I wish I could have been here in time to enter this challenge, it looks so fun! Good luck to the contestants! I look forward to seeing how this comes out.

 

I've got a lot of pieces mostly finished, but nothing actually complete. I looked at a calendar yesterday and was shocked to realize I've only got a week and a half left. Time to seriously get my butt in gear.

My shirt, pants, scarf, and gloves are all mostly done. Coat and boots haven't been started. I'm still hoping for enough time to also make accessories like a belt and mask, but those haven't even been designed yet.

I don't like to do progress shots because things can change so quickly and I like the dramatic reveal. I will post some fabric photos later, though. I love my fabrics and I'm concerned that I'm not doing them justice with my mediocre sewing skills.



Okay, I added a photo of my fabric. The shiny-ish striped fabric in the upper left is for the shirt. The sheer crinkly material not showing up very well in the center is for the coat (and the lining on the shirt), the decorative patterned fabric on the right is for the pants, the brown in the lower left is for the boots and gloves, and the blue is for the scarf.

I have three pages of notes on my planet that I still need to condense into a brief and logical summary including all the required elements and explaining my outfit.

My planet is Pluto, which would normally be expected to be a cold planet because it's so far from the sun. However, in order to overcome this problem, scientists created a nuclear reaction in its moon, Charon, to essentially create a second sun for Pluto. This experimental procedure resulted in an extremely hot planet due to Charon's relative size and closeness to Pluto (it also had the effect of one hemisphere always being day and one hemisphere always being night because of the way Pluto and Charon orbit each other). The nuclear and electromagnetic interference from Charon had an unintended side effect of frying all electrical components maintained on Pluto, which coupled with the minimal available planetary resources and the excess heat, has resulted in almost stone age level of technology. The presence of a rare and valuable element means that despite the current challenges with the sustainability of life on Pluto, a colony has been established to provide the manual labor that is the only available option for mining this lucrative element. Scientists and officials on Pluto and on Earth are exploring ways to generate enough food and water for the colony to be self-sustainable, to overcome the technological difficulties or develop more efficient mining capabilities with the available resources, and, most importantly, ways to make money off the colony.

On another note, yet the same, I am battleing my muses - I have a concept, but not quite happy with it - it is too boring!! LOL I am forseeing my weekend being occupied with sewing and writing

 

Welp, I finished the whole outfit last night. >w>; I think I might make a sketch of the 'world' it's supposed to be in, just for funzies.

Sigh, I'm going to have to bow out of the competition. I've got my design all worked out but my work schedule exploded and there is no way I'll be able to finish it in time. I can't wait to see everyone else's though!

 

I don't think so - I've got to work overtime most days for the next week so I'm pretty sure I won't have time to do a good job. Though, I got a lot out of this challenge so far - I've needed to really think through my girl's backstory and the designing process for this got me to do that! I'm going to be stalking this thread to see everyone's entries!

Fabulous I love it! Wow I better step up my game..lol..great drawing of the terrain and planet beasts. (ie start on my costume...finally narrowed it down now trying to dig through my fabrics to find something appropriate)
