    5. blue oracle ~ If the comic book character is a super hero, then no, but with a exception. Super hero costumes are another category and do not qualify for this challenge. However if you want to use a comic book character you can portray them in street or regular clothing.

frenchaddit ~ yes! That would meet the challenge.

Me: One of my favorite characters is Mickey Mouse. I was thinking we could channel him for the contest. You would make an adorable Mickey.
      Mookie: No way!
Me: What do you mean? You always go along with my ideas. You would look so cute.
Mookie: I don't want to be some wimpy cartoon mouse. I want to flex my acting muscles, broaden my range. Who wants to get typecast as cute?
Me: OK, what did you have in mind?
Mookie: Someone tough. Someone the opposite of cute. Someone mighty and powerful.
Me: Sounds like you already know who you want to channel.
Mookie: Sure do. Ghengis Khan. I bet no one ever called him cute.
Me: You are probably right about that. It is going to be hard seeing you as evil though.
Mookie: That's why they call it acting. I am not going to be evil, just pretend to be evil. Besides, old Ghengis did some good things too.
      Me: Such as?
Mookie: He did not tax the poor. He encouraged education. He allowed religious freedom. And he was instrumental in opening contact between the East and the West. Granted, he did have millions of people murdered, but this is just an acting gig, not a change of lifestyle.
Me: OK, Ghengis Khan it is.

Mookie is wearing lamellar armor that is typical of the type worn by Mongolian warriors. It was made of hardened leather squares with a fabric backing. The leather armor was relatively light in weight and allowed ease of movement. I used a little artistic license with the helmet because there were many different types shown.
(Don't tell Mookie I said so, but he still looks cute, even as Ghengis Khan)

    9. Choice made: The Count of Monte Cristo. Synopsis: A young man, Edmund Dantes, who was falsely imprisoned finds a way to escape and plots to gain revenge on those who wronged him. And does so very nicely. The plot is too detailed to go much further than that.

      The Count of Monte Cristo
      [IMG]

When I chose to use my Souldoll Lemkin I decided that I wanted to do both Edmund and the Count since the mask allowed me to depict both characters easily. After spending over an hour in the attic going through my fabrics I finally had carefully chosen enough materials to make both outfits. I will admit to some being a second or third choice when I considered the price but they would suffice.
But the more I looked at what I had chosen and compared it with what I wanted to do I realized that I could only do one outfit โ€“ the Count himself. I didn't want to eliminate all the fancy things I felt were necessary to depict such a wealthy character. Eliminating Edmund's outfit more than covered the cost of the additional trims that I added. I did cut out the Edmund Dantes outfit; it will be posted on the Project Runway chat thread later.

      Details on the outfit:
Trousers are drop front; fly front trousers didn't come into fashion until the 1850s. The fly front was a major turning point in mens' fashions - once the dandyism style had faded โ€“ that started the Victorian era style.
Shirt collars were high, ending just below the ear, and often starched so stiffly that the wearer could not turn his head. French cuffs and cuffed trousers did not come into common use until the end of the century.
Capes were fashionable outerwear; overcoats were present but didn't become a fashion staple until the latter half of the century.
Depending on the way it was tied the cravat could be of various colors. While some styles were white only others were more personal choice. I used the 'Mail Coach Tie'. It is touted as being worn by 'ruffians'. With his seafaring and pirating background it seemed the perfect choice for him. This is one of the few styles that weren't starched as heavily as the collars, in fact it was the only one I saw that wasn't starched at all.

      Accessories:
The watch was assembled from a two gallon bag of jewelry parts that I purchased for a few dollars at an auction, the same with the parts for the cane and the tie tack. Triple coin knots were used to attach the ties to the cloak. Sew-on rhinestones were used for the shirt cuffs and the vest front. The hat was purchased; I added the trim to coordinate it with the outfit. The wig was previously made for the Mt. Olympus challenge. He is described as having coal black hair and a pale complexion.

I hope you like - I am very pleased with him.

      EDIT: MISSING PICTURE

I forgot to add the trousers to the composite pictures so I exchanged the cloak and tailcoat for the details on the trouser closing. Hope this was OK. I didn't want to go over the number of pictures allowed.

Character choice: The main character Ling from the two Swordsman movies (1990 and 1992, adapted from the "Laughing, Proud Wanderer" novel, written in 1967-1969.) The outfit for the character in both movies were almost exactly the same. I'm going to try to make the one from the second move (the character was played by Jet Li.)

The character was a skilled swordsman who was involved in the power struggles of his own School of martial arts as well as the power struggles of the Sun Moon Sect. An ancient scroll that contained a fabled technique had become the centre of attention and bloody race had been launched for its possession. Ling himself was carefree and easy-going, but due to his skills he was embroiled in these conflicts regardless. Throughout his travels, he had encountered a number of colourful characters who became his good friends. He had also come to realise that those he had once thought to be "the good guys" were, ultimately, more corrupt and dirty than the so-called "bad guys" that he had made friends with. At the end of the second movie, he was instrumental in destroying the scroll and left the conflicts behind him to live a secluded life.

Isabella adores Tia Dalma from Pirates of the Caribbean

[IMG]fl Isabella by PRGerry *Slowly coming back to life*, on Flickr

Calypso was a sea goddess and daughter of Atlas. In the days of myth and legend, the beautiful Calypso ruled the seas, and all sailors both loved and feared her, even though she too had mortal blood. As a heathen goddess, Calypso was able to take many forms, but since the crab was attributed as her symbol, she chose that form. She appeared to be an eccentric, but her skills in the realm of magic were exceptional. By the 1720s, Tia Dalma was already established on the Pantano River in Cuba, and was renowned to be a great voodoo mystic in the Caribbean.

This is my interpretation of Tia Dalma. Everything pictured I made, excluding the glass jars!

I have chosen to portray the Sixth Doctor Who. The Sixth Doctor was an unpredictable and somewhat petulant egoist, whose garish, multicoloured attire reflected his volatile personality. He was both portentous and eloquent, even for the Doctor - of whom he saw himself as the finest incarnation yet โ€“ and his unpredictability was made even wilder by his mood swings, manic behaviour, bombastic outbursts and glib, unflappable wit. His personality also displayed occasionally fatalistic overtones. The challenge was of course the frock coat with its multitude of colours and construction. The shirt also provided new skills such as plackets in the sleeves and the question marks are embroidered on the collar. For my accessory I made the green boots.

      My Character Info:
Sleeping Beauty is a 1959 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney based on Little Briar Rose by The Brothers Grimm and The Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault.

The character I wanted to create is Princess Aurora. Taking place in the 14th century I decided to take some inspiration from not only the animated disney version but also historical references on cote hardies from the 14th century. In particular I created the parti colored cote hardie that can be seen in many artwork from that time period. The reason I chose pink and blue is if your familar with the disney animated version the 2 fairy godmothers were fighting over what color Aurora's gown was to be blue or pink and in one scene it shows the gown half pink and half blue with some splatters. To make it a little more fancy for a Princess I took gold mettalic trim along the low neckline and created a wide golden belt. And a Princess wouldn't be complete without a golden crown and necklace.

Note: oh and don't mind the white bar that is showing in the back photo that is her doll stand and not part of the costume. There was no way with such a large doll that I could let her stand on her own so I had to snap the back of the gown shut over the stand

A collage of the character and inspirations just in case those aren't familar with 14th century gowns or the Sleeping Beauty movie. The top right hand corner photo is from a illustration from the 14th century showing the parti-colored gown (cote-hardie). Crown and necklace replicated from the top left photo and the splattered gown that the 2 fairy godmothers were fighting over what color it should be.

    42. I have chosen to portray the sixth Doctor Who so I apologize in advance for the loudness of his outfit. Here are some of the fabrics I will be using. There are quite a few pieces to be made so a lot of work to do.

    43. Hello, folks:

I am writing to let you know that something somewhat unexpected had come up. I don't think I'll have the time to finish this challenge. So, with your permission, I think I have to withdraw from it. I wish everyone else the best of luck!

    44. WOW...that's some outfit! Love how you were able to match the fabrics, did you start yet?

SPhosphate, so sorry you had to withdraw from the challenge, hope to see you in the next one ;)

I have gathered up most of my fabrics, almost done with the wig and drafting the pattern for outfit now. This is the most exciting challenge for me!

    45. I thought I just had a toothache, but the emergency doctor said I had a dental abscess. I'm now doped up, tired but can't sleep. And apparently it'll get worse before it gets better. This is probably going to make my life miserable for at least a whole week if not more. Arrrgh!

    46. so for this challenge we are just making an outfit that fits our character and is within the time period of our character, we aren't replicating the costume exactly of the character correct?

    47. Kitty Blue, that's about how I'm going about it. I have a fictional book character who has no defined costume and I have been researching clothing from the time period covered. It's the only thing I can do to make him as accurate as possible. I've wanted to do this character for some time and this challenge has finally given me the reason to stop procrastinating.
What character are you doing? I don't see it mentioned in any of your posts, but I could have missed it.

    48. I have a few ideas but won't be able to start working on anything concrete until after Dollism..just wanted to find out the specifics before I make a decision on the character.

    49. I am doing a gender-bend costume so it won't be an exact replica anyway lol. I have a pretty thorough idea of what I want to do now I just have to drag myself to the fabric store. Probably won't do that until Thursday when I have off though.

Cannot wait to see how you portray Six frenchaddict! Your fabric choices look awesome! :aheartbea

    50. The costume must fit your character and timeframe but doesn't have to be a replica. In fact a replica would not show originality.

    51. thanks for the clarification I figured that was the case, I'll have to research some on the time period of one of the character ideas...though what if its something more modern? I'm going back and forth between 2 characters right now. Hmm though I guess I could do something sci-fi/fantasy depending on who I end up choosing...this is going to be fun hope I don't spread myself too thin though I only have probably 1 good weekend to accomplish this. good luck to everyone.

    53. frenchaddict; it looks like we're both in the same boat. I was really looking forward to your creating the sixth doctor. Quite often replicas are more difficult to create than something freshly hatched from your imagination.
As for me it is impossible to create a costume without using actual references. If I get creative with the style of the clothes then I will no longer be representing that era. The only originality I have is in the choice of fabrics, especially with male clothing of that era having little variance. I will think about this and I may withdraw. But I still will create my Count; I've been inspired to do so. Half the patterns are drawn, his sapphire cane is made, and all the fabrics have been chosen.

    54. The costume can be a replica. I have changed my opinion of creativity. Ladyfeather is correct, it is sometimes harder to replicate an outfit than not. If a character is identifiable with a certain costume, then it okay to reproduce it. No less points for creativity.

    55. That is great news! Full steam ahead for I fear recreating the frock coat will take some considerable time and I have only made half a shirt so far!
LadyFeather I am so looking forward to seeing your Count!

    56. This news has put a smile back on my face, I had also been a bit confused! First thing that came to my mind was the great selection of fabrics frenchaddict found! Seems like everyone is having tons of fun with this challenge, can't wait to see all the finished projects ;) I'll post my fabrics tomorrow. So far I have half of her outfit finished, her wig (just have to trim it after her outfit is on her) and still don't know about anything else...lol

Sapphire cane, wow! Can't wait to see it LadyFeather ;)

    57. Thank you elfmoon. I could see no other way to do the outfit other than to replicate the clothes worn during that period. I'm fussing with the pants pattern right now. There were no zippers in that era (not until the 1930's for clothing) so it's figure out how to make the proper button-up design!

frenchaddict: I've wanted to do this for so long I'm just as impatient to see it finished! And your choices of materials are so striking close to the used materials; you had exceptional luck in finding them. Good luck with it.
PRGerry: Hey, when you're rich you have to flaunt it any way you can. And it does go with the thread of the book, although offhand I don't remember a description of a cane. I can't wait to see your rendition of that witchy woman.
