      PROJECT RUNWAY
      GAME 20
DIA DE MUERTOS/DAY OF THE DEAD

      CHALLENGE:

CHALL LIMA, Peru (AP) — With the magical sound of wooden flutes, the scent of incense, and the warm Andean sun making shadow patterns across the rolling hills, this event has all the hallmarks of a happy, festive occasion. Families spread out picnics; strolling musicians and vendors sell cotton candy, toys, flowers and food.

But this celebration is taking place in a cemetery, El Cemeterio de Nueva Esperanza, one of the largest cemeteries in the world. And the event is the Day of the Dead, celebrated throughout Latin America on Nov. 1, a day after American kids go trick-or-treating for Halloween.

It’s a day when families from across Peru congregate in the gigantic graveyard in Lima to connect with their ancestors, and many even spend the night here. While Day of the Dead is most famously observed in Mexico, it's also an important holiday in Peru and neighboring Bolivia, where traditions honoring the dead predate Catholicism. The Incas honored their ancestors by displaying their mummies in a prominent place and sharing a meal and liquor with them. A shaman would be called upon to communicate with them and bring blessings from the relatives back to the living. The observance at the cemetery includes a procession honoring Santa Muerte, a female folk saint, originating in Mexico, the saint of death. A grim reaper-like skeletal figure dressed in a long robe, she is associated with healing, protection and the afterlife, and represents the mummies once honored by native people.

Taking inspiration from the above description, create a costume that embodies the spirit of this celebration.

      RULES:
The spending limit for the game is $25.00. This includes fabric and all supplies, except thread. For countries other than the US, spend the equivalent currency.
The use of commercial patterns is prohibited. All costumes must be designed by you.
Shoes, socks, stockings and tights are not considered accessories and may be purchased.
You may purchase supplies and design your costume before the challenge begins, but you MAY NOT begin sewing until the game starts.
For this challenge you must make a mask from any material you choose: paper, cloth, papier-mรขchรฉ, etc. You will also make an additional accessory that compliments the theme.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge theme
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:
Entries can be posted anytime between now and Nov. 1[SUP]st[/SUP].
The deadline for posting entries is Nov. 1st at 11:59 PM, PST.
The game will begin on Nov.1st at 12:01 AM, PST.
The game will end on Nov.30th at 11:59 PM, PST.
Upon request, a 48-hour extension can be granted from Dec. 1st at 11:59 PM, PST through Dec. 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]at 11:59 PM, PST.
Winners will be posted on or about Dec. 14[SUP]th[/SUP].

      PHOTOS:
Your entry must contain 5 photos: full length photo of front, full length photo of back, 2 detail photos (may be collages) and glamour photo that may include props. We would prefer that the glamour photo show a full length view of your costume with your doll standing up. The photo should showcase your costume to its best advantage. These photos must be included in your entry. They must be 480 x 640.

My entry I am depicting a dead child, I have given her a steampunk inspired costume. Traditionally on the Day of the Dead if the visitors were seeing a child they would bring the childs favourite toy so I made my girl a doll. The mask is made from linen with hand embroidery, the umbrella covering I crocheted. I made everything for the costume including the wig.

    9. neo-ragdolls: Congratulations on your impending delivery. How exciting for you.

Mookie and I will take a shot at this one. I think I will have to make a concerted effort to be more organized though. Waiting for the last minute to get started is my usual modus operandi (hence the chronic pleas for extensions) but this contest will fall in one of the few busy times a year when I actually might have legitimate excuses for procrastinating.

Dia de Muertos is a big day in Mexico as well as Peru, so we are going with the Mexican vibe and Mookie is representing a mariachi spirit.

GLAMOUR SHOT - It is common to build altars to honor those who have passed. Typically, there are candles and flowers, along with food gifts for the departed. Mookie is honoring his dear abuela by singing a song and playing his guitar (along with his friend Mr. Bones). That is why he is not wearing the mask in the final picture. Plus he says the mask makes his head look big.

Peru: Dia de los Difuntos (Day of the Deceased) in Lima and Cuzco Information
While Day of the Dead is most famously observed in Mexico, it's also an important holiday in Peru and neighboring Bolivia, where traditions honoring the dead predate Catholicism. In Mexico the celebration is called Dia de los Muertos, meaning Day of the Dead. In Peru the term Dia de los Difuntos, meaning Day of the Deceased, is preferred, as it is seen to be more respectful. This celebration stems from the belief that the souls of dead relatives visit the earth on this day and families need to ensure that there is plenty of food available for these souls so that they can gain strength to continue on their journey in the afterlife.

My gentleman is a descendent of an offshoot Inca strain which holds stronger ties to the old ways. It may not be quite what you asked for but it is more the true Peruvian way to celebrate the Day. I touched on this with the mannequin who offers a place for the soul to rest while being respected by the relatives. She takes care of your request for a mask plus she becomes the accessory. I made all items worn by my gentleman (except his shoes) and the mannequin (except her straw hat). The glamour shot was to have been outside, but it was dark by the time I finished. I've gotta stop doing favors for other people....

My interpretation of the Day of the Dead...I went more for a kinda mourning look. Outfit consists of red floral off shoulder bodice and matching overskirt with black lace, red ribbon detail and a black sash belt with a red flower. Red front ruffled underskirt, black lace gloves, matching lace umbrella and of course skull mask with red and black flowers with red rhinestones.

My outfit was inspired by late Victorian/Edwardian fashion, and Gibson girls; hence the upswept hair and high collar. The gown has a printed cotton bodice, ribbon waistband, and pinstriped silk skirt. It laces up the back with metal eyelets. The whole thing is wrapped with a draped tulle overlay. The silk and tulle were custom overdyed orange. The tulle is gathered and stitched on with orange and smoky-gray glass beads. The collar (my official Accessory) is a completely separate piece from the gown--it's made of felt, appliqued with the "bones" and then hand-beaded. The mask is paperclay, painted with acrylics, and tied on with ribbons.

    20. We were asked why the challenge requires a mask. This is the answer:

"We asked for a mask because we didn't want to ask contestants to do a face up. We are looking for a costume that represents the 'spirit' of the Day of the Dead. This would not be the people attending the festival, but either the performs or the 'spirits' that are visiting from the other side of the veil.

A mask will allow designers to represent these spirits without altering their doll's face up."

If anyone has questions, please ask!

Finally got the materials together - had to go out and buy sculpy since I was out of white. Here's the pile - it's got leftovers from other projects:

    46. Fabulous! Wow. I didn't find anything like that. I have what I think would be a really cool idea...and don't think I'm going to have any time to do it. :( Had tooth abcess and esophagus-stuff, a wedding, and now TG...and my house is a wreck and the garden isn't completely winterized! WAH! I think Morgaine will forgive me (she thinks I'm nuts) but I really wanted to do this. Sniff...Not giving up yet, tho.

    47. Here are a couple of progress pics... a very rough early draft of the mask, and my model hanging out with the fabric I'll be using.

I'm using LaDoll paperclay for the mask. At first I was concerned it would be too thick, but it shrank so much when it dried, I have to reinforce spots. It's very, very light now that it's dry.

    48. nice start on the mask...I'm thinking I need to redo mine I used sculpey and it just picked up sooo much lint and dust and when I tried to paint it, it got all sticky. I like the wide eyeholes I didn't get that far on mine yet..but the mouth/nose part is very similar...hoping to have this weekend to get completed since I'll be too busy next week to work on anything.

    49. Thanks! I really love paperclay--I don't use Sculpey anymore, since a friend gave me a pound of LaDoll. I finished the mask, and am going to paint it today... I ended up going with a different color scheme with the fabrics--I was going to do a pink-and-white Marie Antoinette thing, but I totally changed my mind :)

    51. Aww, thanks! I wanted to do it (and I may someday), but those 18th-century dresses are just a ton of work, and I wanted to be sure I'd make the deadline. I ended up going in a really different direction, with richer colors, lots of red and orange.

I sculpted the wide eyeholes so her eyelashes wouldn't get squished :) Also, I needed to be able to see her eyes when I was sculpting to line everything up properly. It was much harder to make it symmetrical than I had thought it would be! After it dried I had to go back and build up a few spots. It's still not 100% perfect, but now it's "charmingly handmade" instead of just messy.

    52. I'm gonna have to see how the rest of this weekend goes, but I might have to withdraw. I really dislike when 'real life' gets in the way of my 'fun time.' :P The materials that I had got are just lying around, I haven't had the time to do anything. Maybe I will have time tomorrow, I hope so!!

    53. So already I'm asking for an extension. An emergency came up and stole two days from me. Drat! I do have his outfit figured out and partially made.

    54. Well I decided on fabric I already had at home its not going to be the best I've ever done and not as colorful as I would have liked but I don't have the time to go out running around hunting down fabric. I think I'll be mostly happy with the outcome, so far it looks ok and is working well, just nothing like my sketches and not what I wanted to do/not as festive as I would have liked. But I'll need to devote a night to remaking my mask so the outfit has to get done this weekend since like I said before next week is out of the question with thanksgiving and my BF and I's anniversary. Good luck everyone hopefully the next time I post will be my completed costume. :)

    55. My plan has gone totally off the rails from my original one too :sweat hehe gothic lolita santa muerte was not really my original intent... But I wanted to make something I could actually use for other outfits too instead of something that Miya will only ever wear once :sweat

But I'm still hoping that I will have it done in time, even if I'm still working on it right to the last minute next Saturday...

    56. I'm so looking forward to what everyone does. Not sure if I'm going to make it. I'll for certain need the extension. I had a very busy front end of the month and have come down with some serious crud. Might get enough of a brain to see my vision through and might not. Sigh...I've actually got kind of a cool notion, too.

I have to admit to a bit different direction...My inspiration:

Yeah...I know it's for a female, but Morgaine kicks serious behind. ;)

Oh...elfmoon...please add me to the extension list. I SO want to do this....
