Modification Project Ocean Man - Impldoll Triton Restoration (Updated 4/22/24)

Feb 9, 2024

    1. This guy is Triton, Son of the Sea (I'm calling him Ocean Man until I figure out a proper name for him) released by Impldoll in 2010. He was a limited release, with only 100 sold. The preorder had the option of a limited gray skintone, which I believe this guy happens to have. His faceup and blushing are not original, but he's wearing his fullset outfit which tells me he's legit. He has a lot of damage!

I found this poor guy on a damaged BJD sales group on Facebook. I'd never seen the sculpt before and was absolutely enchanted by his unique features, and I'd been looking for a more intense doll project to occupy my time. I reached out to the seller to ask more about him and she informed me that her husband (who works in construction) had found him like this in an abandoned house he was assigned to work on. After some discussion we came to an agreement and a week later he arrived at my door!

      (And bass-ackwards at that.)

There's a part of me that worries about the circumstances that might lead to someone having to abandon their doll like this, and I spent some time searching this forum and the rest of the internet to see if I could find who his previous owner was, but unfortunately nothing turned up. The woman who sold him to me didn't have any more information either. For now my plan is to do my best to fix him up and give him the TLC that he deserves, assuming he will stay in my collection--but if his former owner ever turns up wanting him back then the story might change.

So here's what we're working with: His blushing in paint are in very bad shape, his headcap is missing, and he has chipped ears and fingers. His stringing is the floppiest I've ever seen. He has a very faint cigarette odor (which I noticed after picking him up off my carpeted floor, LOL). Even in this state, though, I find him incredibly charming and unique!

Here's my current plan of action:
      • Disassemble and clean him thoroughly, remove all paint and blushing.
      • Repair his broken ears and hand. I plan to use epoxy putty and I'll try to make them look as close to the original as I can with my amateur sculpting skills.
      • Make or find a replacement headcap. Not sure how I'll do this, definitely open to ideas on this one. I recently saw a video from Lomi's playground about sculpting one digitally, but I've never done digital sculpting and I don't have access to a way to print it. So far I'm thinking about sculpting one manually but I'm not sure how this would go. I may go the coward's way and just attach half of a styrofoam ball to the back of his head so it has a dome shape and he can wear wigs again. We'll see.
      • Restring him with new elastic. (Also suede and/or wire him if needed)
      • Give him a new faceup and body blushing. Body blushing may come later as I think I might want to use an airbrush for that and I don't currently have one.
Stay tuned for updates as I fix this guy up! And if you have any suggestions for how I might go about replacing his headcap, please do feel free to share. :)

    2. I saw him in that same BJD group and was fascinated but not prepared for the work he clearly needed done. I'm glad he's landed with you and I'll be really interested to see how you fix him up and what he looks like when he's back to his former glory. I'd also be so interested to see if you can uncover any more of his backstory.

    3. If you'll be working with epoxy anyway, maybe get a Styrofoam ball that fits in his head (reshape as needed), cover that with cling wrap & then try building a head cap over that. With the cling wrap draped over the head you could even work over the top of the head to get a good thickness & shape. Hmm...I know it sounds wacky but after working with epoxy I have way more faith in the possibilities & I had no experience with the medium or sculpting when I dove in so I'm betting you'll do fine. 4. He's such a cool doll. I hope his previous owner is ok. As a person who lost their first doll in a messy move once my tender heart is glad this guy was retrieved from the house instead of trashed and gets to get fixed up now. Hope you will post a photo set in the gallery when he's ready too! :D

    5. Wow, what a fascinating fellow! I definitely want to see the work you do with him.

    6. What a great find! I wish you luck fixing him up! For the headcap, you can cover the head in cling film and use a clay of your choice to build it on top - it won't be under tension like the rest of resin parts so the strength of the material doesn't matter that much :)

    7. A doll rescue! He definitely is a very cool sculpt! Please post more pictures of him so we can see your progress with him. I once saw a doll I liked with a missing head cap, but I was too afraid I wouldn't be able to make a decent replacement. ( I was going to try using Sculpy.

    10. Oh man, I remember when that guy was released. He was really pushing boundaries for fantasy dolls back then!

My favorite fast headcap solution for bigger dolls is those plastic DIY Christmas ornaments—there’s a specific type that’s two half spheres you’re supposed to decorate and snap together. You can just hot glue magnets to the inside and bam, instant headcap.

I don’t know why, but seeing the broken fingers was the most heartbreaking for me! This poor fella. He’s been through a lot. Can’t wait to see him come back together!

    11. Thank you everyone for all of your warm responses to this project! You all have great ideas for headcap replacements, I'll definitely be taking your ideas into consideration as I continue to brainstorm. :) I wanted to post my first update because I finished the cleaning stage today! Process below.

Here he is all disassembled! Not much notable at this stage except how dirty he is and that I discovered some of the s-hooks for his hands and feet are a little rusty (not pictured). Makes me think he must have been exposed to moisture at some point maybe? I think it'll be cleanable but if not then I'll replace them.

I started off by cleaning the parts with 70% isopropyl alcohol, a toothbrush, and a magic eraser. This worked to get most of the paint off (I think it's actually all watercolor pencil) but it left behind some flaky sealant and color residue and was in general not quite strong enough.

After I cleaned all the parts this way I gave them a rinse and went back in with Windsor and Newton. This worked wonders! Afterwards I gave all of the parts a warm soapy bath and set them out to dry. Here's him after:

I love this gray resin color and I feel like it really shines now that the green has been removed. I'm still pondering what direction to go in with him aesthetically when I do paint him. For those who are curious, I dug up an archived link of his product page that still has his original stock images: (link) It's super cool to see what his company blushing and faceup looked like but I think I'll probably take his look in a different direction.

I know someone is going to want to see closeups of his blank head so here you go! :)

I'm still really only at the beginning of this project but I feel like he's already come such a long way. I actually got a little emotional removing his faceup because I started thinking about the time his previous owner must have put into customizing him way back when. I hope that I can breathe some life back into him in the coming weeks!

    12. It's hard to choose a color scheme for him I bet. You could do deep dark colors for a stormy sea, or more neon/florescent colors to be like a deep sea fish scheme, or maybe even golden colors like the sun reflecting off the water or something!

    14. Oh wow, his sculpt looks amazing blank. I love his nose, which is a potentially weird thing to say but I feel like you don't see a lot of noses like that on BJD's. It'll be really interesting to see what direction you take him in.

    15. Love restoration projects with older more nostalgic like dolls! You've done so well so far, excited to see where you go. I quite like the old owner's green colour with the grey resin better than the company face up grey. The grey is a bit too harsh of a contrast, but perhaps with some love and care it could work?

Always sad when dolls lose their head caps! As it's hidden by a wig most of the time, it's an easier one to get away with being a bit less than perfect and I've seen owners make a quick one out of whatever material they have to hand, like polymer clay. I've also seen people use polystyrene balls to insert into the head, and then the wig just kinda sits on top. It looks ok at some angles.

If you want something a bit more complete, I felt inspired to write up an adaptable 3D printable headcap in a free CAD programme called 'OpenSCAD'. Essentially, you define the shape in code, given below, and then can save as an stl and send to print. Using code means you can modify it a bit easily. Maybe it will work for you? In this first attempt I've neglected to put in the side 'teeth', but they could be easily added to the code if it's any use.

As heads are quite organic, it might not be perfect, but it might be useful if you never see it under a wig?

On the web archive Impldoll website, I couldn't find a wig circumference, so just guessed 8 inches (I had 22 originally, what was I thinking haha!?). Then converted to millimeter, divided by pi to get diameter, then by two to use radius.

At the minute the code is also just a sphere hollow cut in along the middle. I rotated the cut a little bit, to be more like a BJD head but it's likely this is quite off.

As it's quite general, I decided to put it on thingiverse for easy access.

You can find the files I made here: Customizable (Parametric) Ball Jointed Doll Head cap by kerriharrington

      Printables

The OpenSCAD code is also below, should the links stop working one day:
If it's confusing, if you let me know the actual sizes you want I can modify my code to make the right stl file for you. You would then need to send that off for printing locally.

    16. Such a big project you've undertaken but it looks like he's already in great hands! :3nodding: He looks so much better all cleaned up and I'd have to agree, the gray is a really interesting resin color. If I had to give an opinion on a color scheme that isn't what he had in the Impldoll company photos, I'd have to go with some type of blue theme. I think it would compliment the gray fairly well. Or, maybe, if you want to go in a more dark direction, maybe some reds like a lava theme or something similar could work with the gray just as well. Whatever you end up choosing though, whether it's colors, mods, etc, I'm super interested to watch the progress and eventual completion of your project! Wishing you the best and hope you can have a lot of fun in the process! :thumbup

    17. I saw him in that FB group, too, and was strongly talking myself out of contacting the seller. I have an Impl Miguel The Demon Hunter LE100 (in grey) that I purchased 2nd hand and they came out at about the same time. My guy's original owner had spray painted him black and I needed to remove all of that for my vision of him (it took me 24 hours of scrubbing to get him clean). I then metal leafed him (that took 36 hours) in gold, silver and copper.

Just cleaning him as you have has significantly improved him. Impl is a great company (I have several of their dolls) and for the head cap issue, I'd suggest contacting Impl to see if you could buy a replacement cap. Since you wouldn't see it under a wig, it doesn't matter about colour. They might also be able to sell you a replacement hand although the resin wouldn't match. It doesn't hurt to ask and the worst they'd say is that they can't replace the head cap.

    18. Oh wow, thank you so much for taking the time to create this! That is so kind of you and super helpful. I'm so excited to play around with this! <3

I agree with you that the green that the previous owner went with does have a bit more charm than the original company faceup and blushing. I think I'll definitely be going in the more colorful direction with him as inspired by the previous owner. :)

Thank you both for your thoughts on the color scheme! I loved hearing your ideas. I agree that something blue and ocean-y feeling is probably the direction I'll go in. I really like the idea of giving him colorful markings like various fish--I'm thinking maybe tropical ones since they tend to have a lot of interesting colors and patterns. I've been looking at a lot of references but haven't drawn up any ideas yet. I think it'll probably take me a while to nail down the theme as I want to be sure about it before I go in, but once I start drawing up concepts I'll definitely post them here. :) I will say that I really like the idea of using metallic pigments and going for something in kind of the blue/shimmery zone maybe with some kind of yellow or orange accents like a lot of the fish I've been looking at. I want to make sure whatever I choose goes well with the gray as I don't want to cover it up entirely. We'll see!

I saw the photos of your Miguel on the Facebook threads about this guy! I love the direction you decided to go with him--the metal leafing looks absolutely beautiful and definitely does his sculpt justice. I'm a lot newer to the BJD hobby (got my first doll in 2016) so it's really cool to see what fantasy sculpts companies were dreaming up when that was more of a new thing. My Triton was actually deemed off-topic on DoA when he came out in 2010 because his aesthetic was considered too fantasy-leaning! The rules have changed since then but I did end up reaching out to the mods before posting this guy to make sure. It's crazy how much the hobby has evolved since then--I wouldn't even consider him that fantastical these days compared to some of the sculpts other companies have put out, but from the threads I've read it seems like both Miguel and Triton were really pushing the boundaries of doll design back in the day.

I definitely thought about reaching out to Impl to see if they'd sell me a replacement headcap and hand, but the more I get into this project the more excited I feel to try doing those repairs myself. It's exciting to feel like I'm building some skills related to modding/repair and I feel like keeping his original hand in particular feels right as those breaks and repairs will be part of his story! :)

    19. @Saphira Yes, Miguel and Triton were really out there by the standards of the day. In his original sale, Triton came with human biceps so you could put him in regular clothes if you so choose. I spent 7 years hunting down my guy; him and the Unidoll Ark were my grails (I got the Ark a few months after I got the Miguel).

My collection (I'm at 81 full dolls currently) leans heavily into the weird/odd/unusual/little seen which is why I immediately needed to start talking myself out of the Triton, lol. I'm def curious to see what direction you go with his colouration. I agree that the Impl grey is very lovely and wouldn't want to cover/hide it.

I completely understand wanting to tackle the repairs yourself. I've found it very satisfying to make things for my guys and while the leafing was a long and intense process, I'm super pleased with how it turned out. When I was playing with the idea of buying Triton, I had thought to leave his fingerless hand more or less as is (smoothing/rounding the edges of the breaks) and making the amputation as part of his character. But I also lack the skills to re-make his fingers to my satisfaction so there is that, lol.

    20. I wanted to post a small update because his elastic came in and I finally got him in one piece! :) He still had some sealant and color residue in the crevices of his body details, so I ended up spending a few hours doing a second round of scrubbing with Windsor and Newton and then a final wipe down with alcohol and a soapy bath. That seemed to take care of it! I also cleaned his S-hooks with some WD-40 and although it didn't completely get the rust off of the worst one, they are in much better shape now. After that I restrung him and here he is!

He's actually really nice to handle now that he's strung with elastic that isn't 14 years old. His funky shoulder joints do limit his mobility a bit but besides that he poses pretty decently. It's so exciting to see him reassembled now that he's been cleaned and stripped of his old faceup and blushing. His sculpt is so lovely!! The gears in my brain are finally starting to turn regarding how I might eventually want to paint him.

I still have yet to start on his repairs, but I hope to get started on those over the weekend. Stay tuned!

    21. He looks great all put together. Glad to hear ideas for how to paint him are percolating through your head. You certainly don't have to but when you're done, you might want to send Impl a picture and a little background. They seem to like seeing what people do with their dolls and this boy certainly has one heck of a story (I sent them pics of my boy and they thought he was cool).

I had a hard time getting all the paint out of M'khai's nooks and crannies, too. I did the best I could even going as far as using a toothpick with some cotton ball fluff wrapped around the end and soaked in W&N. For my purposes it didn't matter too much that I get every speck of paint off as I knew I was going to metal leaf him and it wouldn't show. It still bugs me a tiny bit that I wasn't able to get him 100% cleaned of the paint but I'm a perfectionist and that's a me problem, lol.

    23. Hello, I know I'm a bit late to the party but he is looking SO good so far! :D

I do hope you continue to update this thread and haven't given up on him. He is so unique and I would positively love to see where you go with him from here.

    24. Thank you all again for following along! I've taken a bit of a break on working on this guy since I've had a lot of new doll arrivals lately and have gotten a bit overwhelmed. I have made a bit of progress on his headcap though and I thought I would share what I've done so far! :)

I thought that since I was planning to use Milliput for his other repairs, it made the most sense to also try and make him a headcap out of it. I first covered the head in saran wrap, then shoved a ball of paperclay into the head cavity and sculpted a sort of "negative" for the inside of the headcap:

I let that harden for a few days and then covered it in more saran wrap and popped a magnet onto his existing magnet. Then I sculpted a new headcap on top using Milliput.

It turned out fairly messy (this was my first time using Milliput and it was hard to sculpt on top of the saran wrap!) but my idea for the magnet and the paperclay negative worked, and once it had cured this is what I ended up with:

As you can see, it ended up with a lot of indentations from the saran wrap, and the shape isn't super uniform. But it's an okay start!

I ended up taking it outside and sanding it down a bunch with 120 grit to try and smooth out the shape and make it fit a little better. It's still pretty messy looking but it's definitely better than before:

My plan from here is to go back in with the Milliput and try to build up a more uniform shape. I also want to try sculpting in the tabs he has inside his head so that the headcap doesn't slide around as much. My guess is that it will probably take a few more passes of Milliput and sanding for me to be satisfied with the result. It may never be quite perfect, but at least he'll be able to wear wigs eventually!

Once I get all of that figured out then it's on to his fingers and ears. :)

    25. The headcap looks fantastic, especially considering this is your first time sculpting a headcap. I’m sure the tabs will help to stabilize it, and they shouldn’t be too hard to add on on your next pass!

    26. Looks like a great start on that head cap!
Milliput will bond to itself so there is no problem using it to fill in the few divots that are left on the outside or to fill in the cling wrap texture on the edges. Tabs also sound like a good idea.
Thank you for sharing this project. It's always great to see a doll get a new life and especcially so with an old nostalgic sculpt like this one!

    27. Wow, the idea to make a negative for his headcap was a great idea! I'm not sure I would have thought of that, ahaha! Seriously though, it looks great. IF you have to do a few passes of sculpting and sanding that's fine, and you will get better at sculpting if you ever need to do it in the future! :D
