hello i'm planning to make an SD head and i want it to be as good as possible but i'm still a newbie in sculpting. i special very bad in symmetry. if you could give me advice and tip about the head cap, how to add the magnet or if i can use other way to close the head. here are are my roughs. note this is my first SD head but my four bjd, the first two were not good, Lui my 3rd was ok and i want icare to be better. suggestions and tips are welcome View attachment 160
You can add a magnet by making the wall of the head & headback wider at that point. Depending on what kind of clay you use, you can probably just press the magnet into the clay to make an indentation for it. Your sketch looks good, I'd start sculpting.
Good start~ I am a bit concerned about the nose-mouth ratio, though. It seems his mouth is a bit high...or his nose is a bit long, in proportion.
thanks about the magnet now i'll have to search a place that sells small magnets cause sculpting/hobby materials are rare in my country. Even the art shop are very few and don't have a lot of things. About the nose T_T i'll correct the sketches. Thanks you very much your comments really helps. I'll start sculpting when i've got every thing plan. unlike my previous BJD i did a little planning and had a lot of trouble while making the doll, like joints i didn't plan, parts that doesn't fit. This time i'll work it first on paper and then start with the clay updates sketch
Urgh, I know what you mean about the art shops not carrying nearly as many things as I'd like... Magnets: you can find rare earth magnets online easily. I made some smudge adjustments to your new sketch. I kept the dimensions so you should be able to overlay the images to compare? Mostly I think the nose is still too low, the eye too high. In the 3/4 view, the cheeks usually don't disappear as fast as you had it, so I added some cheek. I wasn't sure how you want the profile to look, so I only made up-down adjustments to match the other views. What do you think? View attachment 274
woah thank swyverngem and penguu. i've found a place where i can get small magnets, it's a beads and jewellery shop i'll go this saturday. Ok since i was so earger to start i jump right into it today. here's the head View attachment 175 View attachment 176 head is a little different from the actual idea, i've change the nose yes i was too long and made it round i don't really like the eyes i don't know what i'll do about it yet mouth is a little open hope to get suggestions and tips from you. thanks
I think the problem with the eyes might be that the eyey lids are too thick. They don't come out so much from the brow bone (side view). Also, you might want to move the chin foreward a bit, or move the nose a bit further into the face. Play around with photos of your sculpt in photoshop? I notice that you're not really paying attention to the bone structure at the corner of the eye. I know a lot of BJD heads don't try for realism at that spot, but I think since you're doing a pretty realistic head, you might want to reconsider...?
Icare has been sleeping in a box for a while..unfinished so when i got my new doll i test the head on the body. Enjoy I'll finish the head when i have some time but i'll get rid of a lot of things i don't like with this head...heavy surgery coming soon
the head-body proportion is nice. Cheekbone is a bit strange, though~ Not sure if it was on purpose but his lips look a bit pursed at the corners...like when you make duck lip expression when taking a photo?
Thanks for the comment I'll work on those soon i really like this head as it's my first SD head but he just sit around and i fear that I'll make it worst if I try to fix him.
Hmmm... I get this feeling often. But sometimes you have to destroy what's good, so that something better could emerge. It's a learning process, and it takes practice not to get too attached to your work. I actually like the lips, they give him an animated expression.
