I've been wanting for ages to make a custom doll version of John Cameron Mitchell's character, Hedwig Robinson from stage and screen's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." I thought I'd share my progress thus far... I picked a Unidoll Jace head because of the prominent nose and angular features that look very similar to Hedwig. I got my Jace head home and lo and behold, a thin spot in the resin inside one of the eyewells...while cleaning it before attempting my second or third try at a faceup, even though gently going over it, the thin spot gives and I end up with THIS: (the damage was actually far worse, but I didn't think to take a picture of it right away... part of my solution to repair it was to open the eyes a bit more--as shown here--which looks more hedwig-esque anyway. I repaired the remaining part of the break with aves apoxie sculpt. Then on to copying Hedwig's signature makeup style on my Jace head: (plus a pair of AOD hands freshly blushed and manicured for good measure) She doesn't have a body yet (she will as soon as I get enough money...) but for the moment I've been working on clothes for her with a different SD boy as my dress dummy, and tweaking her head to look even more like my vision. Here is Hedwig in her current state: Added about 3 times as much glitter, cleaned up a couple rough spots, and gave her some spiffy hot pink lightening earrings! Once I get her body, I will do the necessary customizations, blushing, and tattoo. I'll post updates then. Any comments, critique, or suggestions would be more than welcome! This is something I've been wanting to do for ages, and I want to make her the best that I possibly can!
OMG sjhf;osdhgtsihdoif *spazz* Listen, I love you. No really, I do. You are my numero uno hero now XD The resemblance is amazing! You really chose the right mold! I think the chipped eyelid was a blessing in disguise; her small eyes would have been overpowered by all that glittery goodness. I have so many things to say, Gah! But I can't even articulate real statements; I am so effin' excited! I cannot wait to see her complete! with wig and body! *subscribe*
Awesome! Hedwig is amazing, and your work on the head looks dead on, I can't wait to see more! I'll have to show this to my friend who introduced me to Hedwig and took me to see the show live
Ragdoll: THANK YOU!!!! Glad to know everybody doesn't think I'm nuts for wanting to do Jace as a tranny! lol. I'm really excited to do her wig... I figured out how to make and style it myself (if I ever get money) out of two leekeworld wigs (which would also guarantee me a color match), but I also figured out that would cost about 90 bucks! *dies* fragilelildoll: Thanks for your encouragement! Glad you like!
Yikes XD Yes, that would be one expensive wig. Were you able to find one suitable for her farrah fawcett wings? If so (and the wig lacks the long curls), have you considered getting human sized wefts and sewing them on? Hmm, just a thought XD if you don't mind, I am going to continue to stalk this thread XD
Stalk-away! Hedwig loves the attention. XD As for making her not-bald... I was thinking of human wefts at first...I've made people-wigs before with quite a bit of success, even on weird styles... I'm just not so good at making dollie wigs from the ground up. T-T There WILL be farrah wings, though! If I did the combining two leekeworld ones method, I think I know how to rig up the "wings" style. Not sure. Lots to think about (and some time to work with before I'll have enough money either way)... *sings* "suddenly I'm...Miss Farrah Fawcett...from TV..."
LOL. I don't think I'll be making a Luther for her to play with... no... (maybe a Tommy Gnosis...if I can get the doll I want for him before they quit making it...mmmmm...) Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!
I love the lipstick, that's like my favorite part! I'm a newb so i think she'll look awesome no matter what. >3
Definitely the perfect headmold for this! I can't wait to see how you manage with the wig. And which costume(s) did you pick to do? Face looks dead-on for her performance-style!
Thank you very much!!! As for costumes...well...I want to make them ALL!!!! *foams at mouth* I'm rabid for glam! Plus I'll make a bunch of other ones that aren't in the movie.... I envision her as someday having a full glam wardrobe. But I'm starting out with three outfits...the denim one with the berlin wall cape from the opening number (almost done), the black sequined question mark dress from one of the flashbacks where she's singing with Tommy (made the dress, have about 100 years of sewing beads/sequins ahead of me), and the punk rock halter with zebra striped pants from the "angry inch" number (have patterns ready and got the fabric, but haven't started sewing). Next month I'm going to get her some red converse sneakers and glitterize them, and maybe some DollMore Dia Boots. (not that it'll do her much good until she has a body...) It'd be nice to have her clothes, shoes, and wig and just be able to put her completely together the day her body arrives...(I'll hopefully be able to afford it and finish her no later than October)
WOW. From one Hedwig fan to another, she is fabulous! Beautiful choice of head molds, the glitter makeup and hot pink bolt earrings top it off beautifully. Love her!
Holy hell, Hedwig and the Angry Inch! I hadn't thought about that movie in years, and seeing this doll reminds me how much I enjoyed it. Phenomenal mold choice--I'm really impressed. I hope you get to make her a Tommy Gnosis!
haha! Thanks so much! Hedwig's (obviously) one of my all-time favorite movies! I'm paying off another doll at the moment, but after that, I'll be saving for her body AND a Tommy... I am going more stylized on Tommy, though, because I can't find an existing doll that looks as close to him as the Jace mold looks to Hedwig... if/when I do a Tommy Gnosis, I'll probably be going more for capturing the overall attitude, whereas with her, I'm going for details, details, details!!
I'm definitely subscribing to this thread, I can't wait to see it all put together A Hedwig BJD... AWESOME!!!
wow, she looks exactly like hedwig! i love that you are making her a full wardrobe -- i love glam rock and i wish it was seen more often in doll-land
Aww, thanks! I, too, wish Dolly glam were easier to come by. *dreams of one day making a Sabik into Ziggy Stardust... mmmmmmm* Glam is REALLY my thing, so that is kinda why I'm so passionate about this particular project. If I were a VERY rich man, I'd love to do her entire band and all their instruments. lol.
Omg, AMAZING. Be sure to update the thread when you get further on with Hedwig! I'd love to see a Skszp doll. Hee. I love Stephen Trask.
Wildefae: omg. I totally love him too. Despite screaming "no-no's" from my wallet, I have been looking into dolls to be the other band members more and more. Some would have to be more stylized than others, but it would be soo cool. I just paid off my dream volks girl a few weeks ago (she arrived yesterday! *happy dance*) so I'm tapped out at the moment. Hedwig's body is my next purchase...and hopefully somehow getting her a wig. Then (unless I find something better) likely a LEDolls Adonis or a DIM Robel (either way modding is involved) for Tommy Gnosis. Beyond that I'm not sure... But if I ever do take a crack at the rest of the band, I'm starting with Miriam Shor and Stephen Trask. hahaha...me=superfan.
THAT IS HEDWIG!!!! EXCELLENT WORK!!!!!! Your doll is going to turn out so cool!!! Definatly make a hot Stephen Trask doll!! I would scream my head off if I saw one.
hehe...thanks so much!!! If I can find the right sculpt to be Skszp, and come up with the money, I shall! Suggestions welcome. ^^; I feel extremely guilty about not getting her a body yet. I think I may soon put up one of my MSD's for sale so I can get her a body instead...Poor Hedwig.
Have you considered Tibetan mohair? I have a very, VERY fluffy tinybear wig on one of my Bambicronies and if I were to pin it correctly, I could definitely approximate that crazy volume Hedwig has on the go. It is something to consider, most especially for that wig in the second reference picture. I can see one of our mohair wigmakers here on the board making you that style easy easy, since Tibetan mohair is pre-crimped on the sheep
hmm...to be honest a Tibetan mohair wig had never occurred to me... I have one for a tiny around here somewhere...I'll have to experiment with pinning... Thanks for the suggestion!!!
Mmm, the glam, it's... delicious *licks up glam* Gorgeous work, I'm loving it! =^__^= Anneko, glam freak
Hedwig! Awesome! She looks spot on, I can't wait to see her completely finished with body and clothes and hair and all
