[[Progress in sewing -NEW- Yarn wig on pg 5!]]

Jun 18, 2007

    1. 7/16/07New yarn wig on pg 5!!
      7/6/07 New hoodie on pg 4!!

      I'm sewing for my brand new girl, a KD Cherry. Everything I've sewn so far is all by hand, seeing as how I don't have room for my sewing machine. ^^;;; So, please, critiques are welcome and advice is REALLY appreciated. Thanks for looking!

      First piece: Long sleeved shirt.
      I sewed this before she was even ordered. ^^;; Some of the measurements are off, because I think Luts doesn't have -exactly- the right measurements on their page. But ah, well... My sewing is also very rusty (not that I have sewn very much in my life-- Never used my sewing machine, actually..)

      Please excuse the kitchen background. ^^;;

      [IMG]
      An attempt at a pear. ^_^;

      [IMG]
      Overall, I think this one is okay. Could definitely be better, but hey.. I didn't have the doll yet. ^_^;;;

      Second piece: Off-the-shoulder shirt
      Or.. an attempt at off-the-shoulder. I really wanted it to hang off her shoulder, so I tried to leave the left shoulder off, but... It ended up being the most difficult shirt to put on her. I have to actually disassemble her arms and shove the forearms into the ends of the sleeves and then restring them and attach the hands. ^_^;;;;;; VERY impractical and difficult. Definitely going to redo this one.

      ((P.S. I made the black stockings, too, from a pair of black tights. Just a little bonus.))

      [IMG]

      [IMG]
      Sorry for the washed-out face. Just trying to show the shirt... I made it from some kind of suede-ish material. Yeah, not very proud of that one. ^_^;;;

      Fourth piece: A T-shirt that became a dress
      Yeah.. Too long, but it works as a dress, I suppose. ^_^;

      [IMG]
      I made it out of an old shirt from a thrift store.

      [IMG]

      [IMG]
      Yeah, she's a big fan of ARY. Xp 100 points to whoever can guess who this shirt actually features.

      [IMG]
      The ribbing at the neck was removed fro the ribbing on the actual shirt neck and I sewed it on (by hand, obviously). But the stitching at the end of the sleeve there, was just cut off the original shirt sleeve, so I didn't sew that. It was done by the company. ^^; Just a cheat, so I wouldn't have to sew that area myself.

      [IMG]

      Con't in next post.

    2. Fifth Piece: A Bunny sock hat
      Made from a mate-less sock. :3 This is actually my favorite piece I've done, and the easiest!

      Thanks again for looking, and look for more updates later on! \=D/

    3. Wow, I can really see the improvements! The dress and the hat look great, especially if you're a beginner sewer.

    4. Nice work, especially since you say you're just starting out. ^-^

      Love the Einstein pin BTW. XD

    5. Citrus: Thanks alot! ^^ Yeah, just starting out. Can't wait to learn how to use the sewing machine I made my dad buy me, like, four years ago. Xp

      Diefbaby: Thank you!! ^_^ And I'm glad I managed to keep that pin on my purse for years. X3 It really suits Sparrow now.

    6. I love the dress! I might have to try that sometime! And her stalkings, I've gotta try making a pair of those! The hat is cute ^^ I think I'll try to do that sometime after I find which socks are mateless in the laundry XD or maybe I'll just kidnap a pair and make two matching hats :3

      So, did the shirt origionally feature Hillary Duff? That's the only name I can think of of famous people that has ARY in it XD; ((watch, I bet later I'll think of a bunch that have it or something))

    7. What type of sewing machine do you have? If it's anything similar to my Mom's ((the one I've been using)) I could possibly give you tips for sewing with it ^^ I think the biggest thing for learning to machine sew is practice and experimenting with stuff. My Mom actually gave me a piece of fabric and told me to knock myself out playing with all the different options on her machine to figure out how to use it. And then she told me pratical uses for various stitches ((from regular strait stitch to zigzag stitch))

    8. Ooh, yeah! The stockings were really easy! I just took one of the legs of a pair of tights and cut it right in half and to the length of her legs. (I did all this before she got here.) And then sew them right up, so you only have one seam on each leg, and the feet of her stockings were the actual foot of the original leg of the stocking. Really simple! And the hat was super easy, too. X3

      And DINGDINGDING!! Hilary Duff is right! XD I can't stand her, but I liked the design on the shirt. And I just say Sparrow is a big fan of ARY. X3 A Japanese pop star or something.

      Ooh, I'll get back to you on what kind of machine I have when I find it. XD I don't even know where it is at the moment. But I'd greatly appreciate any advice you'd have, if you could give it. ^_^ And I'm glad you like my stuff! They're all really easy to make. I bet I could find the "pattern" I made the dress from and digitize it, possibly, if I come across it anytime soon. I just completely ripped all the seams on the original shirt and then tried to draw the shapes I needed on a piece of paper, to match the pieces from the shirt. X3 Pretty ghetto, but oh well, it turned out relatively nicely.

    9. Ooh, I'll try that for the stalkings! :3 ((My doll I'm *hopefully* ordering tomorrow or the next day, whenever Junkyspot responds to my e-mail on how to moneyorder order XD I'm getting a DZ Shoyo who'll be named Shoko probably ^^ ))

      I'm not a big fan of Hillary Duff either. But that is a cool dress! I actually went looking around today to see if I could find anything to do something like that to. Next time I'm at the mall I'll have to see what I can find.

      Okies, for sewing with a machiene, first there should be lines on it near the needle, those are your seam and hem allowance lines.
      Hem= the material that was flipped over and sewn to creat a nice edge
      Seam= two pieces of material sewn together

      The regular stitch that looks like ----- is going to be your regular sewing stitch and the one you use the most often. The zigzag is going to be for sewing unhemmed seams together. You'll put down a regular ---- stitch first and then along the edges do the zigzag.

      Usually you use a 1/4 inch seam allowance, basically 1/4 inch of material added extra onto the pattern ((if you buy a pattern at the store they already allow for this)) for where you sew. I when I make my own patterns make them extra big so I can first hem all the material and then sew seams ((leaving 1/4 inch for hems on each side of the material and 1/4 extra for the seam. I'm not sure if store bought patterns do that or not. Usually when I use store bought ones I do the --- and zigzag or whatever my Mommy tells me to do XD; ))

      That'll be the most basic stitches that you'll use and probably the only ones you use. You can set how long your ----- are if you have the right machine, if not it doesn't make much of a difference how big they are so long as they're not huge.

      Hooked up to the machine you'll have a pedle (pedel? sp?) The harder you press it the faster the needle goes up and down and the faster the material moves through ((summed up: the fast you sew)). The lighter you push the slower you sew. On the right side of the machine there should be a wheel. Turn this towards yourself to sew normally. Turn it away from you to sew backwards. My sewing machine has a button for sewing in reverse on it. I'm fairly certain most do, but I'm not positive.

      When sewing near the end of what I'm sewing ((like the bottom of a skirt or something)) I usually sew it to the end, put it in reverse for a few stitches, and then cut the thread.

      As you're sewing you guide the material with your fingers. DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS UNDER THE NEEDLE!!!!!! I know that sounds stupid, but a friend of one of my friends did that. And then he ripped his finger out of the needle that he put through it. Ouch!

      Use your pointer and middle finger of your right hand to guide the material close to the needle. Use your left hand to guide the rest of the material. This only works when the extra material is hanging off to the left. When it's pushed to the right use your right fingers to guide and ignore doing stuff with your left hand. Unless you're left handed. Then my instructions get screwed over and you get to work out how you're most comfortable guiding the material.

      Around the needle there should be a metal piece that holds the fabric down. On the back of the machine there should be a lever to lift it ((so you can put the fabric down)) and then to move it back down. You can lift it by hand, but it's generally eaiser to use the lever ((my lever is broken currently so I have to lift it by hand. It's a real pain.))

      Remember to pin your fabric down before sewing. Pins help bunches! Like seriously. I tried sewing without pins before ((I lost the pin box ^^;)) It was hell. If they're sideways ((horizontal)) and have the head sticking out a bit ((so the metal piece around the needle doesn't get stuck on them)) then they'll go through fine. If they're up and down ((vertical)) they won't go through. You can sew right over the pins if they're horizontal though.

      I *sometimes* take my pins out as I'm sewing right before I sew over them, but you don't have to. I just have a bad habit of getting them caught in the machine by running the metal piece over the heads >.<

      The machine itself should come with instructions on how it makes a bobin and how exactly to thread the needle. If it doesn't take a picture of it and I should be able to figure it out from that for you ^.~

      Good luck when you start sewing with it! :3

    10. Ooh, instead of looking at the mall, you should try a thrift store first! They're a lot cheaper, and I feel less bad about making doll clothing out of an old, already well-used shirt, rather than a brand new one someone could use to clothe themselves with. ^^;; BUT, if you don't have any thrift stores near you, or they just don't have a good selection, then I wouldn't blame you for shopping around at the mall. ^_~ A thrift store is where I got that Hilary Duff shirt from. lol.. I also buy fabric from the scrap bins at Wal*Mart and Hobby Lobby. ^_^ They sometimes have a nice selection, and there's not enough there for someone else to use for human clothes, but there's plenty there for dolls. (Though, you probably already know everything I'm telling you.)

      :O Thanks for the info! ^^ So sweet of you to help me out like that! I sewed using a sewing machine when I was innnn.. 10th grade? In Home Ec, but I'm 21 (almost 22 now) and so it's been a while. lol ^^;;; *old* But anyway, I'm sure whenever I dig my machine out, I'll come right here to re-read your tutorial! =D

      And about your doll, I'mma go see what it looks like at JS, cuz I'm curious. :3 But good luck ordering it and receiving it soon! =D And make sure you post a sewing progression thread of your own! ^^ I wanna see!

    11. There's only 1 thrift-y store near me, about 20 minutes away, and it's not one my Mom will let me drive to yet ((I'm 17, just got my liscense)). However, next time I'm in the area I'll see what they have! :3 And I'd probably be more likely to find in there than at the mall too ^^

      Sweet! She's a cute doll. I'm not too fond of her face-up on the site and am gonna give her one myself. I'm getting her the pink wig and blue eyes that JS has. And then I'll give her pink lips and a pink blush.

      I've sewn a couple things for her already. And once I get her I'll post a progression thread of them and more stuff on her! :3

    12. I couldn't remember which doll you said, but when I was browsing around, I saw Shoyo and thought. "Woah... She's cute! :O" She was my favorite! X3 You're lucky you're getting her! I can't wait to see!

    13. You're doing great! I love the last two pieces... I may have to try and make my boys a hat like that, it's adorable! :aheartbea

    14. =D Thank you! And you definitely should. So easy. X3

    15. I can't wait to get her XD She's even prettier when given a good face-up :3 After her I'll probably save up for TinTan, Xi, or Meigi ^^ I'm not sure if I want my next doll to be a boy or a girl doll, though I suppose I should wait until I get my first one first ^^;

      When she comes I'll probably post pics of my clothes on both her and Aya ((DZ TinTan, she's the one my little sister is ordering)).

    16. I love that bunny hat and the dress/shirt. Nice idea with the "cheat" for the stiching on the arm.

    17. I made this hat out of the bottom of a leg of some capri tights, and I actually meant for it to be cat ears... but! It turned out looking like perky dog ears, and it reminds me of Anubis from the Egyptian Heiroglyphs. :3 *shrugs* Ah, well.. I like it regardless.

      The shirt is a foot tube I bought from wal*mart, as are a lot of her shirts, and the skirt is a Dollheart skirt I bought from Mekou, and the black socks are those same black stockings I made in the first post, just pulled down. :3 And woot! I finally got her pale blue eyes!! XD I love them!

      I made the arm warmers from a scarf I bought from walmart for $1.00. =3 I love it when winter stuff gets put on sale because it's summer.

    18. your very first one was a nice fit :)... id guess the 4th was based on the 2nd.. and i really like it.. :) it looks really cute :)

      im so envious of that bunny hat... i want to make one for my ittle dalring too to wear at bed time... arghhhhh but ica nt sewwww... coz of my wrist right now...

      nice arm warmers.. i.. it was really great that the stripe was at thre right place...

      maybe i should go to walmarttoo to look for such... i really have no idea in reality where t oget such types of fabric.......

      well.. they were really nice firstfruits :)

    19. Thanks! ^^ And you should definitely check out wal*mart. They have a ton of stuff in the unmentionables department (socks, scarves, and the like) for almost free. At least, at my wal*mart they do. :3 Glad you like the clothes! \o/

    20. you know what... there has to be a walmart here but... i cant seem to remember where... hmmmmmmm... uuhuhuhuhumphhh... guess ill try kmart for now... :).. ill ask around where it is later...

      good luck on your site as well...

    21. I love her new eyes! And I need ride to wal*mart. I must find on sale clothing!

      That in being said I shall move on to important things. Like those being some of the cutest armwarmers I've ever seen. The clip on her hat really adds to the effect of the whole outfit :3 As for the hat, even if it doesn't look cat, it's still really cute! ^^

    22. Thank you~! And good luck finding walmart! XD

    23. Thank you~! Glad ya like the clothes! XD I can't wait 'til your doll gets there so you can make her clothes. X3

    24. EEEEE! So long as I can cash my checks I'll be sending in the MO for her tomorrow! ^__________^ *dances and jumps around excitedly and energetically ((thanks to a bottle of mountain dew))*

    25. Such energy. ^^'
      Nana, you make me feel old, and I'm the same age as you. <3

    26. Update forthcoming...

    27. Does the shirt actually feature Hilary Duff?

      EDIT: ah curses, it's already been guess ;;

    28. XD Yes, it does, sadly. But it's okay, you get half points. :3

    29. Fur wig! zomg

      Welp, I tried my hand at making a fur wig from those free fur swatches I got from Distinctive Fabrics. X3 It had to be two-toned, because of how small the swatches are, but hey.. Maybe she's a Harvey Dent fan. ^^;;

      I took the pattern from here. (Which Starshipangels on LJ suggested to me. ^^) And figured out that it was for SD. :/ So, I shrunk it several times until I found one that fit. Then I tested it several times using regular fabric so not to waste fur. I edited the pattern along the way to fit a bit better. The outcome is very complicated, but the upside is, it fits well! ^_^ So.. without further ado...

      And one with the hat! (Sorry for the spamming, but I wanted to get all angles. ^^;;;..)
      [IMG]

      Thanks for looking! \o/

    30. lovin' it (: your stuff is so fashionable and cute and it makes me desire to have a girl doll all that more - or make similar things for my boy who is a cross dresser XD

    31. 10 characters.

    32. I love the two-tone wig - it's very distinctive.

    33. =D Thank you!

    34. OMJ. That wig is so ADORABLE. Especially with the hat, you did a great job : D

      I love the two toned colors, and you picked two that went very very together, it does look a tad bit loose in the shot you took facing upward, but with the hat on you aren't able to tell at all.

    35. Thanks! Glad ya like it. Actually, I can turn her upside down and the wig doesn't even fall off. ^^ So it's not that loose. But, I do need to get some velcro to keep it on straight, because even though it's not all that loose, it still slips. ^^;;

    36. I think all Mohair wigs do that to some extent, I know the one I borrowed for my doll would shift around something terrible on his head. It's still a STUNNING look for a first timer's wig. : D

      You did an excellent job, but how far did you have to scale down that pattern by?

    37. the new wig looks really nice :) i really like it :)

    38. Honestly? No clue. =| I'm not keeping it a secret or anything. I just shrunk it down bit by bit, printed them all out (they were about equally smaller each time) and then cut them all out and put them on her head as best I could, because they were made of paper. I'm pretty sure the line that reads 3.6 cm I shrunk down to around 2 cm, maybe? I think.. >.<;; Not sure. I just know I've got to keep the little pattern I made and not lose it, because if I do, I'll have to go through that sucky process all over again. ;_;

    39. ^^ Thank you~!

    40. XD I know how you feel, trial and error seems to be my main pattern creation process, and then I constantly end up loosing the final product patterns anyway.

      Again I congratulate you on a job well done, and wish you much luck in future sewing endevours. : D

    41. ^^ Thank you so much! Good luck to you, as well!

    42. ^^; Oops. I don't want to make anyone feel old XD *is afraid of getting old herself*

    43. That's so cute! ^^

      This place you got the fur swatches from, do they have an online site? Or do you know where I could find fur if I've never heard of that place before?

    44. =D Go here; http://denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144724 and read all about it! It took about 2+ weeks for the fur to get to me, but it was completely free, and definitely worth it.

    45. Oh sweet! I must go beg Mommy to let me! I love you! <3 That is so cool! Nya! I wanna make a fur wig and Mommy will like that 'cause it'll keep me busy and because it'll be cheap hair for my doll! *squee* Nya nya nyaaaaa!

    46. Nyaaaaaa! SHE SAID I COULD!!!! XD *is doing that now* And I'm going to make my older sister off in college do it too and make her then send me swatches. I'll bribe her! :3

    47. XD Great job! The swatches take a while, but like I said, totally worth it. And especially if you can get your sister to do it too. :O It'll be great. Get her to get the same colors you get, and you'll have two swatches of every color, and you can make solid color wigs! ^^;

    48. I really love your works! Her outfits are well done! I'm planning to make some outfits some my new doll. I'm just waiting for her... XD

    49. =D Thank you~! So glad ya like the clothes. I hope to improve greatly very soon. ^^;; My first pieces really sucked. =|;;; Yeah, it's a good idea to wait for your doll to arrive before you start sewing, although if you make some stockings/hats or something for her, it helps pass the time until she arrives. :3

    50. firstfruits, may I ask how you found the wig pattern on that site? I can't seem to get to the actual pattern. It doesn't really help that my monitor is showing everything in random characters...
      Thanks!

    51. XD! Well, I found it by randomly clicking all the linked characters. Here ya go: http://yuki9.parfait.ne.jp/dress/b-wig-katagami.jpg Thar it be. Have fun and good luck!!

    52. Your wig is VERY beautiful and I hope you take pride in all your work because is it all fabulous~ :D This is another thing I wanted to try when I get my doll. Question: If you ever make another wig can you show your step by step processes?

    53. Nehehehehe :3 At the moment I'm trying to find how to log out so I can do everything for my onee-chan. Then, the swatches will ship to her and she'll ship them to me. In return I'm sending her 2 boxes of fruit Gushers and some money and whatever other random box fillers I find as a bribe ^____^

    54. XD Great job!! \o/ I'm talking my boyfriend into ordering some free swatches. XDXD

    55. Oh that two toned fur wig is supergreat! It looks so cute and funny and cheerfull!

    56. Thanks~! I'm so glad you like my stuff! ^^ Actually, the website I linked up there for the pattern -does- show you a step-by-step process of how the wig is made. XD

    57. Hi, freshfruits,

      Good job on the sewing, shirts, hats, stockings, and a wig!

      I think you show from the very beginning a good design sense, and finish the edges well. I think you're figuring out patterning, making patterns, which can be a lot of fun. :)

      Using the existing hem in the baseball shirt sleeves is efficiency, not laziness! Depending on the shirt, you may get a couple of body pieces and the sleeves out of sleeves, or around the bottom of a t-shirt, with all the hem edges finished.

      I look forward to seeing your doll and her wardrobe in the future, too. :)

      Ann in CT

    58. Thanks so much~! ^^ I'm very happy to hear compliments regarding my sewing. I do hope to improve and to learn to use my sewing machine so it doesn't take as long to sew all this stuf. lol ^^ My mother tried to teach me the other day, but now when I use it, the string gets all tangle up on the fabric, for some reason. :/ Maybe I can talk her into showing me what's wrong with it today. Anyhow, I'm very glad you like my works! ^^ Thank you for the sweet comments~

    59. Thank you~!!! ^^ So glad you like it! And I'm also glad that's how you see it. "cute and funny and cheerful" because that's exactly how my little Sparrow is. :3 *pats her head*

    60. I like it in the 2 tone colors! It looks to fit really well too, and goes perfect with your girls outfit Bravo!
