I'm trying to make a dress very similar to this one from Volks: http://www.volks.co.jp/en/superdollfie/dress/images/050703.jpg And its all going nicely, I'm now up to the sleeves however and I'm just not sure how to go about giving them those flared cuffs, I believe they're called Princess Sleeves? Can anyone explain to me what sort of shape I shoul use to imitate this? Should I do the cuffs seperately? I'm a bit unsure. Many thanks Kitari (apologies to the mods, I thought I posted this on the sewing board. Oops ^^
Hiya Kit! To get that lovely flared effect, you will need to do the sleeves in 2 parts. The first part is the main sleeve and that's fairly simple. The second part is the flared section at the bottom. When you lay the fabric out flat, it's actually circular. Usually when I make sleeves like that I use a 3/4 to a full circle.
another way is to have an hourglass shape for them, if you don't want a seam around where the bell starts. i had a major problem with the same thing.
The picture looks like it's even easier than the circle shape -- just a longer strip of fabric that is gathered and attached to the top sleeve piece. I wish the picture was bigger -- it would be easier to tell what they actually did.... I wouldn't go more than 2 times the width of the top sleeve, 1 1/2 might be full enough. Be sure to sew it on while the sleeve is still flat!
I ended up using a 3 quarter circle and attaching it to the sleeve: Pictures of the finished dress here: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30981 Thanks for the help everyone!
