Hello, I'm going to make my first BJD with DAS white clay and cast it from resin. Some of my question is: 1. Is it okay to use Mr. Surfacer with DAS clay? 2. Around how much silicone (kg) used for one time molding SD sized doll? Please give an estimate if one doesn't make any mistake using extra silicone. 3. should we cast in resin min 3 times? Junk, and 2 final cast since the first final cast will get dust trapped from first time using mold? 4. Have anyone use Easycomposite Fast Cast resin? Here is the link of the company http://www.easycomposites.co.uk/products/casting-resin/fast-cast-polyurethane-casting-resin.aspx It's the only resin that imported to my country:pout I really don't know how much materials I have to buy, especially since I'm pretty sure will do a lot mistake lol Hope anyone can help me, even just answering one of my question. Thank you!
I see no reason what you couldnt use any primer you like on das clay, I usualy use car primer, paint if I know my surface has issues and I'll need to sand it again, and spray if the surface is smooth. as for the other questions I'm not sure, though not sure why you would need 2 final cast, the air bubbles are more likly tr be a problem than dust specs.
You won't need two final casts. Dust specs etc are easily dealt with by cleaning the mold before you do a cast (make sure the mold has thoroughly dried though, because water and resin aren't the best of friends). Your able to use Tamiya or Mr. Surfacer on Das clay, yes. I'm using the 500 bottles of paint when I'm dealing with bigger dents and cracks and finally spray several coats until I'm happy with the end result. As for how many kilo's of silicone, I'm not sure. It's been a while since I've casted a few dolls and even then it was pretty much trial and error. I know that I needed quite a few buckets of Mold Max though .
Thank you so much for the answer, really helped me a lot. But 500 spray can? So 2 can won't be enough for a SD doll? Wow, this project going to eat my money a lot :pout Probably will buy around 2-3 can and 3 kg of silicone, for junk cast if it's enough. Also, can anyone tell me the difference between 3 types of Ladoll clay? So many people recommend it and maybe I'm going to buy some if my DAS supply is gone. And pretty sure the grey color prime will be okay with it too. Edit: found answer for my own question lol. If anyone interested in La Doll, here is the website review http://newclaynews.blogspot.com/2012/06/meet-new-clay-ladoll.html?m=1 http://nikeartstudio.wordpress.com/2014/01/27/the-beautiful-world-of-hannie-sarris/
How much materials you will need depends a LOT on how you work and on your doll. If you are pretty much done smoothing parts when you get to priming you won't need nearly as much as you would if you have a rougher surface. If you have a very rough surface you might want to consider something else than a spray primer first. Same thing for silicone, it will depend a LOT on the size and proportions on your doll, how many parts you make it in, what type of moulds you make and so on.
I'm thinking to make an SD-sized girl, around 57-58cm, with proportion similar to girls in ABJD market. I'm hopping to get an estimate for everything, silicone and resin, since I would like buying everything in one go. This help me saving for shipping and waiting time. Probably will buy more than people estimate here, since I don't really have any experience and pretty sure will do lot of mistake. But with tight money, especially university supplies come first, I would like to buy not less but not too much. So a basic, rough estimate is really helpful in my case. Thank you
Reusing and Storing La Doll After spending break time using DAS for making BJD head, I'm find it a bit too hard so I'm going to use La Doll Premix. I just wondering since La Doll is quite expensive, can we reuse once it completely dried? For example, I make a body part that I feel so ugly beyond help but already dried, then I cut it into pieces and submerged into water until it can be used again? Is that possible? If I just want to use a tiny bit of clay but have to open a new pack, can I store the remaining inside an air-tight food container? Or it will still become dry and hard inside the container? And when the finished doll I make is weight like, for example, 1.5 kg. Will the final resin doll become more lighter or heavier than the clay prototype? Sorry for asking so much question...
If a piece is completely dried, it's not really reusable. You could maybe soak it and then use the resulting slurry as slip, to "glue" two pieces together, or apply it to the surface of a piece with a brush to help with smoothing, but I don't think you'll be able to get it back to a good consistency for sculpting with. To store it, wrap it in a damp (wet, then thoroughly wrung out) paper towel, then plastic wrap, and then in an airtight container. I'm pretty sure LaDoll, when dried, is lighter than resin.
Thanks for the answer, hystericalparoxysm. Glad at least it can still useable in some way, since I only just bought a total of 2 kg Ladoll Premix and know there still a lot of error and trial in my way later.
I do re-use LaDoll, even after it's completely dry. Granted it's not as good as when it is fresh, but I make whole parts with it successfully. It doesn't matter that it's not as smooth on larger parts like torso or thighs especially on an SD doll. I wouldn't use it for making something detailed like face or hands! I basically just toss any old chunk of dried clay into a tub with some water (so I'll always have some), wait for it to dry out a bit and voila. Messy, but not wasteful. If it gets too dry I use a spray bottle to keep the right level of moisture. A better method is to first grind the chunks in a coffee grinder, wet it and than place on a slab of plaster so that it would soak up the excess water. You'd probably get a much better consistency that way. But I never bothered, because I'm almost done with this doll and for my next project I'm switching to wax. I needed about 5 cans of 500, 1000 & 1200 combined, but it's probably because I kept on messing with "them parts". Once it's primed all kinds of asymmetries pop-up and I kept changing things here and there. Again... another reason why I'm switching to wax. I didn't like the whole priming process, too chemical :-) even with a proper respirator I ended up coughing. And it takes a lot longer than you initially anticipate + additional costs (Mr Surfacer isn't cheap). I recommend only Mr Surfacer, I tried other brands and they either take too long in between coats or some of them form leathery sort of layer that's really hard to sand. One actually went and bubbled for no apparent reason a week after priming (had to redo that part completely!). As for silicone. I'm still not sure how much one might need for an SD, I'll have a clearer picture by the end of the week as I'm starting to finally make molds next week. But also depends on how many parts that doll has and so on and so forth... But for junk casts, do use a mother mold method... No need to waste the good stuff.
P.S. LaDoll is definitely lighter than the resin I'm using. I measured an original part and its resin cast counterpart and one was 7g another 10g respectively. But I don't think weight is important, as it's volume you need to be concerned with.
Nia2010, thank you so much for the reply! I don't think I will use coffee grinder but probably chop it into little pieces, as small as possible. About Mr. Surfacer, what is the difference between 500, 1000, 1200? Probably it's about the consistency of the paint primer? Also, what is mother mold method? Reusing the old mold? If you're going to cast the parts, can you please post the photo in WIP thread? I'm also looking reference for casting my dolls and lot's of photo ill be very helpful, though the day I'm going to mold and cast is still long....
Hi twinage, 1. mothermold - just look it up on youtube, there's a ton of tutorials on this method. Youtube will explain it better than i ever could. You know what they say - "better to see it once than to hear 100 times". 2. Mr Surfacer - 500, 1000 & 1200 these are gradations. 500 is for bigger scratches and rougher surfaces, 1200 gives you a very fine, smooth finish. There's also liquid form which is used for hard to get into areas (i.e nostrils, ears, toes). The first few coats take up a lot of primer to seal off the clay, final layers you don't need as much primer. 3. photographing casting process - i'll try :-), i need to update my doll thread here anyway. I stopped posting about half-way through process, which is just very lazy of me :p. Best of luck with your doll.
Just learn about the mothermold, basically it is a second layer mold outside the silicone. So while the silicone still hold the detail, the amount of silicone used is less than full silicone mold. I think this is nice but I don't think I can execute this method properly when I still need to figure how to make ordinary mold. I think I'll buy 3 spray can and one liquid primer first. At least even if it's not enough, I know a dealer who is near me and I can go back and forth. Thank you for the advice and encouragement. I hope the same for you too
Different kind of sculpting tools I'm going for shopping some material and tools but quite confused with lot of tools out there  I already bought x-acto knife and something called spatula set , that really similar with dental tools. Now I kinda don't know what should I buy, chisel or wire ribbon loop tool or silicone tip brush? I have seen people with all these tools and people who only have some of it. I wonder which tool will be more useful for Premix clay? Any other advice and tool recommendation is welcomed!
