Hi, I need some advice with choosing the brand of primer for my polymer clay originals. Has anyone used either Tamiya Surface Primer or Vallejo Primer on polymer clay dolls? Tamiya is a bit more expensive, but they're both meant for model makers and I've heard good things about Vallejo as a brand.
Tamiya is a pretty reliable brand in my experience but i have only herd of the other one in passing, through i haven't used either u.u;;; it might be in your interest to get both and see which works better for you and your projects, polymer clay is very forgiving especially if you burn it a little...
Thank you I suppose I'll get a can of Vallejo and fall back to Tamiya if it doesn't work out so well. Lol, I am not burning my doll, not ever! xD I've actually never had a problem with overbaking, and I hear about people having that happen to them all the time O.o
happens to me all the time but that might be just the ovens you use as well.... over baking is better then under baking! if you under bake your doll it will be brittle and crumble and chip at the slightest suggestion of force...
I'm thinking it has to more about the clay? Because I've had mine in the oven for up to twice the recommended time at once no problem. BUT that's kinda offtopic and I don't wanna annoy anyone ^^;
it's material discussion lol i have burned super sculpy, sculpyIII and the mix of the 2, different colours burn less/more (old version of super sculpy burns a lot easier then the new version, i found that out when i baked them together to see how different the colours wore once baked) it also depend on how thick your clay is
Lol indeed it is xD I use Cernit Doll. In all possible thicknesses from almost nothing to super thick, combinations thereof, thick cured clay with a thin layer of fresh clay on top... everything. Not a single burn. Never.
must be a different quality then ! i have a bad habit of it's not baked until at least a part of it is burned.... it's more picky about how long you need to keep it in the oven depending on thickness but i have herd of people never burning sculpy as well so it might just be me u.u ;;;
For a primer, I have been using warhammer/citadel white primer spray. I'm afraid I can't compare it to anything else, but I have found that it is cheap and cheerful, has a nice opaque colour and does not chip easily For clay, I have been using sculpy firm, but I am thinking of changing brand. It is a lovely clay to work with - it's solid enough to hold detail, but can be conditioned soft enough for delicate changes. Unfortunately, the problem comes after baking. It is an extremely brittle clay. I don't know if I am doing something wrong, as I am baking per the instructions. Very little impact or force will cause something to break. One broke on me whilst sanding luckily it's usually patch able. It has never just crumbled.
