Hey everyone, I am super excited for Pride month. I tried to search to see if anyone had already made a post already, or if it was not ok for even the brigadoon. I just wanted to wish everyone a happy pride month! my city's celebration is next weekend, but I'm not sure if I am going. My anniversary is at the end of the month and I have to keep our funds tight for that celebration. Is anyone doing anything fun, including changing their dolls for pride month? I don't have any rainbow happy clothing for my dolls, so I may change my MH dolls to something more pride-y.
I don't have anything rainbow or pride related for my dolls (even though all four of my dolls are some shade of queer!). BUT I went to my first ever pride on Friday! It also happened to be my town's first pride! I went to all sorts of shops downtown I'd never been to before, so it was a day of firsts. :P I also got suckered in to volunteering at the booth for my college's LGBT Resource Center while I was there, but it was fine because the friend I was volunteering with brought his puppy (who napped on my lap for an hour, it was great).
Last year was my first pride event too! I went with friends and very safer that way. I recently moved because my husbands in the coast guard, so none of my friends can make it to /this/ pride haha. I thought about volunteering at one of the smaller events through the month. I think that's really awesome that your college has a whole resource center for LGBT. My uni was just implementing one when I had to stop going.
I'm immensely proud of my college, it was chosen #1 most lgbt friendly college in my state and is in the top 100 for the country. In addition to the RC there's a community floor called Spectrum, which provides a safe place for lgbt folks in the dorms (biggest draw is gender inclusive housing, so trans folks aren't forced to room with people of their birth gender), 3 different support groups, and several lgbt related student orgs. I didn't know any of this when I chose to go there, they just gave me a really good scholarship, but I'm glad I'm there now!
That's awesome! Transhousing is definitely a tricky thing to deal with until the actual policies are in place. That alone is AWESOME! What are you going to school for?
My major encompass everything about theater that's not acting. So things like writing, costume/makeup design, scenic design, prop design, lighting and sound. I'm focusing mostly on costume/makeup, lighting, and sound. Costuming is my ideal career path, but lighting/sound tech is much easier to get into, so it's a good backup plan.
i would love to go into costuming, but the uneasyness of it worries me. Makes sense that lighting/sound tech would be easier as that goes beyond just the theater community.
Happy Pride month to you, too! In my country the pride will be in July though. I'm gray-a but I think aces are part of LGBT community as well. I'd just bought my first T-shirt My own design
I really don't need to do much for Pride, it happens all around me. My workplace is in the heart of The Castro district and the store I'm a Buyer for is ground zero for all that stuff locals and tourists need to celebrate. Right now I am scrambling to make sure I am super stocked on all the things we need before the month is over. I put in my wig order, my theater makeup fill in, giant tiaras are on the way, as are all the pride themed pasties, extra unicorn horns, rainbow feather wings, rainbow stockings, tutus, sunglasses, ribbon, pins, just have to finish my extended size shoe (re: drag shoes) order and I am done~ then to fill in all the rainbow and pride theme gift items. @_@ It is a busy month for me.
I don't know if I'll actually do anything for pride month, but I'm glad it's here. My partner is basically on the other side of the country right now, so that kind of sucks, but I try not to be too bitter about things. It's nice to meet some other LGBT+ people in the doll community, especially considering some of the not-so-great experiences I had when I was younger. Happy pride!
@idrisfynn yah, Apparently pride celebration here is VERY big, I'm sure the local businesses are looking forward to the sales, but not the partying that comes with it. @vam31 As far as I am aware, Ace is definitely included. as are grey-a. Most people add the + to include all of the other identities. i found the BEST tee-shirt today, oh, didn't expect it to actually insert the image! It fits me well, and my humor! @KiyoshiSenshi My husband is away for trainning this month, which made it super sad for me. I wanted to go to the weekend celebration with him. I didn't have the greatest time as a kid either. Feel free to add me, I love getting new friends too, as I move around a lot due to the military
Yeah... Plus I'm out in the field for a month, so we only really get to talk in the evenings. But it's only temporary, so that's good. And man, the doll community used to be super weird for LGBT stuff. I don't like to go into much detail, but it was like...there were straight women with gay male characters who apprently disliked when actual LGBT males didn't fit their expectations of what a gay man should be like? It was really weird. But it seems a lot better these days, so that's good! (Just...FYI @ people in general, yaoi and a bunch of other dramatic media stuff is nothing like the lives of most gay men or any LGBT people. Don't let that stuff influence your idea of what actual LGBT people are like. We're just people, my dudes.) [/endrant] (Also, that shirt is hilarious. )
@KiyoshiSenshi yah, It definitely weirds me out how straight women love yaoi, which are really just popcorn novels!? I don't hate people who enjoy it, as long as they don't hate on actual gay men or think that's a standard. It would be like using lesbian porn (made for straight men) to reflect how real lebsian relationships are like. I think maybe in general, the society's acceptance (at least in western cultures that I know first hand knowledge of) of LGBT+ has helped shape the doll community in some small part. /endsideranttoo Thankfully my husband is only an hour ahead of me, so timing isn't so bad. When he was actively deployed though, it was much more tough. I'm so thankful for my daily chats with him right now. SIDESIDE note, I just noticed your icon, I LOVE your doll! I remember seeing in on the home page and checking it out. I love, love love! the color and the styling
@ultrapandachan this is a great tee-shirt! I like its humour I had to design my own bc you can't find any ace ones but with Rainbow flag here. Anyhow, I can't wait to wear it!
The shirt is very nice, can't wait for you get it! I may improvise and get some iron on vinyl and make one for me, but that shirt is just perfect. it's unfortunately too small for me, even in the largest size. looking at your shirt gives me a strong urge to go buy cupcakes though! OH NO! cupcaketime
@ultrapandachan The businesses in the neighborhood are very very used to the pride party. They include locals that started it. The neighborhood also used to be the site of a Halloween bash that attracted thousands of people. The tradition was started by the original owner of my workplace. Now that is a party that got out of hand! I hate to say it this way, but back when the neighborhood was mostly gay, Halloween was fun and full of costumes. It was a real treat for the eyes, people really put int he effort to look great! Once the preponderance of straight people started feeling okay with going to the gay Halloween street party, suddenly we had tons of kids showing up not in costume, looking to get drunk, smash up the area and get into fights with knives and guns. Now there is no Halloween event in the Castro. Sometimes, the loss of insularity means we can't have nice things. My GF and I work together and we just celebrated our 25th Anniversary this year. I think we will celebrate Pride by getting the hell out of The Castro, we are going to be so beat after helping so many other people prep for the festivities. Re: the Yaoi thing. My GF and I are fans of the genre. I do understand what you're saying about it. I know lots of Yfans that understand that gay men and their relationships are not the same as the characters and stories found within, but there are others that have a complete disconnect from that reality. But getting into that as a full discussion could go on and on.
Yeah, like everyone can totally like what they want as long as it doesn't influence how they view the real world too much. And most people in the doll community (especially on DoA) are super cool these days. I haven't had any kind of weird prejudice trouble in years and years. My partner is a couple hours behind me, but it's not so bad! We're both awake mostly at the same time, though I gave to wait a bit for them to wake up after I do. Also, thanks so much! Ilya is my baby~ (And LGBT+, coincidentally. All my characters are, 'cause I like making characters I can kind of relate to, and there are enough straight characters out there. Ilya is ace, Aelic and Toshi are gay, and I'm super tempted to make them some stuff for pride month. Maybe if I have time~)
I personally don't have an issue with Yaoi itself as a genre, it's mostly the "complete disconnect" that is the issue! haha. One of my best friends LOVES yaoi, and I am constantly seeing the newest stuff from her, but I feel she is one of the sane ones too, haha. That is sad though that halloween celebrations were eventually ruined. Halloween is probably one of my favorite holidays, followed very rapidly behind by christmas, so that does make me very sad . I hope you and GF have a great time! 25 years is a BIG anniversary, @idrisfynn. My 8 year anniversary is coming up at the end of June. @KiyoshiSenshi Please tag me in them if you make anything more! I'll have to peruse your dollys again. Most of my dolls are actually complete fantasy characters that I haven't even evolved more than just themselves. That actually makes me sad.. maybe that's what I should do for pride. Then I'd want to buy more dolls though to shell out the other characters in their stories. Oh, doll problems. EDT: about Fukuto SHUT THE FRONT DOOR, you also love Yul??! She was the first doll I actively hunted down. I nearly bought her again when Luts re-released her sculpt. I nearly... (and still can) bought her HDF version. on the note of tee's @vam31 I should totally do that! I also need to make the "turning my Puff into Tuff" pokemon work out tank.
@ultrapandachan Yeah, those cupcakes looks so yummy! The T-shirt will arrive at Wednesday. You can make own one, too. You just need a T-shirt and some textile paint.
The shelling woes are so real... Every time I make a new character (which is basically all the time), I have to find a doll for it. My wishlist is so huge... I've recently been having a lot of trouble finding a sculpt for Toshi's boyfriend though. I'm sure something will pop up eventually. And I love Yul! Mostly the romance version. The newest romance centaur was actually the sculpt that got me back into dolls after a several year hiatus, so I was super happy to find the Moonlit Song version on the MP. He's so perfect for Toshi, and Luts faceups are just fantastic.
Their event that is going on right now... I have had to pretty much block the website from my computer . I would be able to spend enough to get the My choice if I had unlimited money.
I have some mixed feelings about Pride this year-- I was excited because last year, I'd moved from a town with... like, NOTHING, to a real city, but towards the end of the summer where I'd already missed everything. But... it turns out my new home city holds its Pride event in August, on a weekend where I'll be out at a convention. So it seems like I can't win. I don't know if I'll be able to get a ride to go enjoy Pride at the next city over, but at least I can enjoy Pride month virtually, through everyone's online posts. My favorite shirts I've seen... There was a set of tank tops, one of them was 'Asexual Pirates Aren't Interested in Your Booty' and the other was 'Pansexual Pirates Want All The Booty', and then my other favorite was a star striped with the ace flag that said SPACE ACE.
hahaha, I love the pan one! I know parts of NC actually celebrate in august, a few of my friends are planning for that month. I may end up going to theirs instead as their town is smaller than mine, and I'd feel a little more comfortable either way because my friends would be there.
I like how South Park put basically that Yaoi is for girls by girls, my armchair studies in to gender for my real life work also say it's a phase many young women go through and get out of, like fan fiction. I'm rather dark grey heading for black. (face palm the chain is upside down) These are Chain Maile aluminum links from JoAnn and work for people and dolls.
that looks really nice! I know shortly after i started DOA, there was someone who did fish scale chain link for dolls. really nice!
Pride is in July here. I've been to Pride events in my old city several years running (even though I'm straight). Not sure if I'm going to take in any of the festivities here this year or not, but i will get to see stuff at least, as I work downtown.
I know when my mom worked downtown in Charleston, SC, she was always seeing the celebrations and events by default because she worked in the historic area. I bet you get to witness the fun, and experience the traffic!!! lol
No fun dolly stuff (yet), But I'm getting into the spirit with a few human bracelets IMG_20170607_170340 by Allouetta, on Flickr
I'm glad this is also in the offtopic section because I can link to my MH doll outfit. One of my favorite dolly-seamstress had a MH set that I thought was pride appropriate. Pan-Da! — Finally put clothes on her! Thanks to @nezumitoo...
The socks! Which reminds me I need to order some good Pride socks from Sock Dreams, even if I can't go to the local big event...
Jumping in with yet another of my stupid questions ... I really do live under a rock sometimes, what does the grey and black mean?
@Jany The purple-black-grey-white flag is for asexual pride. Asexuality - Wikipedia Personally I am not interested in physical relations with other people and that has grown stronger as I have gotten older.
Oooooh I see! Thank you for educating me (What does each colour stand for, if you don't mind me asking?)
i know the designer of the flag actually had each color representing different traits, not different sexualities. I don't actually remember which means which, but I /think/ purple is bi because I saw it in a lot of bi-pride posts this month.
@Jany From Wikipedia- The black stripe represents asexuality, the grey stripe representing the grey-area between sexual and asexual, the white stripe sexuality, and the purple stripe community. Purple is bisexuality in a different flag.
@dollkim I thought she was referring to the rainbow flag that has grey added, not your chain mail (and the flag it represents)! Soooo sorry. My brain forgot that. thanks for correcting me.
We had a massive Pride festival here just this past weekend; I need to learn to plan better so I can go to the actual festival next year. I'm part of an organization that walks in the parade, and because you're just so on the whole time you're in that parade, by the time I reach the end I'm exhausted, so my best laid plans of "go play in the park" always turn into "go get food and pass out" instead. From the walking side of the parade, though, I really love seeing how so many different people can come together and celebrate community and inclusiveness like they do, and it's fantastic seeing how many people of all walks of life are there to support everyone else. (We were entry #111 this year, and we weren't the last entry by a long shot.) The people on the sidelines may get to see the whole parade, but I get to see the whole crowd (and even hug a few people!), and it's a beautiful thing. As for the doll side, I do have a few gay, bi and ace dolls here. I'm straight, myself, but I do my best to be respectful with the characterizations of those dolls.
@DollyKim @Jany Ah, me too! Growing up without having a word for it or knowing that it was a thing, like... I always assumed that NOBODY was really all that interested in sex, at least not as much as they claimed, but that maybe after you got married you would suddenly like it, and that other people my age just... liked to say they were interested in it to sound grown up. I do remember asking as a child if I had to be Catholic to become a nun, because as far as I could tell, nuns were the one group of adult women who did not have to have babies. And really, learning how babies happen only strengthened that determination, though thankfully I was told I did not have to be a nun to avoid having sex/children. I wish I had been able to get Ace pride striped socks, especially since purple/black/silver-or-grey is one of my favorite color combinations anyway, but they were sold out, so I just have the Genderfluid-striped ones.
Purple and shades of black and grey striped sox seems like the sort of thing Hot Topic would carry. At least they're easy colors to come upon in stuff. I knew early I wasn't going to have human children, fur babies and dolls are enough. There have been many factors in my life to reach my 10% grey. There's still a chance I'll cross paths with ____ and something could happen but generally it's not gonna.
I'm a little late to this party but happy pride!! I brought my MH to the march in Toronto, and decked her out in pride gear. :3
Thank you! I repainted a pair of... uh, I think they were whoever the venus fly trap girl is, from her cheerleader uniform.
It is so well done, good job! I want a pair of human sized shoes like that *deep sigh* haha. I don't actually have any shoes on my MH dolls. I keep meaning to make some or buy some but they're all just shoe-less at this point. However, on the topic of being too late, i don't think July is too late. My sister's town doesn't celebrate until almost September! hahaha
Thank you! I got them from a mixed bag of toys at a thrift shop! If you have any second-hand stores near you, check them occasionally. You might find MH dolls still in their outfits and accessories that you can buy for cheap. September eh? It would be fun to tour all the different prides. And for us queer folks, pride month is every month, year round lmao
I am a military spouse, so I don't have a lot of community that I can really root into. Pride celebrations makes it very convenient for me to meet other queer people without too much work, hahaha.
