Preventing Staining from Clothes, Removing a Clothing Stain from Resin

Apr 2, 2005

    1. So just to make sure -

I understand that if I hand make clothes then I should wash/soak them first, but if I order dark doll clothes from a company such as Dream of Doll, should I wash/soak them? It seems like that might damage the clothes... *_*

Also I have been browsing through this thread and I'm a little confused. Just how should I wash/rinse the clothes? I've heard vinegar, soap, etc and I'm not sure what the consensus is.

    2. I was sewing my doll some cool jeans, and damn, I hate myself for not washing them multiple times before trying them on him... He's slightly blue on his legs now! I tried soap and water and it made it much better, it's really faint and I think that you would never notice unless I told you, but still... What can I do? Is there any method to remove the slight blue parts on him? Is the only method sanding? Any tutorials on sanding without respirator?

I'm planning on body-up him in some weeks, but can I spray a layer of MSC now already? Or should I definitely wait?

I'm getting so paranoid! Will it even help after having washed the fabric?
Are dolls that easy to discolor? Do they get dirty that easily? What are the best methods to remove stains and dirt? Will MSC help against stains and dust?

      I'm considering sanding his whole body before doing his body-up, just because. Do you think it's a good idea or bad? And, well, I can't get ahold of a breathing-respirator, so anything I can use instead? ^^;

Thank you so much for all tips.

    3. I heard you can use magic erasers on doll stains, and I don't think you really need a resperator for sanding as long as you work in a well ventilated area, wet the sandpaper and the doll constantly cleaning the resin off with water and a towel, and uses a hankercheif or medical mask when doing this. Hope everything works out ^^

    4. what kind of sandpaper should I buy? there are some that you can wet... sponge sandpaper maybe? Any idea where I can get one? ^^;

    5. magic erasers are also called 'melanine sponges' if i remember correctly.

    6. In the future you should consider lining all the pants you make your dolls in white or flesh colored thin fabric. I do this for my dolls and it prevents staining. I also don't let them sit around in very dark clothes for long period of times.

    7. I'm not sure if all sandpaper is wet-able xD
you can check out this thread on tips:http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237593

    8. thanks! they're cheap, so i'll ask what the shipping would be and will buy one.
but will it be too late if it arrives in like 2 weeks i wonder?

    9. thanks, good tip. I'll probably at least make some kind of underpants, so the damage will be minimal. but i will be lining these jeans... geez. :(
and definitely pre-wash ALL my fabrics, or always use second-hand clothes....

    10. Magic clean errasers are made of love! also if you want a multipurpose solution you can always use a pair of (i know its funny) Dolly tights. it does the job really well under blue jeans.

    11. the person charged me 4usd in shipping and sent the package today, just a day after, so I suspect it'll get here very soon. I don't think it'll take long, but if you feel restless, I suggest visiting a Wallmart or Target, maybe, and checking for magic erasers if you can and if it fails you'll have sandpaper on the way :3

    12. If the Magic Eraser doesn't work, you could try wiping him down with Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer. Sometimes that will remove marks more easily than Magic Eraser. It's resin-safe and non-toxic, and you can buy it at a local craft/hobby store like Hobby Lobby or Michael's. Good Luck!

Edit: Sorry, I didn't notice the location of the OP. Winsor & Newton might still be available online at art supply stores. It really does work like a charm, and I don't know what I'd do without it. :sweat

    13. I doubt you'l be able to get Winsor&Newton in Sweden, but, look in the MagicEraser thread.
There might be a shop in Sweden that sells them.
      ThinkPink sells them.

Also, get some 90% Isopropyl Alcohol (Or Rubbing Alchol) .

Try the rubbing alchol & magic eraser before sanding :)
      Good luck :clover

      Edit;
MagicEraser thread ; look in the 1st post :
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165482

      ThinkPink. One Euro.
      http://shop.fashiondoll.nl/product_info.php?cPath=143_199&products_id=893

You might find Rubbing Alcohol in a Chemist. Or look on eBay :)

    14. I found out that a normal rubber (eraser) that you can use for school or work, is really good at removing stains! I had trouble with blue jeans staining him, and soap and water couldn't get it all off, so I tried my rubber after cleaning it, and it worked perfectly! No stains at all anymore!

Anyone else noticed how well this works? Or am I being fooled?

    15. I want to buy some black clothes for my white skinned doll, but I'm afraid if the black cloth will stain the white resin. Will it? I fit does, any tips on how to avoid it? Among the things I want to buy for him are black skinnies, they're tight so, will they stain?

    16. Hmmm,idk if it'll stain..
But if it does try a magic eraser : )

    17. Wash the clothes before putting them on a doll. That's common practice for any resin doll, I think.

      Salt and water or vinegar and water. Clothes only stain if the extra dye was never rinsed out. But I believe this would be better suited in the workshop subforms ^^;

    18. Black fabric CAN stain resin, but there usually not that bad if you remove them right after discovering stained spots. Don't leave unwashed dark clothes on your doll for a longer period of time! Depending on how humid the air in your room is, these stains can be a real pain...
An I agree with animemadie: Magic eraser works wonders ^^

    19. I purchased a pair of black skinnies for my SOOM Namu and he has a cream white skin color...and yes, the black colored his skin (turned it a little brown). Then I purchased a pair of special made pants (black velvet) from Marsh Pants and those are absolutely wonderful - No staining! I suppose it's all up to what kind of material is used on the pants. If you want to you can protect his/her lower half by getting a pair of tights and cutting the feet off (or leaving them on) to protect the doll from any discoloration off the clothing...;)

    20. Black fabric esp. brand new will stain. Ashton Drake had to recall their newest BJD due to dressing her for shipping in black stockings caused dolls legs to be stained. Needless to say this is going to cost AD a lot to fix esp. if those who ordered ask for refunds.

    21. Black or any dark fabric can stain but it generally can be taken care of with a good going over with a magic eraser. That said though, I've had some dolls in black clothes for a long time with no staining.

As for the Ashton Drake doll, she's vinyl, not resin & vinyl is extremely prone to staining.

    22. I have a shirt that was washed by ther person who gave it to me and myself but it somehow rubbed against my doll and stained him. There was no way to know until it happened. The only other problem I ever had was checkerboard fabric that left checkerboard smudges on him.

When I'm not sure I try to put muslin liner clothes on under an outfit. If you're clever at sewing a body stocking may work too.

    23. I was told to soak dark clothes in a water and vinegar bath for like 30 min to an hour and then raise throughly. I've done that and so far no stains.

    24. The good ol' waterxvinegar treatment will be your savior.
Make friends with it XD It'll help :3

    25. black clothes that are going to stain, will stain a doll regardless if its WS or NS. washing them first will definitely help prevent any staining. if it makes you feel better i have a WS boy who only wears black and he has never been stained even a little by his clothes.

    26. I have a DZ Wing-2 .. Just got him on sunday.. and I've noticed this about him..

      HIS FULLSET STAINS EVERYHTING
      >.< Red on the joints, blakc on the elbows, black on the knees, his fingertips that dont have ANYTHING on them(wearing wise) have turned black.

I need a means of keeping this off.. as his fullset was the only thing i have for him as of right now..
Should I handwash the clothing? to get the dye out?
Should I spray the crap out of his body with a sealent?
Should I go crazy with worriedness cause he's a white skintoned doll, and stains are CLEARLY VISIBLE? (Wait.. did that allready.. dang)

      Halp ;^; :...(:...(:...(:...(

    27. most people just wash the clothes though that depends of what its made of
but you could hand wash it too its the same ^-^

oh and the clothing stains come off real easy just use magic eraser :3

    28. I've heard rinsing the clothes with vinegar pulls the excess dye out, but you'd have to look it up, or confirm it with someone else. I know my DZ Mo boy's black shirt leaves stains too. Good thing I never put him in it.

    29. WingII's outfit is made out of a few different fabrics, though, including one that looks like either pleather or possibly Ultrasuede. I'm curious about this too, because I'm planning on getting a DZ WingII, as well.

Are there any threads or ideas as to how to keep synthetic fabrics from running/bleeding/staining?

    30. Well, I've just washed his clothing in ice cold water *HANDWASHED**(Wouldnt believe how dark the water got) I used a very VERY small ammount of woolite zero because of the dark colors.. the pleather hasnt flaked or anything, it looks a bit more like snake skin now, scaley allmost. but thats because I squished it. my idiocity. But all looks good right now. I wanna hope for the best.

I'm also going to be putting clear nailpolish in the inside of his boots by the top where the belt is, Becasue I had a ring, completely around his leg from the boots.
      Lets hope this works.

    31. Ah...*nods* That sounds like a good method, especially with how much dye came out. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

As for the boots, I've heard that socks (or in his case, they'd kinda have to be stockings ^-^;; ) work wonders when it comes to preventing staining. And with the pants, you wouldn't even see them =)

    32. ALLMOST DRY And the scaleyness went away, it looks allmost worn now, which I like, makes him look a little more odler than he is.

But BUT, It works.. woolite zero, swishyswishy, blowdryerrrrrr for liek 5 mins after to get the little excesss water off, flat dried, then after the PANTS are dried, not the little tassles and whatnot, put them on and stand him up. the leather cloak-part likes to fold and curl at the end, stand him up on an edge. (Dollstand, hust put him on backwards.)

      Eet works ;D:lol:

    33. I get stains off my bobobie with a dry magic eraser- it usually comes right off- no scrubbing or soaking required- but I don't know about other resins...

    34. okay, so a vineger soak is a good way to get rid of excess dye, but what happens if said piece of clothing also has bits of white? Won't the dye coming out stain those? Or does the soak keep the white bits from being stained black as well?:?

    35. That depends on the white's quality. Is it cotton, then yes, it will most likely stain from the surrounding dyed-water, but if it's synthetic then no =)

    36. yeah, cause i'm getting a dress set from dollmore that's black, but has some white on the ends of the sleeves.

    37. *Believe this is in the right area*
so my boy has been wearing this long sleeved black form fitting shirt by Doll-zone which is apart of the MO fullset outfit. I just took it off him and just realized there are purple stains from the bloody shirt every where! I have been able to get most of it off but some is sticking in between his joints ):
      1) has anyone else had this problem
      2) what are things other than Mr.Clean Magic eraser that isn't harmful I can use on him.
      Thank you
      Mistress~

    38. That shirt is well known to stain horrifically if it so much as bumps a doll. Mine is quarantined in a ziplock bag. I just used a Magic Eraser, if that isn't working you could try wetting the magic eraser with Winsor & Newton brush cleaner.

Probably a better place for this question is over in the Dollzone mini discussion thread, lots of us Mo owners hang out in there and can help.

    39. cool thank you I will for sure go!
I am debating burning it out of rage right now D:
well I am about to go to the store and buy a new magic eraser because mine is kind of shitty right now and is most likely the reason it is not working as well.
Also I hear that you can use nail polish remover on dolls to get rid of stains, is this true? it just seems harmful and I have re framed from using it.

    40. I haven't washed the fabric that I used to make Paige some clothes, and the dye rubs off onto the resin. Its temporary, and a magic eraser works great! I wouldn't recommend nail polish remover- it can discolor the resin.

    41. At least Resin comes clean. Vinyl...you can wind up with stained for life.

Today I got a lace unitard from BeachGirl and I finally feel safe about getting my Dollfie Dream some nice darkly cute outfits. She can explore her "inner perkigoth" now. It's got arms, unlike the Volks body stocking.

    42. Stay away from acetone. There are other cleaners available. Acetone has been known to 'melt' and soften resin if used incorrectly.

    43. so if I just washed it in the washing machine it should be fine? I am afriad to put it back on him right now ):
aw well it probably wouldn't do much to him , he already has discolored areas from where an inexperienced faceup user used acetone on him. (that I did not not she was using)

    44. Washing will help, because it will wash away some of the dye. I would recommend hand-washing it in cold water with a little woolite. It might be too delicate for the washing machine.

    45. okay thanks
      what is a woolite?

    46. woolite is specifically for delicates and hand washing, but I'm sure if you used a tiny bit of liquid detergent you'd be fine.

    47. Woolite is standard hand-washing or delicate-washing detergent. Honestly I just use soap or regular detergent or shampoo or whatever's within reach when hand-washing doll clothes, and make sure to rinse very well. A soak in cold water with some vinegar in it might help as well, but most of us have given up on that shirt as a lost cause.

    48. yeah I am sewing new pants and a shirt for him now and just put the shirt in a baggy and put burn on it so I guess i will never use or see it again.
thanks for the all the help
also I could not help but notice that you are in NC and you say you live near Charlotte- I am getting on a plane to visit family in Sanford , and Fuquay varina tomorrow. It is cool seeing someone in North Carolina who is into dolls. :) a little off topic my mistake.

    49. My DZ boy's fullset pants also stained his body. The lycra/spandex material they use is notorious for this.

Magic Eraser works wonders, and a lot of patience. I used rubbing alcholhol to get into his joints where I couldn't get the eraser.

Then I soaked the pants in a mixture of equal parts vinegar and cold water. This will get rid of excess dye and set the color in the material. I did it twice, just to be sure, because I was paranoid. If the water is rinsing clear when you rinse out the material, you should be good.

When I bought him jeans, even after two vinegar rinses were still showing blue, so I soaked them for a few hours in cold water and diluted fabric softener. Then rinsed them out *really* well and now I keep him in those jeans all the time and only end up with very faint blueing on his knee joints, after weeks and weeks of being in the jeans.

    50. The Floy outfit set did quite a staining number to one of my dolls (and it had to e the obitsu it did that to and not on the resin doll it was on before -.-). It appears to have stopped doing so after a wash thankfully, all I can eally advise.

    51. Awesome advice from everyone. I'm so used to doll clothes staining I go through mr clean erasers left and right.
Because it pertains I'm adding in to especially be leery of satins in your doll clothes... had a set from Luts that the pants must be an acetate satin or something because there is micro pitting in one of my dolls sealant down his legs from where he'd been sittng on it becuase he stayed in the outfit for several months. It's the first time I'd ever seen something like that happen but it was something i noticed right away redressing him so I know it hadn't been there before... but at least it just hit that surface and isn't IN the resin.

    52. Any dark outfit will start to stain resin, try giving it a wash to wash out the excess dye. The clothes that came with my fullset Hong are constantly turning him black, but it's not so bad now that I soaked them for a bit. As for other products to clean your doll, I have no idea.

    53. My Dollzone mo-3 shirt that I got with my full set stained my doll's arms, middle and neck.I had to use the magic easer and after 15 washes it stills stains him. I gave up putting it on him. I won't buy a dollzone outfit again. I'm not happy with what I went through with Hunter. I emailed both them and the company FeatherFall about the problems and I got ignored. The dolls are great but their outfits suck.

    54. Today I bleached a pair of my BJD's older jeans. They soaked for over an hour, turned out nice and I'm happier with the color now, but I'm just being cautious...I ran the jeans thoroughly through the washer + dryer, and they still smell slightly like bleach. Barely, you can only JUST tell. I'm worried what will happen if my doll wears these jeans? I want to be sure nothing bad will happen before he wears them :(

    55. You really should get a bleach stabilizer solution, or neutralizer, (find out about them via your search engine of choice) and use it on the clothes just to make sure. This is recommended with any clothing for people that has been bleached, so if you want your bases covered, best to do it for dolly clothes too.

    56. Julian was stained by a black shirt he was wearing. So I took it off of him, cleaned him with a Magic Eraser, and his shirt is currently soaking in 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water.

    57. A few cents from someone who just did a heck of a lot of hand-dyeing and associated research for a costume XD

      - Hot water gets rid of excess dye better than cold water. You run the risk of shrinkage, but you're also more likely to get rid of all the unreacted dye.

      - The vinegar-removes-excess-dye theorum only really works on fabrics that have been dyed with acid dyes. Fiber-reactive dyes (RIT and the like) are fixed with heat (or if you feel like doing some home chemistry, you can google "Retayne"). Any dye that's bleeding out is dye that has not reacted, which means your best bet is soaking the affected dye in hot water and a detergent such as Woolite or Synthrapol.

      - On the subject of Synthrapol? It is amazing. It's designed specifically to remove unreacted dyes from fabrics without fading them. I've washed stuff out until the water ran clear, and upon adding Synthrapol it was like "WHOOSH you only thought you got it all out". They have it at Dick Blick/Pearl Paint if you have one of those near you, and if you've got a quilting or knitting store in your area they might also carry it.

    58. I just made a jeans for my doll...and eeh? a light blue stain on resin?...

I just wonder...is resin so sensitif? or is it the fabric?...it's strange that I'm not sure the fabric is kind of one that is easy to leave stain...

I read in other thread that a fabric from Jo-Ann gave stain, too...when reading that, I just thought, perhaps it's an extreme case...

    59. Usually washing the fabric should sort that.

But, I've got some black jeans that no matter how many times I wash them, they still get blue dye on Zeke! I'm constantly magic sponging his legs :S

I haven't heard of resin being sensitive to dye...I wonder if there's truth to that :O
