    2. These are very striking but I’d highly recommend investing in some smaller brushes, this one sold by Volks is quite good but you can also go to your local comic book shop and get some of the brushes made for painting table top game miniatures.

    4. Plus a tip for practicing strokes - I used to watch some of the people at doll meets perfecting brush strokes by using thick watercolor (tube watercolor, not pan or tray paints) on the inside of the headcap! That way they could focus on just making the shorter/finer/quick strokes without regard to what the strokes would be, and could see any progress until the headcap was full and any progress visible before washing it clean and reusing until ready to use the face. Watercolor-pencils are also good for practicing. Unlike regular color pencils, watercolor pencils clean right off with a light wipe with water.

    5. Even if you want a heavy makeup look, it's still better to work with thinned/watered down paints and build it up in layers as you coat. When you do this heavy and opaque paint all in one go, you loose a lot of the details in the eye and mouth shape. If you bought a head because you love the sculpt, you don't want to cover up all the things that distinguish it from another doll.

So do one layer of color and blend as needed, then coat, then another layer of color and blend, coat and repeat this until you are satisfied. I'd recommend watching some youtube videos of face-up artists working on dolls to get a better idea of what the process looks like.

I also recommend water color pencils for the lashes, eyebrows and lip details.
