Hi everyone, I just wondered if anyone had any advice for a newbie regarding posing. I have 2 Elfdoll Rainy (60cm) girls at home already with another on the way, also a DZ MSD size and a Luts Honey Delf to join them soon and until I recently upgraded my camera equipment I couldn't take any pics so I haven't posed them that much and I'm finding it a little daunting - they're so big and weigh quiet a bit (don't tell them I said that lol ). I find my Eun-A a little easier to pose (she's on a pinup body) whereas my Hazy is very stubborn and almost always refuses to stand (she's on a rainy body). I think I'm very tentative about posing them as I don't want to break them - just how much articulation do these dolls (BJD's in general) have? And how much pushing/pulling/tweaking can they take? Also any do's and don'ts of posing you can think of to help a newbie get some great pics?
Grab a fashion magazine and the UK has the best fashion mags EVAH! And pick an image - either from a spread or an advert and try to replicate it with your doll!
BJDs can do some very amazing posing. Youd' be surprised at what you can get your dolls to do, either alone or with the help of wiring, sueding, fishing line or dollstands. thanks for all the ideas so far - I'm still nervous about busting them ... just to clarify something, is it okay if a joint pops out while posing/positioning - thats not damaging to the doll is it? (my Eun-A's knee did that yesterday and scared the heck out of me but it went back in and she seems fine about the whole ordeal). The resin seems pretty tough but are there any things that would damage it? (I mean from a handling point of view - obviously dropping is a no-no lol). Also I've seen dolls in pics posing on one leg seemingly without a stand - can they actually do that or is it a supported pose with the support edited out of the pic? And what about the standing off centre poses (I can only get my Eun-A to stand straight upright) - is that a case of balancing the doll or is there some knack to getting that kind of pose?
I "pop" my dolls joints sometimes when I pose them. I have a doll that's not double jointed, so to get certain poses I have to pop her joints and then I crop the photo. XD My only suggestion would be not to put too much pressure on the sides of the joints, the balls are sturdy, but the "walls" the ball rests in may suffer plastic fatigue.
They're not really that delicate. Just watch out for thin spots, but generally you're very unlikely to damage them by posing them. And yes, some of them can stand on one foot unassisted. All but two or three of mine can, I think. It took sueding and wiring for some of them while others can do it as-is; even my Resinsoul girl can stand on one foot now that she's re-strung and wired. Off-center poses depend a lot on the sculpt, some can do that better than others. There's no harm in hiding or 'shopping out supports, either, if needed!
thanks Synesthesia and AmyAngel, I definately feel better about prodding, poking, pulling and pushing them into position now ... although I don't think they're going to be too thrilled about it
lol as soon as I read this I told my girlfriend and we both instantly tried to pose our dolls on one foot to see if they could do it too. XD
A good thing for posing is testing it with your own body! Just remember to make it look natural, do not over-extend the limbs and it should look great! Nothing really wow-ing, here, but I hope it helped!
I think about how I've seen people do the pose I'm about to put my doll into. Is her hand going to usually be like that, or is it kind of awkward? Even a pose that's humanly possible might not fit what you want to do, and can distort the message portrayed in the photo. It might be good to do a little googling on body language, and look for what certain poses mean. Even something as small as hand positioning can alter what you're trying to convey. Palms up or palms down mean different things.
This is helpful thread but I'd like to know more about wiring. I tried to find more about it but can't find much and like what kind of gauge to use. Is there a tutorial some were for it?
I have average flexibility, and if I can't do it, my doll isn't going to look good doing it either Unless your doll's character has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, they're going to look very awkward doing inhuman poses such as turning their head right back over their shoulders or twisting their wrists right round. In fact, more than awkward- plain painful! I've seen so many pictures taken by otherwise good photographers where the foot is twisted more than humanly possible or the wrist is twisted impossibly in relation to the elbow, etc. It never ceases to bug me and I literally can't see anything else in the picture beside that messed-up joint! So I think as long as you check whether or not their pose is humanly replicable, you'll be alright ^^ ETA: AbbyTheZombie, there's a link in the sticky in the Customizing and Maintenance section. Voila. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?42710-BJD-Owner-seeking-advice-on-how-to-wire
I definitely wouldn't be worried about breaking them. People have dropped dolls and gotten away with it. Just make sure your dolls don't have any particularly thin parts. If you're standing them on the edge of a desk/rock/cliff etc, put a pillow or two down if you're worried about them falling. You certainly will not break them just posing them. I suggest wire for extra stability. By the sounds of it, you have two very, very nice dolls who are normally pretty good posers. As for humanistic poses, definitely use references and google stuff for ideas!
