Poseable wings

Nov 9, 2022

    1. I'm designing a dragon bjd and am at a loss for what to do with the fings. I want them to be poseable and also printed out of resin. Do any of you have any recommendations or references? thank you! [IMG]

    2. (hullo! i must say, this is my first post on this website so i hope i'm doing this right  pls excuse my etiquette!)

so, after a little research into preexisting dragon figures or toys, here is my proposal:

with the connection to the body being (i assume) a ball joint, you could fold the wings back against the body and stretch them out.
the idea of using magnets comes from Fairyland's FeePle65 demon wings, pictured below. they're a little hard to see, but the magnet joint is at the top of the wings.

hope this helps! good luck! also, very cute design, i love their paws.

    3. I would say that weight is going to be your biggest enemy to get the wings to preform.
I don't have enough experience with resin printers to have any specific advice on how to keep weight down, but generally keeping material thickness to it's absoulte minumum is probably a good idea. If you were casting you would probably need to make the pieces with a certain thickness for the resin to fill the mold properly, but that shouldn't be a problem with a print.
Keeping the over all size of the doll down may also be a thing to consider, if you haven't decided on size yet.

The other thing you can do to minimize the risk of wings sagging is to make sure the joint surfaces have enough friction. The easiest and most reliable way to do this is by increasing the size of the contact surface of the joint itself as much as possible. Especcially the joint connecting the wing to the body. This joint can probably be made fairly large and deeply set in the body without messing up the lines of the doll too much. Also make sure the fit of the joint is really good. If it was me I would go with a balanced spherical joint for this so that it has the same tension and friction regardless of pose.

    4. I guess you could have a look at other existing dragon BJDs that have posable wings for reference, like Dream Valley's Bor.

However, I have a Bor and the wings can't really hold a pose as they are rather heavy...

    5. I was thinking of ball and socket joints but I don't know if resin is a good material for that. Maybe thread it like you would an arm or leg?
