Equipment Polaroid cameras for doll pictures?

Jan 26, 2018

    1. So last month I got a fuji film camera and usually polaroids are of literal no interest for me since, while I appreciate the art form of it I tend to take a LOT of the same exact pose from different angles and then finally select a picture to keep and actually share.

I've been using the same digital camera I've had since I was 9 years old. It still works fine just as good as ever.

I'm debating returning it however because film isn't exactly cheap and I really don't want to waste dozens of pictures.

Does anyone use polaroids for doll photography? Would it be worth holding onto the camera and try it versus my digital camera? (Because the other thing I was thinking of doing was getting a new digital camera with the store credit instead of using it to buy something random)

      Thoughts?

    2. I have an HP Sprocket. I use mine for mood boards in my planner for projects. Occasionally I print off Pinterest photos that are inspirational to that particular doll's style. Every doll also has a lil portrait with all the stats/measurements listed next to it and any notes about what fits, what doesn't, etc... The sticker thing is handy. While the paper is expensive, sometimes I just don't want to waste a sheet of regular printing, then have to find scissors, glue, etc... Mind you, my camera is also my phone so.... may not work for you.

    3. I use my instax camera for photos of dolls... yes it is harder, but for me that’s part of the fun and the retro appeal (I’m old enough to remember the original Polaroid’s that weren’t just a novelty). That said, I’m interested in retro photography - I even managed to get a doll photo from a pinhole camera.

If you like the effect of the camera then by all means have a play with it. If you want perfect pristine hi-res images... get your money back for a dslr!

    4. I have a Fuji Instax Mini 8 that I sometimes I use for doll pics and it gives a nice effect!

That said, for 1€/picture it is a darn pricey adventure and certainly not suitable if you want high quality pics.
Id certainly not trade in my DSLR for it but it us fun on the side.

    5. If you're only taking photos for yourself a film type camera is fine, but if want to edit, use special effects, and especially share the photos you need to keep using your dslr. Film is not only expensive, but at some point the company could decide to stop making it. Best to return it and save that money for either a new camera down the road, or stuff like lights and cool backdrops for photos. I would never use anything but my DSLR, even though my family keeps pushing me to use my phone for photos.

    6. Yeah I'm gonna take it back, I did some more thinking and honestly the money sink is too much for something like that. So I'm gonna get myself a different camera with the store credit and hopefully they have the camera I want. My cousin who got it for me meant well, I just felt bad that I can't use it. Retro photography is awesome but it's not a form of photography that I want to give it a shot. I need clean clear pristine photo's

The place she got it at has some nice digital camera's so I'll just do a fast exchange. (She got it at kohl's. DSLR's are currently way out of my budget right now so I'll be exchanging it for one of these: ACTIVEON CX Action Camera )

    7. I have an Instax camera. I tried using it for doll photos, and they came out terribly. I have no idea why, but even though they were perfectly aligned in the viewfinder Zea was barely in the frame. I plan on trying it again eventually, but I'm nervous. The cheapest price I've found for the film is like 50 cents a photo! Buying it in a local store is nearly a dollar per! I also have several polaroid cameras I thrifted but I have only bought polaroid film once as it is prohibitively expensive. Back when I first got the polaroids it was $3 a shot through impossible project! It's less now but still too much. I like digital cuz I can take as many as I want for free.

    8. Oh. My. God!!! :love These are so gorgeous! I never even entertained the idea of using my Instax Mini for dolls too!
You just gave me a wonderful idea - thanks for sharing your pictures and to the OP for creating this thread!!

      :abow:

    9. i never even considered this for an idea and now I might have too. I have a Polaroid camera with heaps of film for it so I will be trying. Thanks for the inspiration.

    10. I would LOVE to get a polaroid for doll photography as well as nature and cosplay

    11. I'd love to bring this thread back to life by mentioning Fujifilm Instax SHARE SP series! This is a mini printer that uses film for your Instax and prints out whatever you send to it through your phone! I took some pictures of a Nendoroid and they came out beautifully. I'd say if you want to take cute polaroid photos of your BJD, I would totally look into investing one of these. I got mine around Black Friday and I love it to bits.

    12. i have used my fujifilm instax mini neo 60 to do some double exposures with dolls + flowers. i adore the pictures and process of using the instant camera. and to save money for film, i typically only use it for special occasions or on trips. it is definitely not a replacement for digital or non instant film.

admittedly it takes a few tries (around 2 film packs in my case) to start getting consistently good pictures. it’s a different style of photography that requires some patience, practice, and research to figure out. but if you are willing to invest the $$ for a few wasted film packs, plus the time and effort to figure it out, it’s super fun and worth it in the end!

    13. What a neat idea to use a Polaroid! I have one laying around and never used it... and never got the idea to photograph my dolls with it... Maybe I will try it in the future when my couple is fully customized ...and have clothes xD

    14. I have an instax that I use for taking pics of people I love and then placing a magnet behind it and putting at my fridge’s door. Naturally I took some pics of my doll with it but it’s not that good like the pics I take with my DSLR or my phone. But it’s a cute and cool knick knack to have, specially for photography lovers.

    15. I need to uplode the instax pics I took of my dolls. Some friends of mine had a instax meet and shoot and I brought my dolls. Its more fun for me to take pics of people on the intax/polarid and I also use it when I travel a lot, but I like the fun and the ability of having my instax for all reasons. Dolls and people alike!
