Equipment Point-and-Shoot camera suggestions

Apr 3, 2019

    1. Hello!

I've searched for this kind of topic but I found out that they are really old (2009-2013).
I had an dslr camera before but I find out that I really want a compact camera. I'm not a professional photographer by all means and unfortunately I don't have the patience to always set up, with the right lens for what I want to do so I've been thinking about getting a point-and-shoot one, the thing is, I have no idea what should I look for in one. My main objective is obviously taking good macro shots of my dolls and sometimes landscapes/portraits (for traveling).
What are your suggestions? Do you think point-and-shoot are bad cameras in 2019?

      Any help is appreciated!

    2. Point-and-shoot are kinda obsolete as far as I can tell, because you can get as good (if not better!) photos with a good smartphone camera. Which is great if you have a high-end smartphone, but stinks if (like me) you have a cheaper one with a lower quality camera. You can still buy basic digital cameras, looking for high MP obviously and maybe one that is sharing-enabled so you can upload photos straight from the camera, but they're a bit overpriced for what you get in my opinion. It's probably better to save that money for one of the smartphone with great cameras because you get so much more functionality for the money. That might just be me, though!
Another option might be to look up gently used digital cameras on eBay or other marketplaces because they sell for cheap secondhand.

    3. Unfortunately my phone isn't that great and I don't plan on upgrading it anytime soon. So it seems like I should just get another dslr since that's what seems to be the best in terms of worth of my money? I mean, if there's a lens that's capable of doing both macro/landscape decently enough, I can stick with it even though it's not that portable D:

    4. Why do you think you need macro???

I use a wide range zoom on my DSLR for nearly 100% of my doll photos.
It's a Nikon 28-300mm zoom for a full frame body but I also have an 18-200mm
zoom for my APS-C sensor body and it gives comparable results. Here's a
tight photo of one of my 1/4 size girls, a JID girl Isar. That's as close I need to
get and I had no need of any sort of macro capability. These are amazingly
versatile travel lenses. Drop me a private note and I'll share links to my more
      general photography.

    5. Have you considered a compact DSLR?

Anything over 6 MP is capable of beautiful photos (has been since 2005 era...) so "high MP" is not something necessary to consider, in my opinion. I believe this even moreso considering what is "standard" MP these days.

    6. I hear you. I've gone the whole SLR/DSLR route and what I decided I needed for photostories was a point and shoot. What I really use for everything now is my Panasonic DMC LX7. Point and shoot with manual option. Built in zoom, macro and flash. If I want, I can take super clear photos, but mostly what I want is to keep up with Wiishu's dialogue, which means setting up fast and shooting fast. It fits easily in my purse, along with Wiishu and Pooki. Great for field trip photoshoots. I've never utilized everything it has to offer.

Not nearly as impressive as @TomB (gorgeous pic, fella) but not too bad. Using available light (the candles) and untouched. Handheld...can't remember if I used the programmable feature or manual...long time ago, but flash was off. 100ASA. I don't think I have it set for highest quality, since I always take them down for the stories. I also tend to use the zoom rather than go in physically close...often I'll use the flash for indoor, then zoom in to soften the flash effect. I THINK that you could come close to the clarity of TomB's, but couldn't swear to it as I've never tried with this camera. All depends on what you want.

Y'know...I'll set up with lights tomorrow and see what it will do with a deliberate closeup. I'm curious myself now.
