resin pics on page 6 - at last, we have achieved moldness!!! ****************************************************************** ok, so I really have been kind of good this week, and have started doing some sanding and such on Bug. and I really, really do want to finish her off and get her casting in resin, really I do! but so many images, so little time! and it takes a much better person than i am to sit and sand when you could be squishing clay... so please meet Astarte - the pocket venus. (I read that phrase in a book from the 1920's and always loved the image....) one pic is with Bug to show you her approximate size (with high heel feet she measures just over 8" tall) yes, she will get arms and hands, and her shoes will be redone. and her legs will be sanded down as much as possible to give her big hips and tiny dainty ankles. have to try to find some roughly doll house sized eyes though.... i made her some little balls of cernit for the interim.
Wow, Pat she IS tiny, you just get no sense of the scale till she is compared to Bug!! I kinda like her with no arms too, especially as a Goddess statuette... not sure I'd want anything with heels that spiky in my pocket, though
Patl, you're certainly on a roll! What will you come up with next, my curiosity is surely peaked with this one... for sure you have a greatly whimsical imagination!
(i like her with no arms too.... ) dancing goddess : and to give an even better idea of size = the eye is an 8mm one and here is Superwoman!!! (can't you just see the cloak floating in the wind behind her?)
A Wonderful and defiantly different figure; expressive! A remarkable accomplishment a that size, too... goodness. She and Bug make such an intriguing pair... somehow I'm reminded of that cyborg maker's studio in 'Blade Runner,' if dwindling memory serves. More! Onward! (And you do make me itch to try one, too!) Forest http://www.forestrogers.com
ooh wow she is HOT! at first whne i read the title, i was thinking, hmmm 'pocket venus' sounds like a sex toy... then i saw her- she LOOKS like a sex toy (in a god way) shes gorgeous!
<snork!!!> thanks Chuuie - I know she thinks she is pretty sexy --- so glad that you saw it too! WOO HOOO! Forest, come on jump in, the waters fine! I'll trade you 10 semi-finished grey bjds of varying wierdness for one bjd harpie from you!!! (hmmm - i probably HAVE 10 semi-finished bjds of varying wierdness..... such a coincidence!) thanks guys --- don't like those shoes on her (love the spike 12" heels, but the front part isn't right) so am looking at those strange tall getas and chopines (???? from Venice?) but may just go back to some sort of spiked high heel.... just have to figure out how to make the loop at the top of the foot strong enough......)
just for fun --- redid her feet, and gave her a mohawk headcap. she is a lot of fun to pose - but in redoing her butt, i think i changed her center of gravity, so she won't do the single footed poses right now. will have to work on that.
I absolutely love the feet, both sets! :3 But I am curious to know-- are you going to make regular feet for her, or only super fun super chunky feet?
Love her .. specially that lovely rounded bum!! edit: I just realised that sounds a bit "pervy"!!! I'm not "pervy" .. honest I'm not!!!
<grin> - hey Kaye, you can't be a perve for noticing that cause then i'd be a perve for intentionally sculpting it, right? besides, she just so obviously is happy with herself, I love it. (being of that type of body set myself - vertically challenged and horizontally spreading ------ but too shy to enjoy myself like she is, she is based on a couple folk i've met who were so very comfortable with their non-dollfie body types) hey Bruny! oh yeah! hmmmm --- now i need to figure out how to give a tiny that sized perfect finger and toe nails.... hey Keanna, I'm working on arms and hands now, but i'll try some feet next. her proportions are not going to be good for most clothes though.... but i would love to see her in a little hiphugger goth pleated skirt with suspenders and a short t (hmmm, hey Tro-chan!!! can i bribe you to make her an outfit????) thanks DenaliWind - she has been fun - though her joints are a struggle. couple pics with "normal" hair...
Patl, I was just kidding about the Lee's press ons, but it would be interesting... LOL!! You know you have done 2 bjds in 2 weeks... you're my hero!! I'm also loving that mohawk, but the regular wigs look fine on her too. May I ask, what color resin you'll be using 'cause I can so picture her in a nice dark tan resin and giant hoops on her ears.
wow I just stumbled on this thread ans ...... WOW..... I love this little girl she is so perfect the way she looks I can't wait to see her cast in resin. will she be one of a kind or will there be more of her??
oooh i love the new feet! i liked the other feet too >.< you sohould make various "shoe feet" and save them al so you can swap them out >.< it would rock. especially if/when you cast her and sell her (hint hint) different shoe feet would be a great accessory! right now most doll artist have just a complete doll, but you could have a doll AND add-ons, sort of like the puki dolls and their "magical parts"
Darkmothflame has kindly volunteered to help me try some molding and casting.... and Twigling had kindly offered advice on joint issues and casting --- so I'm planning on taking them both up on their offers and see if I can cast both pv(the pocket venus) and bug in resin. i'm keeping my fingers crossed and will post pics as we make progress. and we'll see how it goes from there. I definitely plan on casting her with assorted feet <grin> and in different resin colors.... hopefully by early summer. will be an interesting spring!
What a fun character! You have such a great imagination! Looks like this will be an interesting spring for both of us. I'm terrified of the molding and casting process!
She is WILD! I love her, Pat. You just make the most memorable, quirky characters. Bug looks darling too. But man- she is just off the frakin hook
Wow Pat! Just Wow. Not sure how I missed this one. I guess I've been too busy learning to sculpt. She is Fab. Such a goddess. I'll have to hit you up for tips on joints, because she poses so well. I can't wait to see her and Bug cast.
awesome hamsters!!! darkmothflame and i are working on her molds (more are being poured as i type - i hope!) and the eyes are due in later this week.... hopefully there should be some pics then. need to figure out how to color the resin next....
ok - finally got some eyes that sort of work for her... these are 6mm on wire eyes from etsy... 5mm might have been better - but these aren't bad. we are having horrible troubles trying to get molds and casts without bubbles ---- and while setting up molds seems to be logical to Darkmothflame, I keep doing stupid things like setting up a mold so the seamline is horizontal across the breasts. (don't ask. I don't know what in the world i was thinking!!!) but while i'm waiting to pour an improved head and a new torso, i worked on arms, hands and regular feet and took some pics... she is very spiritual --- but like me, has a little trouble with the full lotus position... loves Disco!
She's truly adorable. I can't but help smiling while watching her pose (she's a great poser by the way - very impressive). She seems so joyful and fun to be around. Her body is very cute, but I looking at her I get the feeling that the bodyline seems a bit out of sync because of the highly detailed upper torso and hip put together with the simpler shaped "belly ball" . Not sure if it's a good or bad thing though... it does work very well when posing I must admit, so maybe I'm just reacting to a kind of jointing I just haven't seen before
She's looking great! The poseability is really nice... I like her normal feet too. She has a great face! And how exciting to see her with eyes in...
hmmmmm.... hey Zidora, I'll play with trying an optional - more standard shaped torso piece out of curiousity. she really started out very conceptual - no arms, round ball jointing like the extreme artist dolls that these started from.... etc. and slowly has gone more realistic. but her upper torso will be sanded more smooth to fit with the rest of the pieces too... thanks for comments guys - Darkmothflame and i are aware we seem to have problems sculpting things that fit the criteria and are hoping to learn enough to be able to continue to make our quirkier ones, but also ones that appeal to folk too... hey! anyone have any ideas on pressure pots? I searched the subforum and didn't find too much info. would love to hear about anything anyone has learned....
She's fabulous... I do hope you can figure out how to get good casts of her. Are you getting substantial bubbles in specific places, or tiny "pinhole" bubbles at random? The former is usually due to lack of "vents" in the mold, while the little ones are supposedly due to moisture contamination. I've heard that you can dust your molds with talcum powder to reduce them on the surface. I've also bought (but not yet tried) this stuff called "Watertrap," which is supposed to let you cast resin from alginate. As I understand it, alginate is pretty much made out of water, so I'm hoping this stuff can more than handle random moisture contamination. You can buy it here. What brand resin are you using, by the way? I had a poll going for a while, trying to figure out if bubbles were more common in a specific brand...
She 's just delicious Her size and curves.. just LOVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing work
She's really coming along, Patl!! I love how the face is turning out A very interesting knee joint you've got happening there too. Will reply to your email later!!
Hi PatL, You can't get bubble free casting without a pressure pot. You need one that goes to 80psi .. you only need to go to 60psi to cast resin but 70psi is better for making the molds so I just leave mine set at 70psi. Hope this works .. this is the one I have http://www.vektools.com.au/workquip-pressure-manual-p-3577.html I run mine off a 2hp compressor. I was lucky when I bought mine because the guy at the store used one to cast miniatures so he set mine up just right. hope this helps Kaye
Hi Patl, I've seen you around on other lists. Love the Pocket Venus! I think her geometric belly will look just fine once she's costumed. I wanted to share a link for tiny glass eyes: http://jane.walkerillustration.com/minieyes.htm I haven't used this vendor myself, so no endorsement from me, but she's been around for a long time so she must be doing something right. Tea Rose
That's so cool! I was worried if I got this girl I'd have trouble getting eyes for her. Edit: Crud there all out of stock P.S. How 'bout some close-ups of the face
hey guys - thanks for the enthusiasm!!! I'm still hoping to cast her myself - but if it doesn't look like it will work, i'll be contacting Dennis to see how much she would cost if cast by Bobobie... I really like their service, but was hoping to keep her price down if possible... i've got a refined face in the molding process so will do closeups asap i have a cleaned up cast from that --- i opened up the back of her head more, it is so tiny that it is really difficult to fit your fingers in to tie off her stringing threads --- so i opened her head more, and will work on the base for the head s hook... thanks Tea Rose! I believe that the eyes I get from the etsy shop might actually come from her.... they look identical. I'll get closeups asap i can to show how they look in place... I've ordered from Jane a couple of years ago - and they always seem to be out of stock ---- but you can look at the etsy place : http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5523137 now i need to focus on sanding down her toes and fingers and refining.... and hubbie dearest has ok'd expenditure for a pressure pot - but i have to find a place for it... Kaye --- thank you so much for the information! our compressor doesn't seem to have an hp rating on it, but it says it goes up to 135 psi so that is hopeful... boy is it noisy! we are ordering more mold supplies, resin and some colorants, and we'll see what happens.... going to see if we can figure out some resin colors, may end up with some strange bits and pieces until we figure out a way to be consistant... thanks again all hope to talk to you soon patl
whoops - here is the direct link to the etsy eyes for the dolls... http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5523137§ion_id=5281643
the shoes are fantastic and the little mohawk looks cute on her haha! can't wait to see what you do next
I'm in awe, Pat -- sculpting and casting, too! i don't know if I can work up the nerve to try casting...
wow.. I'm just floored. She's fantastic - so perfect and so curvy and yet so very very small! How do you do it?
there are plusses and minuses to making them tiny. because they are so light and all the limbs are tiny - I think that balance is easier. but to keep feet in proportion - you end up with tiny bases to stand them on.... and i have kind of short blunt fingers and find it hard to work this tiny. but at the same time- if a part doesn't work, it is much less stressing to toss it and make another one than it is for one 2 or 3 times her size. i've always wanted to do one that would fit in a doll house, and that didn't quite happen my son is helping us now with the molding - he is being very precise and careful (2 things i'm not really good at) --- so hopefully, if we have some dry weather, maybe we'll have some better casts by the end of the weekend. fingers are crossed....
She is wonderful! Congrats on making a leap to get the pressure pot! I think I need a little person in my pocket when you get ready to do orders :0
hey all, slowly trudging forward here! thank you again for kind words. sometimes i think if i have to look at another piece of sandpaper my fingers will fall off --- so kind words help keep me trying. taking a break from trying to sand her smooth and talked Darkmothflame into doing a faceup on one of the casts of her head. (it has a tiny airbubble in its lip - but Darkmothflame still gave it a wonderful faceup...) she also donated an awesome wig for the photos... please forgive the legs and feet. they are from some of my less successful molds. had to use them because her good ones are in the process of having new molds made... I also borrowed Darkmothflame's Twig (orient doll vampire Ji) to show her size. I think they look great together....
wow when she was in the darker clay i couldnt appreciate just how cute her nose was! i LOVE her face! shes so lovely
She is adorable, especially her face! The body is all kinds of awesome in its own right... especially the feet/heels! Those look really crazy-good!
